Element Assignment

Each student will research and present on an individual element. Presentations are due January 17th and can be in various formats like a word document, PowerPoint, or poster. Students must cite reliable sources like PubChem, Sigma Aldrich, or IUPAC and cannot use Wikipedia. The presentation must include the element's name, symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, and number of protons, neutrons, and electrons as well as a picture of its uses. Additional optional details include the element's location on the periodic table, properties, and date/person of discovery. Students will also create an element tile with this core information and colored according to its category on the periodic table.

Element Assignment

Each student will be responsible for researching one element and reporting on it.
Everyone will be responsible for a DIFFERENT element and must hand in their own
project - you will be working INDIVIDUALLY.

Presentation: You may present the information in any way you like. Some ideas
include: a word document, a handwritten document, a PowerPoint, a video, a poster,
a brochure, or a picture. Other ideas are also welcome. If you aren’t sure, just ask!

Due Date: This will be due Monday, January 17th by 3:00 pm.

Resources: Include the URL or name and authors of any books that you use to
find your information. Include this information at the end of your document or
PowerPoint or on a separate document if you are presenting your information in a
different way.

Use reliable resources. You are NOT allowed to use Wikipedia as a resource.
Some great resources for this project are:
● PubChem
● Sigma Aldrich
● IUPAC
● Royal Society of Chemistry
Part A:
Content:
● Tier A (Mandatory)- Your presentation will NEED to include the following
information:
○ What is an element - in your own words
○ Name of the element
○ Symbol of the element
○ Atomic number of the element
○ Atomic mass of the element
○ Number of protons in the element
○ Number of neutrons in the element
○ Number of electrons in the element
○ Include a picture or visual of what the element is used for

● Tier B - Your report may include the following information:

○ Where the element is on the periodic table
○ What the element is used for
○ Date the element was discovered (year, month, date)
○ Who discovered the element
○ Where was the element discovered
○ 1-2 of the following properties of the element: colour, density, boiling
point, melting point

● Tier C - Your report may include the following information:

○ 3-4 of the following properties of the element: colour, density, boiling
point, melting point
○ What was the element named after (the origin of the element name)
○ Find a different name for the element in another language and note
which language
○ Something interesting you learned about the element
Part B: Mandatory
Create a tile for your element on a regular sheet of paper that includes the
information we have discussed. Use the correct information for YOUR element

● Atomic Number

● Element Name

● Element Symbol

● Atomic Mass

At the bottom of the tile also include:

● Number of protons and how to find this number

● Number of electrons and how to find this number

● Number of neutrons and how to find this number

Make sure your tile is clear and easy to read. Keep in mind the look of a tile on the
periodic table - what information stands out the most? Where on the tile do you find
each piece of information?

Colour the background of your tile according to the following:

● Pink: Hydrogen, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, Sulphur

● Red: Lithium, Sodium, Potassium
● Orange: Beryllium, Magnesium, Calcium
● Blue: Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine
● Green: Helium, Neon, Argon
● Yellow: Boron, Silicon
● Purple: Iron, Nickel, Copper, Zinc, Mercury
● Grey: Aluminum, Tin
