Experiment 2

This document calculates the concentration of acetic acid in the inorganic and organic layers of a sample using a 1:1 reaction between acetic acid and sodium hydroxide. It then calculates the distribution coefficient of acetic acid between the two layers and plots the results on a log-log graph to determine the value of n, which indicates the reaction order. The value of n was found to be 1.3166 instead of the expected 1, suggesting a need for further hypothesis to explain the results.

6. Calculate the concentration of acid in the two layers in moles per liter.

The acetic acid and sodium hydroxide are monoprotic acid and monoprotic base respectively,
this would give a 1: 1 reaction and we assumed 𝑁𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 = 𝑀𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 equivalence.

𝑀𝐻𝐴𝑐𝑉𝐻𝐴𝑐 = 𝑀𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻𝑉𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻

𝑀𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻×𝑉𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 𝑀 𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻×𝐿 𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻

𝑀𝐻𝐴𝑐 = 𝑉𝐻𝐴𝑐
= 𝐿 𝐻𝐴𝑐

The table below shows the average molarity of the acetic acid
Inorganic Layer, Organic Layer,
moles/L moles/L
2.0 N HAc 2.6775 0.12875
1.0 N HAc 0.59 0.07
0.5 N HAc 0.5725 0.0175
0.25 N HAc 0.2825 0.005

7. Calculate the distribution coefficient

𝐾𝐶 = 𝑛
⎡⎢𝐶α⎤⎥
⎣ 𝑖⎦

[𝐻𝐴𝑐 𝑖𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑐]𝑎𝑣𝑒
𝐾𝐶 = [𝐻𝐴𝐶 𝑖𝑛 𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑐]𝑎𝑣𝑒

The table below shows the distribution coefficient of each sample and the average.

8. Prepare a plot of log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝐴 versus log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝐴 and then calculate n of Eq. 23. If the value of n
is not equal to unity, suggest a hypothesis to explain the results.
β α
In the log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝐴 vs log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝐴 plot, the β phase represents the organic layer and the α represents
β α
the inorganic layer. The graph below shows the scatter plot log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝐴 vs log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝐴 .
It was computed that the equation is 𝑦 = 1. 3166𝑥 − 1. 3307, which came from the derivation:

𝐶𝑖
𝐾𝐶 = 𝑛
⎡⎢𝐶α⎤⎥
⎣ 𝑖⎦

β α
log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐾𝐶 = log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝑖 − 𝑛 log 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝐶𝑖
