Module 8 - College Mindset

This document discusses growth mindset and its relationship to academic achievement. It explains that a growth mindset, which is a belief that intelligence can be developed through effort, leads to better motivation, behaviors, and responses to challenges than a fixed mindset, which is a belief that intelligence is static. The document also summarizes research showing mindsets can be changed through interventions, leading students to do better. Finally, it provides tips for developing self-esteem and managing stress, both of which can influence academic performance.

MODULE 8

The College Mindset

Growth Mindset and

Achievement

D ecades of research show a powerful

relationship bet ween mindset and
achievement. Students’ beliefs about intelligence
and learning impact:
•Motivation
•Academic behaviors (e.g., studying and
seeking help)
•Responses to challenges and setbacks
•Academic achievement

Growth Mindset vs.

Fixed Mindset

Fixed mindset
•Intelligence is a fixed trait. You can’t change it.
Growth mindset
•You can grow your intelligence through effort.

• These two beliefs lead students to very different

conclusions about the meaning of events
• And the meaning they make – the narrative they
construct – determines the behaviors in which
they choose to engage

 Consequences of Beliefs

Blackwell, Trzesniewski, & Dweck 2007

Consequences of Mindsets

• Students with a fixed mindset tend to

show declines in their performance over
time, particularly when they transition to
a new environment such as from
elementary to middle school or middle
school to high school.
• Students with a growth mindset typically
show increases over time.

Does Growth Mindset Correlate with

Achievement?
Evidence From A Nationwide Sample In Chile
•Chilean National Achievement Test
•10th grade test incorporated
Growth Mindset Assessment

•n=147,000

The reason these mindsets can have

such an impact on achievement has to do
with the recursive process that takes place
when students experience a challenge or
setback.
Recursive Processes

Mindsets Can Change!

•Rigorous research also
shows that mindsets can
change
•When they are changed to
have a Growth Mindset,
students do better
• that there’s also research
showing that students’ beliefs can be changed,
and that when they are, students do better.
Mindset Interventions

• In this study, 7th grade students were taught

about neuroplasticity - how the brain changes
when you learn new things. They were shown
the evidence that you really can change your
intelligence by challenging yourself and
learning new strategies. Students in the
treatment group who got this message did
significantly better after the intervention than
students in the control group
• change your intelligence by challenging
yourself and learning new strategies
How Do Everyday Interactions Shape
Mindsets?
•The language we use tells others what we believe
and what we value
•Feedback tells us what is expected of us and
what goals we should have

Develop Self-esteem
•Self-esteem is your overall opinion of yourself
— how you view yourself with all of your strengths,
abilities, flaws, weaknesses and limits. When you
have healthy self-esteem, you feel good about
yourself and see yourself as deserving others'
respect.
•When you have low self-esteem, on the other
hand, you put little value on your opinions and
ideas, and you constantly worry that you aren't
"good enough."
Self esteem can impact your success in college, as
well as in life, so here are some tips to gaining
healthy self-esteem:
How can you develop self-esteem?

•Did you know that our thoughts impact our

emotions, which in turn impact how we perceive
ourselves and our situations?
•Try to practice “training” your thoughts.
Consciously choose to say positive things to
yourself such as “This may be hard, but I can do
it,” or “I can achieve great things, look I am already
here in college.”
•STOP! When you notice a negative
thought...CHANGE IT and CHANGE how you feel
about yourself! This will ultimately allow you to
think successfully, feel successful and BE
successful!
More Steps:
• Take time to recognize the accomplishments you
have made, NO MATTER HOW SMALL they may
be.
•  Create a daily accomplishment journal. Write the
things you accomplished today...even if it is just
making it out of bed in the morning and getting to
class. The more accomplishments you recognize
the more they will increase.
• Exercise your body! Helping your internal system
work properly increases your brain function.
Exercise actually releases “endorphins” which are
natural chemicals in your body that make you
think and feel good!
•  Write down a description of yourself the way
your closest friend would describe you. Include all
the qualities they see in you and remind yourself of
them when you start to doubt yourself. We all are
unique in the ways that make us special!
•  Learn something new! Learning something new
happens often in college. Recognize the growth
you are making and be excited about the choices
you are making!
Other factors that may influence your studies...

To overcome the blocks to

learning, start…
Stress Less
•Stress can cause everything from pimples on your
face to a heart attack.
•College is stressful, and so is life; if you learn to
manage your stress during college, you will carry
those skills over into the rest of your life as well.

Stress Less..... Recognize Stress and How

to Manage It
•Believe it or not, some stress in your life is good!
•Appropriate and controllable stress provides
interest and excitement and motivates you to
greater achievements in school and in life.
•Understanding how to decipher between
“positive” and “negative” stress and manage the
“negative stress” is not something that comes
naturally.
•You can learn what stresses impact you and how
to manage them in a healthy manner.
A useful tool in identifying major and
minor stressors in your life is scaling. ..

•Get a piece of paper and list down things/

situations You are currently dealing with.
•Use the scale below to discover what is really
stressing you out.
•Then consider ways to manage it. This way you
know you are taking care of the major stressors in
your life.
•For example, forgetting to charge your phone before
school may be around a 0-1. However, not having
enough money to buy food would be more of a 5.
