Section Score

Direction: Analyze and research the different eras in information systems. Then, answer each of the following items in at least five
(3) sentences. (3 items x 20 points)

1. In your opinion, explain why information systems were centralized and used solely with governance and management
during the First Era.

In the early years of computerized MIS, information systems were centralized and only addressed management and governance
requirements. Most information systems and the reports they produced were under the control of accounting departments. To manage
terabytes of data in databases and support thousands of concurrent users and application programs accessing a variety of resources, they
must use mainframe computers.

2. From your perspective, rationalize why there was a need to make information systems and technology available to the
public during the Second and Fourth Eras.

The third era (client/server), in which computers on a common network access shared information on a server, was brought about
by the need to share information within an enterprise as technological complexity increased and costs decreased. This enables
simultaneous data access for thousands or even millions of users. High speed networks, which were made possible by the fourth
(enterprise) era, connected every part of the business enterprise, and provided rich information access encompassing the entire
management structure.

3. With cloud computing ushering in the Fifth Era, justify the need to access information systems anytime and anywhere
with any device in this era.

The emergence of cloud computing and mobility is having a variety of effects on the economy. A key strategic imperative has been
to give customers access to enterprise systems from any location and on any device, as well as the ability to interact with data to complete
tasks. Cloud computing is crucial because it provides flexibility, data recovery, little to no maintenance, easy access, and a higher level of
security.
