Lesson - Plan - Heat and Work
Lesson - Plan - Heat and Work
Lesson objective(s):
- Define and explain heat, conduction, convection and radiation
- Explain the relationship between the kinetic and potential energy of atoms in a thermodynamic
system.
- Explain the connection between the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics, temperature, thermal
equilibrium, and temperature scales.
- Solve problems involving temperature, thermal expansion, heat capacity, heat transfer, and thermal
equilibrium in contexts such as, but not limited to, the design of bridges and train rails using steel,
and surface temperatures of planets.
ENGAGEMENT
• The teacher will provide a quick heat transfer activity the students will perform. The students will
work in groups and will be ask Thought-provoking questions related to the activity.
1. What keeps the balloon intact even after the heat is applied?
2. Do all objects expand when heated?
3. How does heat make objects mechanical work?
EXPLORATION
• Students will be provided an investigative activity where they will resolve an environmental issue.
The issue is the warming of the planet. The activity will consist of information that presents the
results of climate change that are experienced by the people around the world. The students will
identify how the people in each community is affected. The students will be tasked to track down the
main culprit of such issue. As the students try to look for the culprit, they will answer thermal
equilibrium problems to proceed on each level of tracking down the main reason of the issue. Once
they come up with the culprit, the students will be asked to craft a long-term solution which they will
provide at the end of the lesson after the activity.
• As the students explore through the activity, the teacher with the help of the activity work sheet will
give “Big Ideas” that will guide the students all throughout the activity.
1. Thermal Equilibrium
2. Carbon Emission
3. Solar Radiation
4. Green House Effect
EXPLANATION
• Before presenting the learners with the explanation, the teachers will raise Higher Order thinking
questions that will help the learners connect what they learn during the explorations to the big ideas.
1. How does solar radiation contribute to the increase of earth’s temperature?

5E Lesson Plan for Heat Transfer & Thermal Equilibrium
• The new knowledge learned by the students will be utilized to craft their long-term solution to the
issue that they uncover during the exploration activity.
• The learners will then present their long-term solution to the issue base on their knowledge about
heat transfer and Thermal equilibrium
EVALUATION
• A 20 item Summative Assessment is provided to the learners
• A climate change awareness survey questionnaire will be given as well to measure the learners level
of awareness.
