WHAT IS “SELF AWARENESS”?

• Self awareness- is understanding one owns or individual personality.

Also it is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions,
thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards.
• Self – it often refers to yourself, himself/herself, and oneself.
• Awareness- It is defined as showing realization, participation and
knowledge of ones growth.
SELF AND IT’S ASPECT (BURNARD 1992)
• Physical self- this is the felt sense of the self and includes our physical body. It
covers our perception of our body; the images of our body.
• Spiritual self- this is the aspect involved in the investment of meaning into what we
do as humans. This meaning May be framed In religious terms or it may be found in
philosophy, politics, psychology .
• Darker self – A Part of understanding and growing into the full potential of the self.
• Social self- this is the aspect that openly shared with others in various social
situations such as home, work, with friends and so forth.
• Private- the part of the self that is known mainly to oneself, such as one’s inner
feelings and self-concept. It may be similar to or different from the public self one
reveals to others. See also social identity.
FOUR (4) ASPECT OF SELF( QUADRINITY)

• Physical aspect- is of course, our physical body. It also includes our ability to survive and
thrive in the material world.
• Emotional aspect- is our ability to experience life deeply, to relate to one another and
the world on a feeling level. It's the part of us that seeks meaningful contact and
connection with others.
• Intellectual aspect- is our intellect, our ability to think and reason. The mental level of
our existence consists of our thoughts, attitudes, beliefs and values.
• Spiritual aspect- is our inner essence, our soul, the part of us that exists beyond time
and space. It connects us with the universal source and the oneness of all life.
THE SELF CONCEPT IN PSYCHOLOGY

• Self concept- is how we perceive our behaviors, abilities, and unique characteristics.
Self-concept tends to be more malleable when we're younger and still going through
self-discovery and identity information. According to lewis (1990) he suggest that
development of concept of self has two(2) aspect.
1. Existential self-This is 'the most basic part of the self-scheme or self-concept; the
sense of being separate and distinct from others and the awareness of the
constancy of the self.
2. Categorical self -The realization that you exist as an individual object in the world,
with distinct properties, such as your age, hair color, and gender.
3 DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF SELF
CONCEPT

1.Self image- This does not necessarily have to reflect reality. Indeed a person with
anorexia who is thin may have a self-image in which the person believes they are fat.
A person’s self image is affected by many factors, such as parental influences,
friends, the media etc.

2.Self- esteem- Self-esteem (also known as self-worth) refers to the extent to which
we like, accept or approve of ourselves, or how much we value ourselves. Self-
esteem always involves a degree of evaluation and we may have either a positive or
a negative view of ourselves.
High self-esteem (we have a positive view of ourselves) This tends to lead to
• Confidence in our own abilities
• Self-acceptance
• Not worrying about what others think
• Optimism
Low self-esteem (we have a negative view of ourselves) This tends to lead to
• Lack of confidence
• Want to be/look like someone else
• Always worrying what others might think
• Pessimism
3. Ideal self- If there is a mismatch between
how you see yourself (e.g., your self-image) and
what you’d like to be (e.g., your ideal-self ) then
this is likely to affect how much you value
yourself.
WHY WE DEVELOP SELF AWARENESS?

As we develop self awareness we are able to make changes

in the thoughts and interpretation we make in our mind.
Changing the interpretation in our mind allow us to change
our emotions. Self-awareness is that when we see ourselves
clearly, we are more confident and more creative. We make
sounder decisions, build stronger relationships, and
communicate more effectively.
HOW DO WE DEVELOP SELF AWARENESS?
- Self awareness is developed through practice by focusing our attention on the
details of our behavior and personality. Also in being engaged in what’s going on
around us.
Tips for becoming self aware include:
- Be in touch with your own feelings
- Practice retrieve thinking
- Do not deny your feelings
- Do not allow your feelings dictate your behavior
- Seek feedback from those that you are close and trust
HOW DOES SELF AWARENESS MAKE INDIVIDUAL
MORE EFFECTIVE?
Self awareness helps individual identify gaps between one skill which promotes skills
development. From this, the following can be improved and enhanced:
1. Skills development
2. Knowing strength and weakness
3. Developing intuitive decision
4. Stress management in coping with stress effectively
5. Motivation
6. Leadership
WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS FOR SELF AWARENESS?
Human beings are complex and diverse. To become more self-aware,
we should develop an understanding of ourselves in many areas, for
self-awareness include the following:
1. Personality- an understanding of our personalities can help us find
situations in which we will thrive, and help us avoid situations in
which we will experience too much stress.
2. Values- It's important that we each know and focus on our personal
values. There are times that so many problems and opportunity arise
that our list of things to do can easily exceed the time we have to
do them. When we focus on our values we are more likely to
accomplish what we consider the most important.
3. Habits- Our habits are the behaviors that we repeat routinely and often
automatically. Although we would like to possess the habits that help us interact
effectively with and manage others, we can probably all identify at least one of our
habits that decreases our effectiveness.
4. Needs- needs causes motivation, And when needs aren’t satisfied they can cause
frustration, conflict and stress. One of the advantages of knowing which needs exert
the strongest influence on our own behaviors is the ability to understand how they
affect our interpersonal relationships.
5. Emotions - Emotional self-awareness has become a hot topic of discussion
recently because it's one of the five facets of emotional intelligence. Understanding
your own feelings, what causes them, and how they impact your thoughts and
actions is emotional self-awareness.
HUMANS BEHAVIOR ESSENTIAL FOR OBTAINING SELF-
SUCCESS
• An independent nature
• Self confidence
• Persistence
• A big imagination
• A thick skin
• Clarity of self understanding
• Clarity of intent
• Focus
• Optimism
• Passion
JOHARI WINDOW

The ‘Johari’ window model is a convenient method used to achieve this

task of understanding and enhancing communication between the
members in a group. American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry
Ingham developed this model in 1955. The idea was derived as the
upshot of the group dynamics in University of California and was later
improved by Joseph Luft. The name ‘Johari’ came from joining their first
two names. This model is also denoted as feedback/disclosure model of
self-awareness.

SEVEN (7) DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS

• WHAT IS WELLNESS?
- Wellness is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is not a
passive or static state but rather a dynamic and conscious development
of the whole self. Wellness is associated with intentions, choices, and
actions leading toward an optimal state of well-being so that instead of
surviving, you're thriving. Wellness is commonly viewed as having seven
dimensions: Social, occupational, spiritual, intellectual, Emotional,
environmental , physical.
1. Social wellness-is how we interact with our community and those around us. It
includes healthy relationships, consent, communication skills and support systems. It
is also about building a support system of family, friends, peers, and professionals.
2. Occupational wellness- is the ability to achieve a balance between work and leisure in
a way that promotes health, a sense of personal satisfaction and is (for most people)
financially rewarding.
3. Spiritual wellness- is being connected to something greater than yourself and having
a set of values, principles, morals and beliefs that provide a sense of purpose and
meaning to life, then using those principles to guide your actions.
4. Intellectual wellness -means striving toward good mental health, continued
intellectual growth, and creativity in life. This can include continued learning,
practicing problem solving, improving verbal skills, keeping abreast of social and
political issues, and reading books, magazines, and newspapers.
5. Emotional wellness- is defined as coping effectively with life and
creating satisfying relationships.
6. Environmental wellness -is having good health by occupying
pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being. It
promotes interaction with nature and also creating an enjoyable
personal environment (both in and out of your workspace).
7. Physical wellness- is about doing what you can to help strengthen
and care for your body. Taking steps before, during, and after your
treatment can help you manage the effects of the illness and side
effects of treatment.
IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING OUR SELF AWARENESS

- Knowing our self awareness is important for one critical reason: With
self-knowledge, we give ourselves the possibilities to get maximum
fulfilment and happiness in our lives. If you know who you are, it opens
up possibilities of achieving things that you truly want and deserve,
rather than doing things in life that others want you to do or direct you
to do. Once you know who you are, it becomes easily possible to know
where you are headed, what are clearly your goals, and what is the best
route towards achieving them.
