• Physical aspect- is of course, our physical body. It also includes our ability to survive and
thrive in the material world.
• Emotional aspect- is our ability to experience life deeply, to relate to one another and
the world on a feeling level. It's the part of us that seeks meaningful contact and
connection with others.
• Intellectual aspect- is our intellect, our ability to think and reason. The mental level of
our existence consists of our thoughts, attitudes, beliefs and values.
• Spiritual aspect- is our inner essence, our soul, the part of us that exists beyond time
and space. It connects us with the universal source and the oneness of all life.
THE SELF CONCEPT IN PSYCHOLOGY
• Self concept- is how we perceive our behaviors, abilities, and unique characteristics.
Self-concept tends to be more malleable when we're younger and still going through
self-discovery and identity information. According to lewis (1990) he suggest that
development of concept of self has two(2) aspect.
1. Existential self-This is 'the most basic part of the self-scheme or self-concept; the
sense of being separate and distinct from others and the awareness of the
constancy of the self.
2. Categorical self -The realization that you exist as an individual object in the world,
with distinct properties, such as your age, hair color, and gender.
3 DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF SELF
CONCEPT
1.Self image- This does not necessarily have to reflect reality. Indeed a person with
anorexia who is thin may have a self-image in which the person believes they are fat.
A person’s self image is affected by many factors, such as parental influences,
friends, the media etc.
2.Self- esteem- Self-esteem (also known as self-worth) refers to the extent to which
we like, accept or approve of ourselves, or how much we value ourselves. Self-
esteem always involves a degree of evaluation and we may have either a positive or
a negative view of ourselves.
High self-esteem (we have a positive view of ourselves) This tends to lead to
• Confidence in our own abilities
• Self-acceptance
• Not worrying about what others think
• Optimism
Low self-esteem (we have a negative view of ourselves) This tends to lead to
• Lack of confidence
• Want to be/look like someone else
• Always worrying what others might think
• Pessimism
3. Ideal self- If there is a mismatch between
how you see yourself (e.g., your self-image) and
what you’d like to be (e.g., your ideal-self ) then
this is likely to affect how much you value
yourself.
WHY WE DEVELOP SELF AWARENESS?
• WHAT IS WELLNESS?
- Wellness is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is not a
passive or static state but rather a dynamic and conscious development
of the whole self. Wellness is associated with intentions, choices, and
actions leading toward an optimal state of well-being so that instead of
surviving, you're thriving. Wellness is commonly viewed as having seven
dimensions: Social, occupational, spiritual, intellectual, Emotional,
environmental , physical.
1. Social wellness-is how we interact with our community and those around us. It
includes healthy relationships, consent, communication skills and support systems. It
is also about building a support system of family, friends, peers, and professionals.
2. Occupational wellness- is the ability to achieve a balance between work and leisure in
a way that promotes health, a sense of personal satisfaction and is (for most people)
financially rewarding.
3. Spiritual wellness- is being connected to something greater than yourself and having
a set of values, principles, morals and beliefs that provide a sense of purpose and
meaning to life, then using those principles to guide your actions.
4. Intellectual wellness -means striving toward good mental health, continued
intellectual growth, and creativity in life. This can include continued learning,
practicing problem solving, improving verbal skills, keeping abreast of social and
political issues, and reading books, magazines, and newspapers.
5. Emotional wellness- is defined as coping effectively with life and
creating satisfying relationships.
6. Environmental wellness -is having good health by occupying
pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being. It
promotes interaction with nature and also creating an enjoyable
personal environment (both in and out of your workspace).
7. Physical wellness- is about doing what you can to help strengthen
and care for your body. Taking steps before, during, and after your
treatment can help you manage the effects of the illness and side
effects of treatment.
IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING OUR SELF AWARENESS
- Knowing our self awareness is important for one critical reason: With
self-knowledge, we give ourselves the possibilities to get maximum
fulfilment and happiness in our lives. If you know who you are, it opens
up possibilities of achieving things that you truly want and deserve,
rather than doing things in life that others want you to do or direct you
to do. Once you know who you are, it becomes easily possible to know
where you are headed, what are clearly your goals, and what is the best
route towards achieving them.
