SLS Assignment 1

This document contains an assignment for an electrical engineering signals and linear systems course. The assignment has two parts. Part one instructs students to read a chapter in their textbook and answer four questions. Part two provides seven problems for students to solve, including sketching various functions involving unit step functions and delta functions, taking derivatives and integrals, determining signal periods, expressing signals in terms of unit step and ramp functions, and manipulating a sample signal through shifting and scaling.

Assignment 1

Prepared by:
Eng. MuhammadHashim Iyad Jabr

Under the supervision of:

Prof. Dr. Basil Hamed
Part one
Refer to the text book "Linear system and Signal "
- Read Chapter 1.
- Solve the following questions.
o 1.4.2 - 1.4.3 – 1.4.4 – 1.5.8

Part two
Solve the following problems:
1. Sketch the following functions
a. x(t) = 2u(t)u(2-t) + u(t-3)u(5-t)
b. x(t) = r(t) – r(t-1) – u(t-2)
c. x(t) = exp(-t)u(t)
d. x(t) = 2u(t) + 𝛿𝛿(𝑡𝑡 − 1)

2. Sketch the integral of:

x(t) = u(t+2) – 2u(t+1) + 2u(t) – u(t-2) – 2u(t-3) + 2u(t-4)

3. Sketch the 𝟏𝟏𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔 derivative of:

a. x(t) = u(t) + 5u(t-1) – 2u(t-2)
b. x(t) = r(t) – r(t-1) + 2u(t-2)

4. Evaluate the following integration:

1
a. ∫−2(𝑡𝑡 + 𝑡𝑡 2 ) . 𝛿𝛿(𝜏𝜏 + 3)d𝜏𝜏
4
b. ∫−2(𝑡𝑡 + 𝑡𝑡 2 ) . 𝛿𝛿(𝜏𝜏 − 3)d𝜏𝜏
3
c. ∫0 exp(𝜏𝜏 − 2) . 𝛿𝛿(2𝜏𝜏 − 4)d𝜏𝜏

5. Determine the period of the following signals if it is periodic:

a. x(t) = exp( j7𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋/6 ) + exp(5t/6)
b. x(t) = 2sin(5𝜋𝜋t/2) + √3 cos(3𝜋𝜋t/4 + 10𝜋𝜋)
c. x(t) = 10exp( j4𝜋𝜋t/3) + exp(j5t/6)
d. x(t) = u(cos (2t))
e. x(t) = cos(t).u(t)
6. Write the expression of the following signals in terms of u(t) and r(t)

7. Sketch the signal

1−t, 0≼t≼1
x(t) =
0, otherwise

Now sketch each of the following and describe briefly in words how each of the
signals can be derived from the original signal x(t).
a. x(t+3)
b. x(t/3)
c. x(t/3 +1)
d. x(-t+2)
e. x(-2t+1)
