- The equipment provided by De-Lorenzo has commutators and brushes included, which is found on the
DC motor. The function or the main purpose of the commutator is to ensure that the current inside the
machine is flowing at the right direction. Thus, this allows the motor to maintain a one-way torque
which converts Direct current or DC to an alternating current or AC. The Commutator also acts a way to
reduce friction, prevent the stuck up of the machine and to allow the machine to change voltages to
direct voltage.
9.2 Discuss the importance of back Voltage in the armature windings during motor starting?
- The back voltage or the EMF gives the motor control or allows it to self-regulate whilst limiting the
armature current. As such if the applied voltage is increased, the armature current increases
momentarily thus allowing the speed of the motor to increase. As the motor increases in speed the EMF
or the back voltage also increases which then in turn reduces the armature current.
- The thermocouple or a thermal junction is a temp measuring device that is made up of two wires or
metals that are welded together at both ends. That of which produces a voltage that is proportional to
the difference in temperature between two junctions. Whilst a transducer is a device that transforms or
converts energy from one form to another using a process called transduction.
9.4 Explain how Physical Law, Circuital laws and Newton's law affects the principle of energy conversion
process in an electric motor and generator.
- Physical law affects the principle of energy conversion in terms of position, the accelerations and the
velocity which are all governed by Physical Law of an electric motor and a generator along with other
factors that of which would convert electrical energy to mechanical energy, these parts are known as
the engine, the alternator, the stator, and the armature along with others which make up the machine.
Whilst circuital law affects the principle of energy conversion process as it shows the magnetism
whereas the armature and the windings found at the machine change the polarities inside which then
converts the energy. Newtons law on the other hand is the repetitive exchange of force and polarities in
the stator magnets which then converts the magnetic field into an electric current.
- In the commercial industry, a DC motor is preferred as it has high starting torque and accurate speed
control on a wide range. it serves as a cost effective and highly efficient motor which uses the principles
of magnetism to work, some commercial applications include elevators, rolling mills, locomotives or
rapid transit systems, excavators and even in cranes.
