(6) INTRODUCTION

The pandemic brought out the love and interest of people in plants.
During this time, plants have given many people a new routine as they stay
home most of the time due to lockdowns and quarantines. It gives them more
breaks from screen time, a chance to nurture living things and for those who
sells, it gives them extra income too. There is no doubt that plant sales have
skyrocketed and the time of what we called PlanTitos and PlanTitas have
emerged. But even though they spend time taking care of their plants, there
might still some insects/pests that might affect the health and growth as well
as the production of food-producing plants. Mealybugs are example of those
that infests many plants in garden, landscape and indoor settings.
Treatment of infested areas should be done accordingly. Pesticides in the
market is good but it may contain harmful chemicals that may not be good for
the plants. Using an organic-based pesticide is way better like the neem oil
solution that can be extracted from the neem leaves together with coconut oil.
It can be easily done at home and will save the plants without killing the Earth.

(6.1) RATIONALE/SIGNIFICANCE

Introducing a home remedy that is not well known by many but

will surely make a difference, the researchers wanted to give more chance to
those what can be easily found in our environment and let the people see the
significance of using it as an organic-based pesticide. Neem leaves plays an
important role in this study because its extract have the most active compound
which is Azadirachtin that acts as a repellant to some insects/pests. It can be
easily found here in the Philippines for Neem Trees are introduced as a
reforestation species. Since coconut oil is readily available in the market and
is safe to use and inexpensive, it will be used as the emulsifier to help the
solution stay blended. Using the neem oil solution is kinder to the environment
because it is biodegradable and non-toxic, it’s safe for plants and animals and
also degrade quickly during rainfall and under ultraviolet rays
This study aims to help PlanTitos and PlanTitas as well as plant sellers
with regards to controlling and/or getting rid of the insects/pests especially
mealybugs that are infesting their plants. It can also be a helpful reference to
future researchers who wish to continue to broaden the scope of the study.

(6.3) OBJECTIVES

General:
The objective of this study is to produce a Neem Oil Solution and to
prove if this product is effective as an organic-based pesticide for mealybugs.

Specific:

Specifically, the project aims to:

1. To produce an economical natural pesticide without using any
chemicals;
2. To introduce the value and benefits of neem leaves;
3. To eliminate or control insects/pests that are harmful to plants.
(7) METHODOLOGY

Materials

For the process of making the neem oil solution, the materials that will
be utilized are twenty (20) pieces of neem leaves which its extract will be the
main ingredient, one hundred (100) ml coconut oil that will serve as the
emulsifier, blending machine for the leaves, pot for the boiling of the blended
leaves and coconut oil, cloth strainer to filter the solution and a glass jar with
lid to put the filtered solution. To produce the organic-based pesticide, the
neem oil solution, water, and spraying bottle will be needed. Measuring cup
will be used for the coconut oil, neem oil solution and water.

Methods

In making the neem oil solution, twenty (20) pieces of neem leaves will
be blended for at least twenty (20) minutes. Then, boil the blended leaves in a
pot together with one hundred (100) ml of coconut oil. The boiling process must
be on low heat for ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes. Allow it to rest for two (2) or
more hours. Filter the liquid into a glass jar using a cloth as a strainer and
cover with a tight lid. Store it in a cool dry place where direct sunlight cannot
reach it.
For the organic-based pesticide, mix ten (10) ml of neem oil solution for
every one hundred (100) ml of water. Put it in a spraying bottle and mist it into
the plant. Remember to use it only in indirect sunlight or in the evening to
allow the treatment to seep into the plant.
