Civil engineering materials and construction joints can be categorized as:
1) Construction joints, which are placed between concrete placements to allow horizontal displacement from thermal expansion and contraction but prevent vertical movement.
2) Expansion joints, which are gaps that allow structures to expand from temperature changes without buckling. They are commonly found between sections of buildings.
3) Contraction joints, which are weakened planes or grooves in concrete slabs that control where cracks form from dimensional changes and prevent water infiltration. They are typically spaced every 3.1 to 15 meters.

By Dr. Chandan Kumar Singh,
Dept. of Civil Engineering NIT, Raipur, CG Joints: Construction, Contraction and Expansion Joints in buildings.
The following are the common concrete joint,
1.Concrete Construction joints 2.Expansion joints 3.Contraction joints 4.Isolation joints 5.Decorative concrete joints Construction Joint
• The Construction Joint in concrete used to to
prevent any crack during its life period. • Concrete has the property of expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, which is resulting in a change in the volume of concrete. • This change in the volume of concrete can be a cause of concrete cracking. • Therefore, to prevent concrete crack construction joints are provided in concrete. Construction Joint
• Construction joints are generally placed in the
concrete slab to determine the extent of the individual placements. It is generally in conformity with a predetermined joint layout.
• Construction joints are designed in order to allow the
displacement between each (both) side of the slab but, they also transfer the flexural stresses produced in the slab by the external loads at the same time.
• Construction joints allow only the horizontal
displacement which is right-angled to the joint surface that is normally caused by the thermal or shrinkage movement. Vertical or rotational displacement is not allowed by the joint at the same time. Expansion joint • Some time due to many reasons volume of the concrete is Such joints provides the space into which change. For these reasons, we provide the joint to relieve the pavement can expand thus relieving stress. The building that length is more than 45m provided one compressive stresses due to expansion and or more expansion joints. inhibiting any tendency towards buckling of • In India, it recommended in the building that the c/c distance is concrete slabs. 30m. Expansion joint means a GAP is provided between the parts of the building. • An expansion joint or movement joint is an assembly designed to hold parts together while safely absorbing temperature- induced expansion and contraction of building materials, and vibration, or to allow movement due to ground settlement or seismic activity. • They are commonly found between sections of buildings, bridges, sidewalks, railway tracks, piping systems, ships, and other structures. • Building faces, concrete slabs, and pipelines expand and contract due to warming and cooling from seasonal variation, or due to other heat sources. Before expansion joint gaps were built into these structures, they would crack under the stress induced. Contraction joint
• Contraction joint which is made in the concrete slab
with help of the sawed or it should be created or groove which creates a weakened vertical plane. Cracks in the slab due to the dimensional changes are resisting by the contraction joint.
• Due to the unregulated cracks can grow or the water is
infiltrated in the base, sub-base or subgrade of pavement creates other types of distress in the pavement.
• It is the most common type of joint in pavements, so
the term “joint” refers to a contraction joint. Contraction joints are defined by their spacing and • Such joints relieves tensile stresses in the concrete and their method of load transfer. In the slab, contraction is prevents formation of irregular cracks due to restraint in provided at the 1/4 – 1/3 the depth of the slab or free contraction of concrete . It also relieve stresses due typically spaced every 3.1 to 15m to warping.
