ASSIGNMENT # 2

JNU University Origin: JNU was established in 1969, three years after the Indian

Parliament passed an act authorizing its formation. The University's founding purpose was

"national integration, social justice, secularism, the democratic way of life, international

understanding, and a scientific approach to societal problems." JNU doctoral supervisors are

known to keep 30 times the number of MPhil and PhD students than "normal," flouting all

academic rigour and integrity standards. The author provides examples of queries that were

posed, albeit gently, during the selection process. The answers to those questions compel one to

reveal one's political and ideological views on a variety of issues. As a premier liberal arts

college, one would expect it to include programmes dedicated to the development of Sanskrit

scholarship. The University, on the other hand, featured multiple non-Indic language

departments from the start, and a Sanskrit centre would have to wait around 30 years to be

operational.

Sheela Rashid : Sheela rashid won the JNU student union election for vice president in

September 2015 as the nominee of the left-wing All India Student Association (AISA). She was

the first Kashmiri girl to win a JNU student union election. Achievements of JNU University.

She joined the JNU and enrolled as an M.A sociology student to broaden her activism. JNU

offers her with the necessary platform for her activity, and she has gone on to pursue a PhD at

JNU. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) filed an F.I.R. against her for allegedly disrespecting

and making objectionable remarks about Prophet Muhammad. However, the F.I.R. was removed

after she erased a Facebook post that was disrespectful to Prophet Muhammad.
Umar Khalid : On August 11, 1987, Umar Khalid was born. Umar Khalid is an Indian

activist and former member of Jawaharlal Nehru University's Democratic Students' Union. He

completed his studies at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. JNLL students

demonstrated in opposition to the death penalty being imposed on Afzal Guru and Maqbool

Bhat. He is a defendant under the UAPA legislation, allegedly involved in the sedition case at

Jawaharlal Nehru University. Khalid is also a part of United Against Hate, a group he co-

founded with Nadeem Khan in response to a wave of lynchings in July 2017. After the students

created a disturbance, Umar Khalid was expelled from university for one semester. In addition,

he was denied the opportunity to submit his Ph.D. thesis in 2018. However, when he went to the

Supreme Court to present his thesis, he was granted permission. He also took part in the Bhima

Koregaon incident. He was arrested for making hateful words with the intent of inciting hatred.

After the incident on Independence Day, Khalid also attempted to exit the country. He was

caught, however, on August 20, 2018. UAPA hired him to deliver divisive talks during Donald

Trump's visit to India, adding to his controversies.

Kanhaiya kumar : Kanhaiya, who was born in Begusarai, Bihar, in 1987, became involved

in student politics while attending the College of Commerce in Patna. He earned a doctorate in

African Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2019 after graduating with honours in

Geography. Kanhaiya was president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union

(JNUSU) in 2016 when a major controversy emerged over chants yelled at a university-

sponsored event. A first information report (FIR) was filed against him and several other

university students. He was later detained for supposed seditious actions and released on bail. A
magisterial inquiry, however, ruled that there was no video footage of him partaking in the

alleged 'anti-national' sloganeering that night.

Studnet Politics In JNU : In a nutshell, the political environment at JNU is anti-state. The

student political party DSU follows Maoist ideology, which states that revolution in India will

come through war and guns, and they see Indian government machinery such as the police, army,

and CRPF as the primary barrier to revolution. Another tenth of JNU's small and large student

political parties support Maoism, Naxalism, and the independence of Indian states from India.

JNU is a rich platform for left-wing politics due to the association of prominent marxist names

like sitaram yechuri, brinda karat, romila thapar, and others. By targeting right-wing students,

left-wing students receive direct support from professors in both academics and politics. Because

11 parties belong to communist ideology and just one group, the ABVP, adheres to the right

wing, the left wing has greater popularity among JNU students. Professors are the mentors of the

left wing party, and if somebody goes against the left wing, they can be targeted as an ABVP

member, and then professors target them on academic grounds and damage their career. As a

result, for their future careers, the majority of students will either support the left wing or remain

neutral.
Achievements Of Students Politics :

1. Subrahmanyam jaishankar : He has been India's Foreign Secretary since January

2015, and he is also one of the Prime Minister's senior advisors. Previously, he served as India's

Ambassador to the United States, China, and the Czech Republic. Jaishankar was also

instrumental in negotiating the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal. He completed his M.Phil. and

Ph.D. from JNU.

2. Arvind Gupta : He is currently the Indian Deputy National Security Advisor. He joined

the National Security Council Secretariat immediately after its establishment in 1998 and

remained there until 2007. Gupta has also worked at Indian diplomatic missions in Moscow,

London, and Ankara in various roles. He received his Ph.D. from JNU.

3. Nirmala Sitharaman : She is currently the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the

Ministry of Commerce and Industry. She is also a Minister of State for Finance and Corporate

Affairs in Arun Jaitley's Ministry of Finance. JNU is where she earned her M.A. in Economics.

4. Harun Rashid Khan : Mr. Khan is the Reserve Bank of India's Deputy Governor. He has

also served as an Executive Director of the RBI and as a Director of NABARD (National Bank

for Agriculture and Rural Development). He received his M.Phil. from JNU.
5. Venu Rajamony: Rajamony is the current Press Secretary to India's President, Pranab

Mukherjee. He previously led the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance,

Government of India's Multilateral Institutions Division. JNU is where he earned his M.A. in

International Studies.

Importance of JNU University from political point of view : JNU has a tradition of

enabling free democratic debates and deliberations to all students, regardless of political

affiliation. This culture has fostered a legacy of students who are broad-minded, well-versed in

the concept of democracy, and open to all sorts of ideas, which, judging by their illustrious

alumni who have occupied all top positions in the country over the years (and globally as well),

says a lot about the academic atmosphere JNU has provided in shaping their students' minds and

outlook.

Students In JNU Are Anti-National : JNU's academic culture is well regarded. It is

necessary to uncover the anti-national socialist element in it. It's ironic that some of these leftist

student 'netas' are claiming vindication because JNU is still ranked second best in the country.
