Experiment No 4: Title Buckling Analysis of Beam, Critical Loading, Modes Shapes and Factor of Safety in Ansys Theory

This document summarizes an Ansys simulation analyzing buckling of a beam. It describes Ansys software capabilities and components. The experiment involves creating a beam geometry in Ansys, applying a vertical force, and using static structural and eigenvalue buckling analyses to determine the buckling load and deformation modes. The results found the applied force of -10000 lb was safe and the critical buckling load was 42714 lb based on the lowest deformation mode shape.

Title
Buckling analysis of beam, critical loading, modes shapes and factor of safety
in Ansys
Theory
Ansys, Inc. is an American company based in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. It develops and
markets multiphasic engineering simulation software for product design, testing and
operation and offers its products and services to customers worldwide. Ansys was founded
in 1970 by John Swanson. Swanson sold his interest in the company to venture capitalists in
1993. Ansys went public on NASDAQ in 1996. In the 2000s, Ansys acquired numerous other
engineering design companies, obtaining additional technology for fluid dynamics,
electronics design, and other physics analysis. Ansys became a component of the NASDAQ-
100 index on December 23, 2019.

Buckling in static structure
First choose the static structural analysis
if I have a column under vertical loading, if the critical load goes beyond the Euler critical
buckling load, does the column buckle if we are ONLY in the Static Structural modulus of
workbench, or it is necessary to use the Eigenvalue Buckling analysis as well I am asking this
question, because I would like to know the deformation mechanism in more complex
structures. For example, in an open cellular structure, (image attached) under vertical
loading, can we differentiate which part of deformation in a strut was due to buckling and
which part due to bending.

Then choose the eigenvalue buckling and shift it upto the model of static structure
Shifting solution of static structure to setup of eigenvalue buckling
Changing units to

Engineering data
Geometry
Starting with choosing plane x-y
Drawing the line of 100 inches
Then covert it into line from sketches then generate it

Then converting this line to I cross section

Dimensioning the I beam
Model
Now the beam is ready for meshing
Mesh is generated

Changing the sizing from coarse to fine and update it

Fixed support is inserted at one vertex of line and the force is applied to the other end of
line
Setup
Total deformation is applied to static structure and the eigenvalue buckling
Then solve it
Total deformation in eigenvalue buckling
Buckling load is 42714

Total deformation in static structure

Now applying mode 2 for total deformation in eigenvalue buckling and evaluate all results
For force -10000 lb in y direction

For mode 2
Insert the beam tool to static structure

To evaluate the stress

Results and Discussions:
The force is applied on beam and the -10000 lb force is safe. Total deformation in Eigenvalue
buckling, the buckling load is 4.2174. For practical purposes only the lowest mode is of significance,
and a coarser mesh than used here would give that mode accurately.
