Math CompreA (OAC)

The document contains the comprehensive examination questions for a mathematics course. Question 1 asks students to (1) find the parametric representation of a particle moving clockwise along a circle, and (2) find the tangential and normal components of acceleration, curvature, and torque of a particle moving in space. Question 2 asks students to (1) construct a distance function from a point on a paraboloid to another point and minimize the distance, and (2) find the volume of a solid bounded by planes and a parabolic cylinder.

Date: February 28, 2022 Time: 60 Minutes Max. Marks: 40

Note:

• Notations/symbols have their usual meaning.

• Start new question on a fresh page. Moreover, answer each subpart of a question in continuation.
• Draw the figures as and when required.

1. (a) Find the parametric representation of the motion of a particle moving in clockwise direction viewed
from top, along a circle in the plane z = 2 with the center (1, −1, 2) and passing through (0, 0, 2)
so that particle starts from the point (0, −2, 2) and ends at (0, 0, 2). [3]

(b) Suppose that a particle moves in space so that its position vector at time t is:

r(t) = ti + t2 j + t3 k

i. Find the tangential and normal components of acceleration at time t = 1. [3]

ii. Find the curvature of the path at the point where the particle is located at time t = 1. [2]

iii. Find the torque τ at t = 1 [4]

(c) Find the equation of normal plane and rectifying plane for the following plane curve at t = 1,
 3 2
t t
r(t) = i+ j, t > 0 [8]
3 2

2. (a) Construct a function d(x, y) giving the distance from a point (x, y, z) on the paraboloid z = 4−x2 −y 2
to the point (3, −2, 1). Then determine the point that minimize d(x, y). [10]

(b) Find the volume of the solid bounded by the parabolic cylinder x = y 2 and the planes x = z, z = 0
and x = 1. [10]
