WHAT IS IT
Occupational health and safety (OHS) refers to the legislation, policies, procedures
and activities that aim to protect the health, safety and welfare of all people at the workplace.
Workplace safety is an important part of any job and requires that everyone in the
company adhere to the safety guidelines and policies in place. Carefully following appropriate
safety guidelines can go a long way toward preventing workplace injuries.
To ensure health and safety in every workplace, Occupational Health and Safety
procedure must be observed.
According to the International Labour Organization, more than 7,600 people die from
work-related accidents or diseases every single day. That’s why an ISO committee of
occupational health & safety experts set to work to develop an International Standard with the
potential to save almost three million lives each year.
3
Here are the Computer Systems Servicing OHS tips:
1. Do not work alone so that there’s someone who can take care of you in case of an
emergency.
2. Always power off the computer and unplug the computer before working on it.
3. Take away any liquid near your working area to avoid getting electrocuted or accidentally
damaging computer parts.
4. Be careful with tools that may cause a short circuit.
5. Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the computer.
6. Do not use excessive force if things don’t quite slip into place.
7. Clean the area before and after using it to maintain sanitation and prevent accidents.
8. Hold the components on the edges and do not touch the Integrated Circuit (IC) parts.
9. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with the organization’s
OHS procedures and practices.
10. Make sure that the pins are properly aligned when connecting a cable connector.
11. Contingency measures during workplace accidents, fire, and other emergencies are
recognized.
12. Use a brush, compressed air, or blower in cleaning the computer system.

Here are some safety precautions to take before working with any computer devices:
What is 5S?
Manufacturing companies are all familiar with the 5S methodology to organize the
workspace for efficiency and effectiveness. 5S are Japanese words that starts with letter “S”
namely: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke. Amazingly, transliterated into English, they
all start with letter S: sort, set, shine, standardize, sustain. (Credit goes to Hiroyuki Hirano and
his overall approach to production system)

implemented as part of 5S to make any process non-conformance’s obvious and easily
detectable. 5S is often one element of a larger Lean initiative and promotes continuous
improvement.

There are many benefits to implementing the 5S Methods into a work area on the
production line or in the business office. The 5S steps, when implemented properly, can
identify and reduce many forms of waste in any process or workstation. An organized work
area reduces excessive motion and wasted time looking for the right tool. When everything
has a place, it is easier to spot something missing or misplaced. A clean work area helps
draw attention to possible problems or safety hazards. A clean floor helps spot any leaks or
spills could indicate machine maintenance and prevent slips and falls. Furthermore,
encouraging people to watch for and address problems can result in a positive change to an
organizations culture. Therefore, the 5S Principles implemented as part of a larger Lean
initiative or as a standalone tool can reduce waste, improve quality, promote safety and drive
continuous improvement.
5S is not simply a list of action items. It is an integrated concept of action, condition
and culture. The nature and implication of each S can be understood as follows:
1. SEIRI (SORT) is an action to identify and eliminate all unnecessary items from your
workplace.
Goals:
Reduce time loss looking for an item by reducing the number of unnecessary items.
Reduce the chance of distraction by unnecessary items.
Simplify inspection.
Increase the amount of available, useful space.
Increase safety by eliminating obstacles.
Implementation:
Check all items in a location and evaluate whether or not their presence at the location is
useful or necessary.
6
Remove unnecessary items as soon as possible. Place those that cannot be removed
immediately in a 'red tag area' so that they are easy to remove later on.
Keep the working floor clear of materials except for those that are in use for production.
Implementation:
Arrange work stations in such a way that all tooling / equipment is in close proximity, in an
easy to reach spot and in a logical order adapted to the work performed. Place
components according to their uses, with the frequently used components being nearest
to the workplace.
Arrange all necessary items so that they can be easily selected for use. Make it easy to
find and pick up necessary items.
Assign fixed locations for items. Use clear labels, marks or hints so that items are easy to
return to the correct location and so that it is easy to spot missing items.
Implementation:
Clean the workplace and equipment on a daily basis, or at another appropriate (high
frequency) cleaning interval.
Inspect the workplace and equipment while cleaning.
Implementation:
Develop a work structure that will support the new practices and make it part of the daily
routine.
Ensure everyone knows their responsibilities of performing the sorting, organizing and
cleaning.
7
Use photos and visual controls to help keep everything as it should be.
Review the status of 5S implementation regularly using audit checklists.
Implementation:
Organize training sessions.
Perform regular audits to ensure that all defined standards are being implemented and
followed.
Implement improvements whenever possible. Worker inputs can be very valuable for
identifying improvements.
When issues arise, identify their cause and implement the changes necessary to avoid
recurrence.
