I. TABLEAU INSTALLATION
1. Tableau Desktop installation
1.1. Download the package
v Step 01: Go to Tableau website

(https://www.tableau.com/products/trial) to download Tableau desktop
version
v Step 02: Click TRY NOW
v Step 03: Enter email to download. Then click the DOWNLOAD TREE
TRIAL button, and a 400-MB-setup-package will default be downloaded, or
v Step 04: You will choose which version OS to download
1.2. Install the package
v Recommendation hardware:
ü 64-bit architecture only (come on people it’s 2017)
ü Microsoft Windows 7 SP2 or newer (or Microsoft Server 2008 R2 of

newer)
ü Intel Core i3/i5 or AMD Athlon processor or newer
ü 8GB memory (to cope with large datasets and complex workbooks)

ü Solid-state drive (SSD) disk, with 5 GB minimum free disk space
ü IE9 or newer
v After downloading, install the package as usual, there is no notification

installing on desktop version
v On the last step of installation, enter license key or choosing trial

version. Here is enter-key screen:
1.3. Test after installing package
v Open the product after installing, the first look of icon and first time
open screen should be like this:

2. Tableau Server installation
2.1. Download the package
v Step 01: Go to Tableau website

(https://www.tableau.com/products/server/options) to download Tableau
server version
v Step 02: Choosing On-Premise, next
v Step 03: Enter email to download. Then click the DOWNLOAD TREE
TRIAL button, and a 400-MB-setup-package will default be downloaded

2.2. Install and configuring the server package
v On Cloud: Tableau will serve. Please contact Tableau staff (tableau.com)
v On Premise: Recommendation hardware:
ü 64-bit architecture only (come on people it’s 2017)

3. Tableau Online installation
3.1. Install the package online
v Go to Online version (https://www.tableau.com/products/cloud-bi), click

TRY FOR FREE
v A form appears to input data in to get Tableau Online, then an email will
be sent to you to validate, credentail to login Tableau online.
v After a while installing online, the web will appear like this for you to
login as credential registered & responded email.

3.2. Test after online installing package

1.2. Products required for small organization (<100 workers)
v Should use Tableau Desktop and Tableau Online
v Tableau Desktop: for authorize data, building chart, analyze data, export
to Server/Online version
v Tableau Online: for viewing, editing, semi-analyze data, sharing ideas,

chat with members online (over internet)
1.3. Products required for big organization (>100 workers)
v Should use Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server
v Tableau Desktop: for connect data sources, authorize data, building

chart, analyze data, export to Server/Online version
v Tableau Server: for viewing, editing, semi-analyze data sharing ideas,

chat with members internal/external/online purposes.
2. Preparing Data
2.1. Data from data sources (database, data warehouse, data lake… SAP,
Oracle, MS SQL….)
2.1.1. From HVN SAP DBM – MS SQL

2.1.1.1. Connect to data sources
v Open Tableau Desktop to connect to data source (server name/ db

name, user and password are needed)

v Run and check SQL query on SQL tool
ü In this case, our query is:
v Consideration:
ü The query should be implemented first via server side, or other SQL
management tool to validate/refine data and query accuracy, example - on
our management tool:
2.1.1.2. Choosing right data table
v Consideration

ü Each business has it own data and has some data tables to get the right
data on
ü So let us build the query from SQL tool, and refine the result, refine the
right tables to choose
ü Example: after a while exploring from over 70k tables on SAP, we found 3 tables that
relate to data we need:
• ZKPMxxx_target
• T003xxx
• MNTVBxxx
2.1.1.3. Clean data
v Consider validating whether data is compatible with following format, if

not please clean/reformat to match Tableau data:
ü Type string
ü Type of number
v To analyze data best, all data must be available, there should not be
any NULL values
2.1.1.4. Build SQL query
v Run the query on Tableau:
v After SQL query is OK, run it on Tableau Desktop. Result should be like
this:

2.1.1.5. Optimize SQL query
v Check the result output, and refine the query until it is optimized. The
quality of data is:
ü There is no double value each row of data output
ü There is no NULL value
ü The amount of data must be correct as stated as real data reported

from Sale department.
2.1.2. From HVN PC PACK Oracle

v Open Excel file
v Check data is whether valid with Tableau data format (string, number),
and there should be no NULL value:
3. Preparing a customized geography map
3.1. From MapBox
3.1.1. Create mapbox style

v Why this? – to create a customized geographical map. Each map has it
own style (texture covers on map), dataset (data points on map) to view,
tileset (data areas appears on map) to view
v Registration an account on mapbox.com

v Add new style
v Then, go to add dataset & tileset
3.1.2. Add dataset

v Why this? – to add a customized point to the map.
v Prepare dataset on Excel file, here we use

(https://www.doogal.co.uk/BatchGeocoding.php) for getting long & lat from
location name. Example: Bac Ninh, from VietNam will be:

v And post on Excel for import Tableau
v Choose from mapbox to open and upload dataset Excel file

v Export and add to mapbox style

v View and edit dataset on style
v Edit dataset layer on style

v Add icon, text to style

v Google search an SVG Honda icon for car, and add Honda icon to icon
set and put on style
3.1.3. Add tileset

v Why this? – to add a customized area to the map.
v Build tileset from (http://geojson.io/), search Vietnam, and draw area

Hanoi:
v Export to GeoJson format

v Import to Tileset
v Add tileset to style
v Edit title set on style

3.1.4. Export style

3.1.5. Import map to Tableau

v Choose to develop export, and choose Tableau then copy the URL.

v Import that URL map to Tableau

4. Tableau building chart guideline
4.1. Workbench intro
4.1.1. Tableau desktop

v Design chart screen workbench (on Tableau Desktop)
ü Area 1: choosing data source to connect
ü Area 2: Fields of data to drag in chart or, analytics method to apply
ü Area 3: Controls to edit chart (data source to add, switch y & x axis,
share chart, slideshow chart, sorting data y or x…)

v Open data/connect to host SAP DBM, like steps on 2.1 above
4.2.1.3. Combine and refine data
v Refine again to check null value, wrong value, be sure all data should
be: string or number
4.2.1.4. Drag to the right chart & adding filter
v Drag fields into right areas as following:
