You have learned in the previous lesson that the two equivalent ratios form a
proportion. In this lesson, you will learn on how to find a missing term in a proportion
(direct, inverse, and partitive).
Direct proportion is an equality of ratios where an increase in one quantity and
causes an increase in another quantity or a decrease in one quantity causes a
decrease in another quantity.
Inverse proportion, an opposite of direct proportion where an increase in one
quantity and causes a decrease in the other quantity or a decrease in one quantity
causes an increase in another quantity.
Partitive proportion, shows the total number of an object distributed into two or
more unequal quantities.
In this topic you will understand the differences of these proportions including
their practical applications.

What’s In

Find the missing term of the following proportions using the steps. Answer it on page
28.

1. 12 : N = 2 : 3

2. 54 : 27 = N : 1

3. 5 = N
9 90

4. 3 : 7 = 27 : N

5. 18 : 21 = N : 63

6. 3 = N
5 15

7. 4 : 9 = 32 : N

8. N : 8 = 35 : 40

9. 8 = 24
9 N

10. 8 : N = 88 : 99

You have learned in the previous lesson that in a direct proportion, when one
quantity increases, the other quantity increases at the same rate and vice versa while
in an inverse proportion, the change of one quantity will give an opposite effect to the
next quantity. Also, in partitive proportion, a whole is divided into parts that is
proportional to the given ratio.
In this topic further understanding will be assured especially on how to solve
problems involving direct proportion, partitive proportion, and inverse proportion in
different contexts such as distance, rate, and time using appropriate strategies and tools.
9
What’s New

Illustrative Examples:
1. During COVID 19 pandemic, Barangay Unity distributed relief goods to
the 120 families and consumed 1500 kilos of rice for 3 weeks. If there were only 1000
kilos of rice, how long will the families consume this volume of rice?

This situation shows the relationship among the number of families, the number
of kilos of rice and the number of days to consume the rice.
From the given condition above, we can see that the more the kilos of rice
there is, the longer it will last for 120 families. So, this is an example of a direct
proportion through the contexts of time on how long the families consume the volume
of rice. Remember that in a direct proportion, as one quantity increases, another
quantity also increases at the same rate. Similarly, a decrease in one quantity implies
a decrease in another by the same rate.

Solution:
Step 1: Identify the given ratios : 1500 kl : 3 weeks, 1000 kl : N

Step 2: Make a proportion out from the given ratio.

1500 : 3 weeks = 1000 kl : N

Step 3: Identify the Means : 3 weeks, 1000 kl

Step 4: Identify the Extremes: 1500 kl, N

Step 5: Multiply the Means: 3 weeks x 1000 kl = 3000 (weeks)(kl)

Step 6: Multiply the Extremes. 1500 kl x N = 1500 (kl) (N)

Step 7: Equate the product of the Means and the Extremes.
3000 (weeks)(kl) = 1500 (kl)(N)

Step 8: Solve for the missing term.

3000 (weeks)(kl) = 1500 (kl)(N)
1500 kl 1500 kl
N = 3000 weeks
1500
N = 2 weeks

Hence, it only has 2 weeks to consume the given volume of rice.

10
2. During Covid 19 pandemic it takes Kim 20 minutes to ride his bicycle at
a rate of 20kph from home to the grocery store. To shorten his travel time to 16 minutes
for the same distance, how fast should he cycle?

In this situation, the faster the bicycle is driven, the less time is required to reach
the destination. So, this is inverse proportion through the contexts of time because it
talks about how fast he should cycle if his travel will be shorten with same distance.
With this, the decrease of time needed may result to an increase in speed.

Solution:
Step 1: Identify the given ratios : 20 min : 20 kph, 16 min : N

Since this is an inverse proportion, make a new ratios of the same

quantities. That is,
20 kph : N, 16min : 20 min.

Step 2: Make a proportion out from the given ratio.

20 ph : N = 16min : 20min

Step 3: Identify the Means : N, 16 min

Step 4: Identify the Extremes: 20 kph, 20 min

Step 5: Multiply the Means: N x 16 min = 16 (min)(N)

Step 6: Multiply the Extremes. 20kph x 20 min = 400 (kph)(min)

Step 7: Equate the product of the Means and the Extremes.

16 (min)(N) = 400 (kph)(min)

Step 8: Solve for the missing term.

16 (min)(N) = 400 (kph)(min)

16 min 16 min
N = 400 kph
16
N = 25 kph

Hence, Kim should have a speed of 25 kph to shorten the time to 16

minutes.

11
3. Mr. Emmerson Gomez, an owner of a restaurant, would like to divide his
property worth 9,756,000 pesos to his 4 children in the ratio 3: 4 : 5 : 6, How
much would each child receive?

In particular, the ratio of money to his children is 3: 4 : 5 : 6 illustrates a partition.

Therefore, this belongs to a partitive proportion.

Solution:
Step 1: Identify the given totality : ₱ 9,756,000
Step 2: Represent the common partition as N.
Step 3: Multiply each ratio by the common partition N.
(3 : 4 : 5 : 6 ) x N
3N : 4N : 5N : 6N

Step 4: Add the product of the common partition N and the ratio.
3N + 4N + 5N + 6N

Step 5: Equate the sum of the product of the common partition N and the
ratio to the given totality.
3N + 4N + 5N + 6N = ₱9,756,000

Step 6: Solve for the missing term.

3N + 4N + 5N + 6N = ₱9,756,000
18N = ₱9,756,000
18 18
N = ₱542,000

Step 7: Simplify. N = ₱542,000 as the common partition

3N = 3 (₱542,000) = ₱1,626,000
4N = 4 (₱542,000) = ₱2,168,000
5N = 5 (₱542,000) = ₱2,710,000
6N = 6 (₱542,000) = ₱3,252,000

Therefore, Mr Emmerson’ children will receive ₱1 626 000, ₱2 168 000,

₱2 710 000 and ₱3 252 000 respectively.

Step 8: Check:
₱1 626 000 + ₱2 168 000 + ₱2 710 000 + ₱3 252 000 = ₱ 9 756 000

12
What is It

Solve for the values pertaining to each component of the direct, inverse and
partitive proportions.

1. John has a rope 56 m long and he wants to cut in the ratio 3:5. How long is the
longer part of the rope?

Solution: (partitive proportion)

Step 1: Identify the given totality : 56 m
Step 2: Represent the common partition as N.
Step 3: Multiply each ratio by the common partition N.
(3 : 5 ) x N
3N : 5N
Step 4: Add the product of the common partition N and the ratio.
3N + 5N
Step 5: Equate the sum of the product of the common partition N and
the ratio to the given totality.
3N + 5N = 56 m
Step 6: Solve for the missing term.
3N + 5N = 56 m
8N = 56
8 8
N = 7m
Step 7: Simplify.
N = 7m as the common partition
3N = 3 (7) = 21 m
5N = 5 (7) = 35 m

Thus, the longer part of the rope measures 35 m.

2. Kyle donated snacks to the frontliners and she paid ₱590.00 for two large
pizzas. How much would she pay for 8 large pizzas?

Solution: (direct proportion)

Step 1: Identify the given ratios : ₱590 : 2 large pizzas, N : 8 large
pizzas
Step 2: Make a proportion out from the given ratio.
₱590 : 2 large pizzas = N : 8 large pizzas
Step 3: Identify the Means : 2 large pizzas, N
Step 4: Identify the Extremes: ₱590, 8 large pizzas
Step 5: Multiply the Means: 2 large pizzas x N = 2 (large pizzas) (N)

13
Step 6: Multiply the Extremes. ₱590 x 8 large pizzas = ₱4,720 (large
pizzas)
Step 7: Equate the product of the Means and the Extremes.
2 (large pizzas) (N) = ₱4,720 (large pizzas)
Step 8: Solve for the missing term.
2 (large pizzas) (N) = ₱4,720 (large pizzas)
2 large pizzas 2 large pizzas
N = ₱ 4,720
2
N = ₱ 2,360

Hence, ₱2,360 is the cost of 8 large pizzas.

3. Kylah wanted to go to her grandma’s house which is 900 m from her house. If
she walked with a speed of 15 meter per minute, she will be there in an hour. If
she increased her speed to 18 meter per minute, how long would Kyla take to
reach her grandma’s house?

Solution:
Step 1: Identify the given ratios :
15 m/ min : 60 min or 1 hour, 18 m/min : N
Since this is an inverse proportion, make a new ratios of the same quantities. That is,
15 /min : 18 m/min, N : 60 min
Step 2: Make a proportion out from the given ratio.
15 /minute: 18 m/min= N : 60 min

Step 3: Identify the Means : 18 m/ min, N

Step 4: Identify the Extremes: 15 m/min, 60 min
Step 5: Multiply the Means: N x 18 m/ min = 18 (m/min)(N)
Step 6: Multiply the Extremes. 15 m/min x 60 min = 900 (m/min)( min)
Step 7: Equate the product of the Means and the Extremes.
18m/min)(N)= 900 (m/min)( min)
Step 8: Solve for the missing term.
18m/min)(N) = 900 (m/min)( min)
18 m/min 18 m/min
N = 900 min
18
N = 50 minutes

Hence, it will take 50 minutes for Kylah to reach her grandma’s house.
