A. Introduction

Look around you. Many of the things that used to be manipulated by the
hand can now be done by computers. Look at the cover of your book.
Are there pictures on it? Those pictures are created using computer.
Colors were added using the computer. The entire design of the cover
was completed using the computer.
In this lesson you will revisit the different elements and principles of art
and how they apply in digital art. You will also be introduced to the
world of digital art and how and for what it is used for today.

B. Development Look at the pictures below. One of the pictures was created by computer
and one is drawn by hand. Can you tell which is which? How are the
drawings similar and how are they different? How were the elements
and principles applied in each drawing?

You have learned in your past art classes how the different elements of
art like lines, shapes, colors and textures are used and combined to create
wonderful images, paintings and sculptures. You have learned how
appreciate harmony and balance or how colors and texture are used to
create contrast and emphasis in an artwork.

In visual media, computers are used nowadays for:

● Desktop Publishing (magazines, books, newspapers,

brochures, flyers, pamphlets)

● Graphic Design ( television commercials, T-shirt designs,

company and organizational logos and more)

How do 2D and 3D art differ?

● 2D art is imitating traditional art using computer graphics

software. Drawings, portraits, even landscapes can be created
using the computer and then printed on paper to produce two -
dimensional art.

● 3D Graphics/3D Art are achieved via the process of designing

objects from geometric and polygonal shapes, or more
technically termed as NURBS curves to create three
dimensional objects and scenes. These are used in various
media such as film, television, print, animation, rapid
prototyping, games and special visual effects.

Ask: What will you choose as your medium? Traditional handmade art
or modern traditional art? Why?

C. Engagement

ART CRITICISM
Guide Questions for art criticism

Description: What do I see? (feel, hear, smell, taste)?

•Subject Matter: Does the artwork depict anything? If so, what?

•Medium: What tools, materials, or processes did the art make use?

•Form: What elements did the maker choose and how did the maker
organize the elements?

*Interpretation: What is the artwork about?

•Interpretive Statement: Can I express what I think the artwork is

about in one sentence?

D. Assimilation Remember:

The computer is a fascinating tool that offers endless possibilities! With

it, you can browse the Internet, play your favorite video games and even
draw or create art works in it. Today, along with traditional methods,
digital arts has become very popular since the same artistic thinking and
skills are applied by the artist.

IV. PROCEDURES

A.Introduction Have a short review of the elements and principles of arts that can be
applied using technology.

Have you ever tried using computer software to draw something?

Although most software is expensive, these are those that you can
download for free. Once you use them, you will find out the most
features that allow you to create lines and shapes, and change these lines
to thick lines and vice versa are common. You can ever erase and do it
over again.

B.Development Basic Drawing Tools

● Pencil Tool is used to draw free lines onto the picture.

● Paint Bucket Tool is used to fill an area with a solid color or

pattern.

● Square Tool is used to create a perfect square or rectangular

shapes. By changing the line thickness in the Line Tool, you
could change the thickness of the square.

● Line Tool is used to create perfectly straight lines.

● Circle Tool is used to create perfect circles.

Selection and Erasing Tools

● Moving Truck Tool allows various parts of the image to be

selected and moved around the canvas.

● Erasing Tools provide different ways to erase various parts of

your drawing.

● Dye Tool is used to pick out colors already used somewhere in

the canvas.

Text Insertion

● Text Tool includes rubber stamps of the letters of the alphabet,

which tell the name of the letter when selected.

● Typing Tool has basic functions that add text to the image in
different fonts and various sizes.

● Opacity gives the degree to which something reduces the

passage of light.

You will notice that you can create all the elements of art such as lines,
shapes, color and texture using the tools available in most drawing
software. By practicing you can become better at it and create digital art
much like the way you do it in traditional art.

C.Engagement Gear Up. Using your cellphone , tablets or laptop with a drawing
software that you are familiar with draw the following elements:

1. Straight lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal)

2. Curved lines ( spiral, wavy, swirl)

3. Geometric shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, square in different sizes

If computer and other devices are not available, use a pen to draw the
different lines and shapes in your notebook.

Off You Go. Try making an artwork using a computer program.

Materials Needed:

• Computer, laptop, cellphone or tablet

• Any drawing software that is installed in your computer or your

preferred choice of drawing software

Steps to follow:

1. Using your chosen device, open the drawing software available.

2. Draw inspiration from the various plants and animals in your

surroundings, to draw different shapes and lines.

3. Experiment with different colors as well.

4. Make sure to use the different principles of art like harmony, rhythm,
contrast, and emphasis using the tools available in your software.

5. Give a title for your work.

D.Assimilation Remember:

• People can create artworks with the computer.

• Digital art is a general term for a wide variety of artistic works and
methods that use digital technology.

• Lines, shapes, colors and textures are elements common to both

traditional handmade art and modern digital art.

• The principles of art, rhythm, harmony, contrast and emphasis apply

even with the use of technology.
Self- Assessment

2. What did I learn?

3. What did I find interesting about the art?

4. What questions do I have about what I learned?

5. What was the point of today’s lesson?

Ask: How was your experience in creating an artwork using drawing

software? How does it compare with the traditional way of drawing with
the use of paper and pencil?

IV. PROCEDURES

A. Introduction

In this lesson, you will be able to demonstrate understanding of shapes,

space, colors, and the principle of emphasis, harmony and contrast in
digital painting and poster design using new technologies.

Have you wondered just what digital paintings are?

B. Development

Look at the two pictures, can you tell which one was painted digitally?
How were you able to tell the difference?
A B

One of them is the oil canvas painting (self-portrait) by the greatest

impressionist Vincent van Gogh. The other one is its version , a state of
the art digital painting , by Tadao Cern. Unlike Van Gogh , Tadao uses
the computer as a means to express himself artistically.

What is Digital Painting?

Digital painting - is an emerging art form in which traditional painting

techniques (such as water color, oils, impasto, etc.) are applied by means
of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software.

Painting has changed in the last few decades, thanks to the power and
creative ability of computers. Computers can make just about a very
aspect of paintings easier.
Look at the sample digital paintings below.

What are the elements and principles applied in the painting above?

Advantages of using Computers in Painting:

• Errors can easily be corrected.

• Work is done in an organized, no –mess environment.

• Colors do not fade and brushes are never worn out.

• Stages and version(s) of the art work can be saved, filed, and easily
retrieved.

• Work can be transferred or printed on almost any media.

• Work can be formatted and easily e-mailed to interested parties.

Look at the sample painting below.

C. Engagement

Questions:

1. What are the elements of art used in digital painting above?

2. What are the three perspectives in the painting? ( foreground, middle,

background)

3. In the principles of art above, what is given an emphasis?

4. Is there a balance in the picture?

5. What can you say to the pictures?

6. How do you feel looking at the digital art?

How do you prepare and go digital in painting?

● Develop some familiarity with the painting styles and

techniques you want to be inspired with.

● Understand how the elements and principles of artwork on

designs.

● Set you equipment tools (computer, scanner, digital tablet)

D. Assimilation In our lesson, what have you realize in creating a digital painting, or
even with the use of technologies?

(Answer: I realized that art processes, elements and principles of

painting is still applicable even with the use of technologies.)

Directions: Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is

wrong.

1. Using of elements and principles of art still apply even with the use of
technologies.
2. Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting
techniques (such as water color, oils, impasto, etc.) are applied by means
of a computer.

3. Digital painting is good because errors can easily be corrected and

colors do not fade and brushes are never worn out.

4. Balance and texture is not applicable in digital painting because you

cannot control it if you are using computer.

These tools help you paint and draw using the computer. You use the
mouse to control the tools.
● What software tools are used in Digital Painting?

1. The Brush Tool- This tool applies color to your work, similar to the
way a traditional paint brush would apply paint on a canvas or paper.
The edges of the lines created when using the brush tend to be slightly
softer than that the other tools, mimicking a real brush.

2. Burn tool: This tool darkens an image. To use this tool, just drag the
icon over the image.

3. Dodge Tool: lightens an image .To use , drag the icon over the image
you want to lighten.

4. Eraser Tool: Not all is perfect for beginning digital artists. Click on
the tool bar icon that looks like an eraser. Doing so changes your cursor
into an eraser.

5. Gradient tool: Use this tool by dragging the pen to highlight a color
and make it fade from dark to light.

6. Hand tool: This tool moves around an image within an object .Use
this with a zoom tool when you want to adjust the section of the picture
you want to look at.

7. Paint Bucket tool: This tool fills or makes an area one color. Can be
used also to fill or change the color of the design.

8. Pencil tool: behaves much like the brush except that it has hard edges.

9. Pen Tool: makes lines and can be used to create different shapes.

10. Sponge tool: soaks color out of the image. Use this tool by dragging
the tool over the section of the image you want to change.

11. Type Tool: This tool places text in a picture.

C. Engagement What are digital brushes?

Brushes are at the heart of all painting software programs. They are
of central importance to the techniques needed to make the
characteristics that you like to have in your work.

What brushes should you use? How are brushes selected and changed in
digital painting?

You can make your mark by choosing brushes and using a variety of
strokes (Brush Dynamics) that you like. You can even customize or
make your own brushes in digital painting.
