Advantages and Disadvantages of Materials
Advantages and Disadvantages of Materials
1.Research and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of material.
Metallic Materials
Advantages
- Extremely good conductor of electricity and heat
- Higher melting point
- Ductile or resistant to fracture
- Not transparent to visible light
- Stiff and strong
Disadvantages
- Susceptibility to corrosion
- Expensive compared to other materials
Polymeric Materials
Advantages
- Ductile and pliable
- More transparent or translucent
- Stiffness and strength on per-mass basis is comparable to metals and ceramic
Disadvantages
- Soften/decompose at modest to high temperature
- Poor conductor of electricity and heat\
- Non-magnetic
- Non-renewable
Ceramic Materials
Advantages
- Extreme hardness (difficult to break)
- High temperature resistant
- Good insulative property
- Stiff and strong (comparable to metal)
Disadvantages
- Susceptibility to corrosion
- Lack of ductility (brittleness)
Composite Materials
Advantages
- High strength-to-weight ratio
- Excellent resistance to corrosion and weathering
- Does not dissolve with each other
- Lightweight
- Flexible
- Durable
Disadvantages
- Brittle and easily damaged compared to other material
- More difficult to repair
- High raw material cost
Electronic Materials
Advantages
- smaller in size and possess less weight
- excellent compliance and toughness
Disadvantages
- Have higher sensitivity
Biomaterials
Advantages
- They have shape memory and can be sterilized easily before use
- biodegradable
- Strong and chemically inert
- Have high compressive strength
Disadvantages
- They can leach, leading to wear and tear
- Some biomaterials are expensive
