1 Product Overview
V8240 is a 7RU height chassis G-PON Optical Line Termination (OLT) supporting 40-Port
G-PON interfaces as well as a Layer 3 switch of supporting 240-Port CSFP Gigabit Ether-
net service. It terminates the traffic coming from the subscriber lines and consolidates it on
one or more Gigabit Ethernet interfaces towards the metropolitan area.
V8240 is comprised of 14 slots for 10 service modular units, two uplink modular units, two
switching fabric units to deliver a wide range of full-featured and high-performance over
FTTx applications. It is a high-density chassis system that supports up to 2,560 residential
and business subscribers (ONTs) with 40 G-PON ports (1:64 split ratio). It also provides
simultaneous services of G-PON and Gigabit Ethernet. The V8240 features flexible and
high capacity G-PON access and 10GbE uplinks, scalability and line rate performance with
a 296Gbps non-blocked switch fabric.
The PON technology adds new features and functionality targeted at improving perfor-
mance and interoperability, and adds support for new applications, services, and deploy-
ment scenarios. Among these changes are improvements in data rate and reach perfor-
mance, diagnostics, and stand-by mode, to name a few.
The V8240 introduces a point-to-multipoint concept with the PON technology, which ena-
bles a cost-effective FTTx service. The reason why PON is considered as a cost-effective
solution is its usage of a passive splitter rather than an active switching system.

With dual interface units, V8240 features power, uplink, G-PON service and switching fabric
redundancy, so stable operation could be achieved from sudden network failure.
The SIU, the subscriber interface unit, is used for service interfaces. Up to 10 slots of the
shelf can be equipped with SIU per slot. There are three types of SIU. You can select
SIU_GE24 (24-Port of 1000Base-BX interfaces), SIU_GE4 (4-Port of 100/1000Base-X in-
terfaces) or SIU_GPON4 (4-Port of G-PON interfaces) or SIU_GPON4R (4-Port of G-PON
interface supporting fiber redundancy) per service module.

The NIUs can be used as uplink towards the core network or they can be used either to
cascade other switches or to connect to a collocated DSLAM. Dual NIUs could be mounted
into the front slots of the shelf. Each NIU_10GE2+ has 2-Port of 10GbE interface (XFP) and
4-Port of 100/1000Base-X (SFP).
Figure 7 NIU_10GE2+
The following interface unit is used as the uplink interface of the V8240:
• NIU_10GE2+ contains two XFP module interface providing optical 10GbE uplink and
four ports of GE uplink interfaces
– 2 x 10GbE XFP interfaces IEEE 802.3ae compliant
– 4 x 100/1000Base-X interfaces IEEE 802.3z compliant (Refer to Table 7)
The SFU, the switching fabric unit, plays the important role of switching the traffic and man-
aging all components. The SFU processes the incoming traffic and forwards them to the
proper interfaces via the main switching fabric. It also contains the visible alarm indicator,
RS232 console access, and the out-of-band management interface to manage the system
on the front panel of the SFU.
The power supplied to the shelf is regulated first through the PSU. For redundant power
supply, the second PSU has to be used.
The power regulated by the PSU is then supplied to the plug-in units through the backplane.
The V8240 has a semi-decentralized power supply concept. DC/DC converters on the indi-
vidual plug-in units convert the once-regulated input power to the proper voltages again. All
plug-in units are hot-swappable.

The V8240’s external AC power supply chassis (2RU) is a rack-mounted, external power
source that provides native DC power to the V8240 DC power supply when operating in an
AC power environment.
When using external AC power chassis, the DC output on the front panel of PSU_AC unit
will be connected to the PSU_DC in the V8240 shelf.
FAN Unit
The V8240 provides 1 slot for fan unit on the front panel. It is located at the left ends. This
plug-in unit internally consists of 6 fans. User can insert fan unit to a slot by slowly adjusting
it to fit into the slot guidance. The air flows from the right side inlet to the left side outlet.

For G-PON, the PON layer is terminated on the interface unit and translated to Ethernet up-
link to be transported through an Ethernet/IP environment. The V8240 can be equipped with
up to 10 Subscriber Interface Units (SIUs). For improved system reliability, it adopts the de-
sign of a full redundancy architecture with dual PSUs and SFUs
When dual SFUs are used, the system decides the running mode of SFUs between active
and standby. The above system architecture illustrates SFU redundancy scheme used for
the V8240.
Active SFU is internally linked to all subscriber interface units (SIUs) and network interface
units (NIUs). They receive traffic from IUs and update their own Forwarding Database
(FDB) in the same manner so that they can keep identical data to make a forwarding deci-
sion. Active SFU can send traffic back to the IUs and receive traffic from the IUs for address
learning.
The power feeding of the V8240 is provided by Power Supply Unit (PSU). Dual PSUs can
be installed to guarantee constant system running. In terms of hardware architecture, the
V8240 has two slots for PSUs; the active/active resilient architecture with dual redundant
power supplies provides extremely high redundancy for non-stop operations.

V8240
The V8240 is a network element, which includes the necessary service adaptation functions
to support the delivery of all types multiple services, such as Ethernet, IP telephony, and
video services.
The V8240 G-PON OLT system is one element of this end-to-end solution, however Dasan
Networks is able to provide the complete next generation broadband access network and
video integration solution, where full interoperability is ensured. Up to 64 (max.128) termina-
tion points for G-PON can be attached to an OLT via passive optical splitter.
There are different possible deployment topologies for G-PON networks, which differentiate
from each other basically from the place the optical fiber is terminated. Depending on the
subscriber type and desired topology to the network, the operator may adopt: FTTH (fiber to
the Home), FTTB (fiber to the Building), FTTN (fiber to the neighborhood) or FTTC (fiber to
the Curb). In case of very high bandwidth requirement per user, scenarios without splitters
offering 2.5Gbps/1.25Gbps (downstream/upstream) data rate can also be deployed by con-
necting only the single user on a G-PON port.

G-PON system of V8240 provides the network services at no extra cost, while EPON sys-
tems require additional adaptation equipment for TDM. It also offers much more available
bandwidth for the entire range of applications. The V8240 introduces a point-to-multipoint
concept with the several G-PON mechanisms, which enable the efficient and flexible FTTx
services.
OMCI, an ONT management and control interface protocol defined in ITU-T G.984.4, speci-
fies the format of interactive messages, and the mechanism of information exchange be-
tween an OLT and ONT. Based on the OMCI protocol, G-PON terminal management ena-
bles an OAM service to provide a standard way to discover ONT capabilities, and to man-
age and control them. OMCI operates on a dedicated bidirectional Port-ID between the
management station and the ONT. In addition, OMCI subdivides the ONT service module,
and defines a series of management entities used for service description.
The V8240 manages and configures various G-PON terminals such as ONTs and MDUs (or
ONUs) through the OMCI protocol. It provides MIB access that replicates the OLT infor-
mation database and connected ONTs. The management information from/to OLT and con-
nected ONTs flow is exchanged via an OMCI channel. Besides the OMCI, G-PON provides
Page 15 of 28
Data Sheet
V8240
a low level communication channel to manage physical level issues and the G-PON link
layer (GTC). The ONTs send upstream a PLOAM message with the serial number of the
ONT. Both PLOAM and OMCI channel provide full control of the optical network and the
management of the customers’ ONTs.
G-PON Encapsulation Method (GEM) is a scheme of encapsulating user frame data for
transport of the G-PON network. Although any type of data can be encapsulated, actual
types depend on service situation. The GEM protocol is used to provide delineation of the
user data frames inside the G-PON partitions and the port identification for multiplexing. It
can also permit fragmentation of frames over partition boundaries.
QoS schemes in a G-PON network, ONT plays a key role in ensuring QoS for all traffic be-
cause it is the ingress/egress point for all network traffic. The ONT can have different types
of service ports, including one or more analog voice ports and one or more Ethernet ports. It
can also perform service classification based on the physical port and map it to 802.1p p-
bits. Traffic flows from voice ports, for example, can be classified as highest priority.
As part of this service differentiation, the ONT associates different traffic flows with a specif-
ic G-PON Encapsulation Method (GEM) Port ID. Each physical port in a given ONT can
have a maximum of eight GEM-ports. 802.1p allows a maximum of eight classes of service
(CoS) based on p-bit marking. The GEM-Port IDs and the p-bit marking together define a
specific service. Traffic from each physical port can be queued into up to eight separate
queues after traffic flow classification. Traffic scheduling is done to serve these queues
based on their priority levels.
In the upstream direction, the traffic is classified at the ONT and then mapped into one out
off 4 T-CONT types supported. All the traffic flows from the ONTs identified by their GEM-
Port IDs.
The V8240 supports for both NSR and SR DBA (G.984.3), piggy-back DBRu report mode 0,
including concurrent support for DBR mode 0 and “idle GEM” mode.
Through Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA), a PON can be oversubscribed for upstream
traffic. In G-PON, DBA algorithms are based on two kinds of information: Non Status Re-
porting (NSR) and Status Reporting (SR).

2.2 Redundancy
The key features of V8240 are its flexibility and extremely high reliability that result from the
redundancy design concept. V8240 meets carrier’s requirements, which is a substantial fac-
tor for aggregation switches to perform traffic forwarding to core network without a failure. It
provides equipment-level reliability including Switching Fabric Unit (SFU), Network Interface
Unit (NIU), PON and power redundancy.
There are two slots for SFUs in the V8240 base chassis. A redundant SFU could be
equipped into either slot. This switch can perform normal switching operation with a single
SFU, but also can accommodate dual SFUs to ensure stable operation.
When dual SFUs are used, the system decides the running mode of SFUs between active
and standby. The first inserted and booted SFU runs in active mode and the other SFU that
follows runs in standby mode.
The following diagram illustrates SFU redundancy scheme used for V8240.

Both SFUs are internally linked to SIUs and NIUs. They receive traffic from IUs and update
their own Forwarding Database (FDB) in the same manner so that they can keep identical
data to make a forwarding decision. However, only the active SFU can send traffic back to
the IUs; the standby SFU can just receive traffic for address learning.
In a redundancy scenario, only the active SFU is working in the system and contains user
configurations via SNMP or CLI and dynamically-learned state information such as DHCP
snooping, IGMP snooping, L3 protocols, STP states, etc. But the standby SFU does not
have that information. Thus, there is a mechanism to synchronize between the active SFU
and standby SFU. The active SFU periodically sends state information to the standby SFU
through an interlinked 100MB channel.
Software or hardware failure and accident can cause an automatic switchover from active
SFU to standby SFU. Also, a static switchover by network operator could be made due to
software upgrade, equipment exchange, or network construction. If the switchover happens,
the standby SFU can start working without a service break.
The power feeding of the V8240 is provided by Power Supply Unit (PSU). Dual PSUs can
be installed to guarantee constant system running.
PSUs provide the stable and proper voltages to the system with the redundant and load-
balanced power processing. A failure of the feeding line (e.g. due to an external fuse break)
does not cause system breakdown.
G-PON Redundancy
GPON shares one fiber to support up to 64 (max.128) ONTs which in turn accommodates
more subscribers in case of FTTC or FTTB. It means that failure of one GPON port leads to
service interruption of lots of subscribers. G.984.1 says several types of redundancy and
V8240 supports two redundancy solutions.
In redundancy type A, SIU_GPON4R is equipped into the one of SIU slots, each
SIU_GPON4R is comprised of physical 8 GPON ports. A single GPON interface apparatus
includes first (port A) and second (port B) ports, which one is in active mode the other is in
standby mode ready to become active in the event of failure of the active port.
The method of V8240 GPON redundancy is that active/standby modes are implemented on
a per port basis. A pair of GPON ports on the SIU_GPON4R unit forms a redundant inter-
face that only one port should be operated in active and the other port in standby.
SIU_GPON4R provides the path redundancy between the OLT and the first splitting node.
Data Sheet
V8240
In redundancy type B allows GPON redundancy by port basis, port redundancy can be con-
figured between port #A and port #B within the same line card or different line card. It also
allows redundancy by card basis, GPON redundancy can be configured between slot 1 and
2, slot 3 and 4 within the same chassis.
The 2:N splitter is utilized to make redundant fiber path from OLT to the first splitter. The dif-
ferent GPON OLT MACs are attached to each fiber; one is configured as active and the
other is configured as standby. When switch-over condition happens over active link, OLT
changes standby link to active.

3 Software Overview
The SFU also includes advanced QoS features for service provider applications with a new
dynamic adaptive memory buffer technology that provides better QoS and network perfor-
mance. It also features large external address and security tables that scale to meet the
demands of high performance equipment at the core of the network.
For service providers, our software architecture facilitates a converged network by collaps-
ing voice, video and data onto a single IP backbone that supports both wired and wireless
connectivity.
Advanced Security
V8240 supports a comprehensive set of security features for connectivity and access
control, including RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service), TACACS+
(Terminal Access Control System), IEEE 802.1x and others. It also supports SSH (Se-
cure Shell) protocol for secure remote network management.
System management and configuration can be performed by connecting to the serial port
on the SFU to create a console session. Or, out of band management can be set up by
connecting to the MGMT port, which is through SNMP or Telnet.

The system LEDs are mounted to the SFU. The LED indicates the operating status of the
system, SFU, power and alarms. User can easily monitor and see the system status with
LED lights.
Switching Board
Controller Board
The SFU contains the central controller function for all interface units in the shelf and for the
configuration and control of the SFU on-board components.
The SFU controller board provides the internal communication to all interface units in the
shelf. The system internal communication is implemented as inband communication over
the internal FE interface.
The fan operation is controlled depending on measurement results of the shelf temperature.
