K. Sivan is a former Chairperson of ISRO who is known for developing India's cryogenic engine. He discusses in the interview how ISRO conceived its EDUSAT program to provide educational opportunities to rural students using communication satellites. ISRO also encourages students to build micro and nano satellites to inspire the next generation of space scientists. Though K. Sivan did not have dreams of becoming a space scientist as a child, the encouragement of his professor inspired him to pursue rocket science at ISRO. INTERVIEW WITH K.

SIVAN ( ISRO )

Here, we have Dr. Kailasavadivoo Sivan, an Indian space Scientist and the former Chairperson of Indian
Space Research Organization. He is best known for the development of Cryogenic engine for India’s
space programme.

Here we go with into the interview.

Interviewer : Good morning sir!

K. Sivan: Good morning!

Interviewer : ISRO is always been a part of tele-education. EDUSAT was one of the pioneering
programme. How was it conceived sir?

K. Sivan : The EDUSAT programme was conceived based on the rich experience we gained in utilising
communication satellites for telecommunications and TV broadcasting. During this programme, GSAT –
3 or EDUSAT, a dedicated satellite for the educational field, was launched by our GSLV, mainly intended
for the semi-urban and rural students.

Interviewer : That’s really a great initiative sir. Along with this ISRO is very particular about encouraging
student community in developing satellites. How’s the present scenario sir?

K. Sivan : To enthuse the large student community in our community, the strength of our nation. ISRO
has encouraged them to build micro and nano satellites and has launched them in our trusted space
horse PSLV. Till now, Ten student satellites have been launched successfully.

Interviewer : How did you choose this Field of Space technology sir?

K. Sivan : Actually, When I was doing my masters in aerospace engineering, we were supposed to pick a
subject of interest in the space area. My professor S K Srivastava at IISc inspired me to work on rocket
science. Due to his encouragement, I later joined Isro and rocket became my area of specialisation.

Interviewer : Is it your childhood desire to become a space Scientist sir?

K. Sivan : When I was studying in a government primary school, we didn’t have any big dream like this.
While people used to say that I have a dream to become a scientist like that, at that time, the main aim
is to get food for our stomachs. So for that, we had to work in the farms while school was secondary. At
the same time, when I was growing up my aim was to become a teacher or bank employee like that.

Interviewer : Life always drives us to different places rather our dreams. What is your dream about
future missions of isro sir?

K. Sivan : One dream I have is that we should put a man safely into orbit and bring him back safely to
earth. This is one vision I have.

Interviewer : May your dream come true sir! Now we’ll jump into the second part of the interview sir.
It’s rapid fire. I have several questions for you. You can give answer as yes or no.

Have you ever worried for your failures?

K. Sivan : No. There is no failure in science. Only experiments.

Interviewer : Do you love you profession?

K. Sivan : Yes! Very much.

Interviewer : Is K. Sivan a topper in school?

K. Sivan : Yes I am! From school to college.

Interviewer : Have you ever met an extraordinary person in your life?

K. Sivan : yes! It’s A. P. J. Abdul Kalam sir.

Interviewer : that’s relly great sir! Now we’ll move on to the final part of the interview, Picture talk. I’ll
show a couple of picture and you can share your thoughts about it.

1)

K. Sivan : When the land test was not successful, all of us were affected, making our hearts heavy. In the
morning, when the Prime Minister was leaving our centre after addressing the Indian community, I
conveyed how I was extremely sorry for not making it. When I was telling him this, I was emotionally
exploding. And seeing me explode, he really hugged me and he said nothing,”

2)

K. Sivan : This was really a overwhelming moment for me. I’ve never thought of receiving such
prestigious award. I’m really thankful for the ones who supported me to reach this place.
