Chapter-3 Revised

The chapter outlines the research design and methodology used in the study. It describes the descriptive-qualitative method used to collect data through interviews and observations. Rapid Application Development (RAD) was used as the software development methodology to develop the system through iterative prototyping. Primary and secondary sources were used to collect the necessary data, including interviews and reviewing literature. The system requirements for the file repository system are also provided.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN

This chapter presents the methods and procedures used in this study. It

includes the sources of data, data gathering procedures, software development

methodology, and the system requirements of the study.

Research Method
Descriptive-Qualitative method is gathered from a variety of sources by using

different methods such as interviews and observations. This method often involves

simply interviewing and observing to collect more data. Observation is a systematic data

collection approach. (Tungol, n.d.). The interview conducted by the researchers in this

method is a conversation where questions are asked to get the information needed.

The researchers conducted descriptive method to collect as much data to capture

all the procedures in the office. This method can gather all the information that the

researchers need to be inserted in the proposed system. It helps the researchers to know

the flow or processes inside the office of College Student Affairs Coordinator.

Researchers uses Rapid Application of programming Development model that

was adopted for the design and development of File Repository System for CSAC. Rapid

Application Development is an approach to building computer systems which combines

Computer-Assisted Software Engineering (CASE) tools and techniques, user-driven

prototyping, and stringent project delivery time limits into a potent, tested, reliable

formula for top-notch quality and productivity. RAD drastically raises the quality of

finished systems while reducing the time it takes to build them (Kettemborough, 2012).
16

Sources of Data

For the researchers to achieve the proposed system the researchers will use

primary and secondary data collection. The primary sources came from the interview

from the internet it gave us prior knowledge to create a repository system and the

secondary data that we have gathered from the articles, books and journals within the

internet.

Data Gathering Procedures

In creating the project proposal and developing the proposed system, the

researchers used different techniques and methods to gather every possible data that the

researchers needs in gaining knowledge and better understanding for the system

development, the researchers tend to use content-analysis and consult on the related

literature and studies in creating repository systems that will help the researchers in the

development of File Repository System for College Student Affairs Coordinator, the

researchers conducted internet researches as data gathering tools to identify the basic

requirements in the development of the proposed system.

Observation. Observed data can include information gathered using all the senses

available to the researcher, including sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Observation is

a method of data collection in which researchers observe within a specific research field.

It is sometimes referred to as an unobtrusive method. Participant observation involves the

observer being a member of the setting in which they are collecting data.

Interview. Interviewing is a technique that is primarily used to gain an

17

understanding of the underlying reasons and motivations for people’s attitudes,

preferences, or behavior. Interviews can be undertaken on a personal one-to-one basis or

in a group. The researchers interviewed certain people within the scope of the study and

asked several people of the internet that conducted identical to the proposed study.

documentary materials such as books, magazines, newspapers and the contents
of all other verbal materials which can be either spoken or printed.

Software Development Methodology

The researchers used Rapid Application Development (RAD) by Shelly and

Rosenblatt as a methodology that focuses on developing applications rapidly through

frequent iterations and gathering information requirements for the developments of the

proposed system and developmental method helps in assessing the flow of the study. The

RAD is one of the software development methodology that uses minimal planning in

favor of rapid prototyping.  In software development, a prototype is a rudimentary

18

working model of a product or information system, usually built for demonstration

purposes or as part of the development process. (Learn SDLC, 2017)

In the development method, the researchers will develop a system that will help

the College Student Affairs Coordinator of Bicol University Polangui Campus.

The researchers are determined about the initial or basic requirements of the

proposed system, by researching for these problems through internet and by observing

and with the use of interviews within the scope of the study on what are the problems that

they encounter within the office and after identifying the problems that the existing

studies have, the researchers will collect the information that we gather within that time

and will begin the development of the proposed system.

Phase1: Requirements planning. During this stage the researchers conducted

observation on how the CSAC office handle the difficulties in file management to

understand how the process of the CSAC office works and the researchers analyze what

are the requirements needed in order to develop the proposed study.

Phase 2: User design: User feedback is gathered with heavy emphasis on

determining the system architecture. This allows initial modeling and prototypes to be

created. This step is repeated as often as necessary as the project evolves.

Phase 3: Construction: Along with the user design, the construction phase was

repeated as necessarily as new components were required to meet the needs of the

user/s, in this phase the researchers will use MySQL for the database, and XAMPP for

the server for the dynamic web pages and Cascading style sheets and sublime for text

editing.
19

Phase 4: Cutover: The final Cutover (or Transition) stage allows the development

team time to move components to a live production environment, where any necessary

full-scale testing or team training can take place. In the last phase of RAD all the final

changes in the system were made while the researchers continue to look for errors and

bugs to fix them. For the features of the system functions and interface will meet the

requirements needed by the user within the office.

obtain system efficiency and reliability.

These software tools will be used to develop the design and will the help the

researchers in creating the screen forms as well as the database and server of the

PHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a

widely used open source general-purpose scripting language that is
especially suited for web development and can be embedded into
HTML.
XAMPP XAMPP is an open-source software developed by Apache Friends.
XAMPP software package contains Apache distributions for Apache
v3.2.4 server, MariaDB, PHP, and Perl. And it is basically localhost or a
local server. This local server works on your own desktop or laptop
computer. The use of XAMPP is to test the clients or your website
before uploading it to the remote web server. This XAMPP server
software gives you the suitable environment for testing MYSQL,
PHP, Apache, and Perl projects on the local computer.

HTML5  is a programming language whose acronym stands for Hyper Text
Markup Language. It is a system that allows the modification of the
appearance of web pages, as well as making adjustments to their
appearance. It also used to structure and present content for the web
Sublime Sublime Text editor is a sophisticated text editor which is widely
used among developers. It includes wide features such as Syntax
Highlight, Auto Indentation, File Type Recognition, Sidebar, Macros,
Plug-in and Packages that make it easy for working with code base.
CSS used to format the layout of Web pages. They can be used to define
text styles, table sizes, and other aspects of Web pages that
previously could only be defined in a page's HTML.
MySQL MySQL pronounced either "My S-Q-L" or "My Sequel," is an open
source relational database management system. It is based on the
structure query language (SQL), which is used for adding, removing,
and modifying information in the database. Standard SQL

commands, such as ADD, DROP, INSERT, and UPDATE can be

used with MySQL.
Web Browser A web browser, or simply "browser," is an application used to access
and view websites. Common web browsers include Microsoft
Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple
Safari.
