Structure and Function of Cells

The document outlines an anatomy and physiology laboratory activity on the structure and function of cells. The activity objectives are to familiarize students with cell structures, functions of cell parts, and cell division. Students will observe cheek cells under the microscope, identify structures like the nucleus and mitochondria, and describe their functions. They will also draw and label animal cell phases, different cell types, and answer research questions on topics like mitosis, cancer pathology, and osmosis.

LABORATORY

ACTIVITY # 04
THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF CELLS

I. OBJECTIVES:

1. To become familiar with the structures of cells

2. To learn selected functions of cells and their parts
3. To observe cell division in animal cell

II. MATERIALS

Microscope, tongue depressor, different slides on types of cells, plain slides, methylene blue
stain, slides on mitosis

III. PROCEDURE

1. Scrape off some squamous cells from the inner lining of your cheek. Place this on the clean slides
and add drops off water. Focus under LPO, and then shift to HPO. If there is a difficulty in
viewing the cells, add few drops of methylene blue solution.
2. Give the primary function of each of the following structures by using your text and/or other
references:
A. Nucleus
