3.2.2.2 IF Interface
The rear IF input/output (I/O) panel features an L-Band IF input and output for each of five
individual HLC groups. Each group can include up to 4 Hub Line Cards. Typically the line
cards in each group share the same Start-of Frame (SOF) timing. For example, group A
includes Hub Line Cards 1 through 4. The Tx outputs of the line cards in the group are
combined via the front-side Tx patch panel and internal combiner into a single IF output that
appears on the A Tx connector. Signals input to the A Rx connector are distributed via the
internal divider and front-side Rx patch panel to the Rx inputs of each line card in the group.
See Figure 3-6.
Starting with iDX Release 3.2, synchronization is based upon 1 PPS signals provided by the
RCM-PPS (See Section 5.3, Reference Clock Modules on page 33). The RCM-PPS is required for
operation with iDX 3.2 and above.
The RCM-PPS provides backwards compatibility for systems running iDX Release 3.1.x and
below. The concept of timing groups is still applicable.

The 15100 Series Hub is capable of operating with one Hub Line Card, or up to twenty line
cards. At a minimum, a Hub Line Card Kit contains:
• 1 Hub Line Card
• 2 Coaxial Patch Cables
• 1 LAN Patch Cable
NOTE: Based on the network configuration and service contract, the quantity of
Hub Line Card(s) received may vary.
For the Network Operator using multiple Hub Line Cards for a single network (for example,
configured as one downstream line card and multiple upstream line cards), it is recommended
that the slots are chosen in modulo 4 groupings. The slots in the chassis are designed to share
Start of Frame (SOF) synchronization timing in groups of four slots each. Each group of four
slots can be synchronized to the adjacent group of four under Network Management System
(NMS) control.
1 Grounding wrist strap with alligator clip Connect to the ground post
NOTE: To ensure proper airflow and EMI shielding, do not remove more blank
panels than required.
2. Ground the anti-static wrist strap by attaching the alligator clip to the wrist-strap
grounding stud inside the line card compartment as shown in Figure 6-20 on page 41.
3. Take the Hub Line Card out of the protective anti-static bag.
4. Remove the 75 ohm terminators, shown in Figure 6-21, from the F-Type Female
connectors on the Rx patch panel ports located beneath each slot where a line card is to
be installed.
5. Using the eject handles on the Hub Line Card, align the card top and bottom edges with
the slot guide rails. Insert the card, but do not push the card all the way into the chassis
backplane connector at this time.
WARNING: Damage to the Hub Line Card may result if the Rx coax patch cable is
NOT connected between the "Rx In” port of the line card and the Rx Patch Panel
prior to seating the line card into the backplane. Connecting the cable provides
additional grounding to the line card to minimize "ground bounce" during the line
card seating process and power-up.
5. Apply firm pressure on the faceplate of the line card to seat the line card into the
backplane as shown in Figure 6-22.
NOTE: Ensure that each module is seated properly by providing firm, but not
excessive, force on the line card. Do not ram the line card into the backplane.
6. Using a small flat-blade screwdriver, tighten the small faceplate hold-down screws at the
top and bottom of the line card faceplate. Do not over tighten.
WARNING: Do not connect the Tx coaxial patch cable to the Tx patch panel if the
line card has not been configured. Inadvertent transmission to the satellite may
occur.
• Verify that all Accessory Modules are securely inserted in the slots
• Verify that all LAN cables are connected to the appropriate Protocol Processor and the
LAN Switch/Hub
• Verify that the Protocol Processor is booted and the NMS is running
• Confirm that a PC or laptop (with a NIC card) is available, and that the iSite software is
loaded
At this point, the Hub Line Card is ready to be configured using iBuilder. Refer to the
appropriate iDX Release of the iBuilder User Guide at this time for complete details about
configuring and commissioning a new line card.
CAUTION: Before proceeding, confirm that no cables are connected to the Tx, Rx,
or Monitor ports on the rear of the chassis.
The initial LED state could be different for each line card if there are multiple line cards with
different configurations. However, the STATUS LED should always be green. A red STATUS LED
indicates a malfunction of the line card.

This chapter contains the following sections
• Section 8.1, Maintaining the Chassis on page 51
• Section 8.2, FRUs on page 52
• Section 8.3, Replacements on page 52
8.2 FRUs
Because the iDirect 15100 Series is designed with modular serviceability in mind, a number of
components are considered to be Field Replaceable Units (FRU). The units may be replaced in
the field by the user without the assistance of specialized service personnel. The FRUs of the
iDirect 15100 Series include the following:
• Fan Modules
• Power Supply Modules
• Reference Clock Modules
• Fan Status Module
• MIDAS Board
• Hub Line Cards
Of these, the fan, power supply, and clock modules are “hot-swappable”, meaning that they
may be replaced without removing power from the 15100 Series Hub.
The Hub Line Cards may be replaced without removing power from the 15100 Series Hub, but
are not considered to be “hot-swappable” in the same sense as the modules above. Power to
a failed HLC slot must be disabled via the iBuilder application before inserting a new line
card. The feature permits replacement of a failed HLC without de-energizing the entire 15100
Series Hub.
Replacement of the Fan Status Module or MIDAS Board requires that the chassis be completely
de-energized.
8.3 Replacements
This section describes replacement procedures for each FRU of the iDirect 15100 Series.
2. If the unit does not respond to the Fan Alarm Reset button, loosen the four fixing screws
on the failed Fan Module.
3. Slide the failed Fan Module out of its mounting bay by providing a firm but not excessive
pull on the extraction handle.
4. Slide the new Fan Module into the empty module bay. Ensure the module is seated
properly by providing a firm but not excessive push on or near the extraction handle.
5. Momentarily press the Fan Alarm Reset button.
6. Verify that the fan status LED changes from red to green. Also, check for abnormal fan
noise or fan blade rotation.
7. Secure the module in the bay by tightening the four fixing screws with a medium flat-
blade screwdriver.
The Fan Status Module is seen immediately under the rear access cover. A depiction of the
Fan Status Module is shown in Figure 8-24.
3. Use a #2 Phillips screw driver to remove the four retaining screws. See Figure 8-26 on
page 61.
4. Holding the card by its edges, disconnect the three cables on the right edge of the board
and the two cables on the left edge of the board and remove the board from the chassis.
5. Connect all five cables to the new fan status module. Install the new Fan Status Module
into the chassis and secure with the four retaining screws.
6. Do not reinstall the rear access cover at this time.
2. Using a flat head screw driver, loosen the two captive retaining screws.
3. Holding the board by its edges, pull it from the chassis, leaving the rear cables attached
to the chassis backplane. See Section 8-29, on page 65 (ribbon cables not shown).
2. Disconnect the left-most ribbon cable from the existing board and immediately reconnect
the cable to the same port on the replacement board.
3. For each remaining ribbon cable, disconnect the cable from the existing board and
immediately reconnect it to the same port on the replacement board.
4. Insert the replacement MIDAS board into the hub chassis and secure it with the two
captive retaining screws.
5. Reconnect the four cables to the front of the replacement MIDAS board.
6. If the Fan Status Module was disconnected or repositioned, reconnect the cables and re-
install the FSM. See Section 8.3.4, "Fan Status Module" on page 58.
7. Configure the IP address of the new MIDAS board. See the appropriate iDX Release of the
iBuilder User Guide.
8. Confirm that chassis operation is normal and communications are restored.
9. Re-install the rear access cover.
WARNING: Failure to disable slot power before installing the Hub Line Card may
result in damage to the line card.
3. Use the on-site spares to replace the failed line card. In some instances, spare line cards
are already online in a different card slot as hot-standbys.
4. Disconnect transmit and receive coax cables and LAN patch cables from the failed line
card. Use the F-connector nut driver to loosen the coaxial fittings.
5. Un-seat the failed line card from the backplane by operating the card eject handles.
Remove the line card from the chassis.
6. Insert the replacement line card (refer to the Hub Line Card installation instructions
beginning on page 40).
7. Connect the LAN patch cable. Do not install the transmit coaxial patch cable at this time.
WARNING: Damage to the Hub Line Card may result if the Rx coaxial patch cable
is NOT connected between the "Rx In" port of the line card and the Rx Patch Panel
prior to seating the line card into the backplane. Connecting the cable provides
additional grounding to the line card to minimize "ground bounce" during the line
card seating process and power up.
8. After the line card is properly seated, enable power to the line card via iBuilder.
WARNING: Do not connect the Tx coaxial patch cable to the Tx Patch Panel if the
Hub Line Card is not configured properly. Inadvertent transmission to the satellite
may occur.

equipment.
CAUTION: Never lift the chassis by the Power Supply Module or Fan Module handles.
WARNING: Before working on the chassis equipment, unplug the power cords from the AC
power source.
CAUTION: The chassis is designed for mounting in a 19-inch equipment rack. Prior to
installing accessory modules and Hub Line Cards, it is highly recommended that the empty
chassis be installed in the rack.
CAUTION: A minimum of two people are required to lift the chassis due to its size and
weight.
WARNING: Do not work on the system, or connect or disconnect cables, during periods of
lightning activity.
WARNING: Do not remove any chassis panel other than the hot plug-in access panels. Do
not touch internal power supplies when the power cord is connected.
Observe the following basic guidelines when working with any electrical equipment:
• Before beginning any procedures requiring access to the chassis interior, locate the
emergency power off switch for the room or service circuits.
• Disconnect all power and external cables before installing or removing the chassis.
• Do not work alone when potentially hazardous conditions exist.
• Never assume that power has been disconnected; always check.
• Do not perform any action that creates a potential hazard to personnel or makes the
equipment unsafe. Never install equipment that appears damaged.
• Carefully examine the work area for possible hazards, such as a wet floor, ungrounded
power extension cables, and missing safety grounds.
• Never work on energized circuits while wearing an ESD protection strap.
B.5.1 Ventilation
Slots and openings on the chassis provide ventilation for cooling. To protect the chassis from
overheating, the openings must not be blocked or covered at any time. Do not place the
chassis in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or enclosed rack, unless proper ventilation
is provided or the manufacturer’s instructions have been followed. If there is any dust build
up on the vent openings of the chassis, vacuuming is recommended to remove the particulate
matter and ensure proper airflow.
B.5.2 AC Polarization
The chassis is equipped with AC power cords that fit into the power outlets only one way. Do
not modify the plugs by defeating this feature. If the plug does not fit, contact an electrician
to replace the outlet, or obtain the proper power cord. To prevent electric shock or impaired
performance, do not use the plug with an extension cord or extension outlet.
B.5.4 Overloading
Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this can
result in a risk of fire or electrical shock.
B.5.7 Lightning
For added protection, unplug the product from the wall outlet (and disconnect the antenna
and cable system) during a lightning storm, or when left unattended and unused for long
periods. Doing so prevents damage to the product from lightning and power-line surges.
B.5.8 Heat
Do not place the chassis near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other
products (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
B.5.9 Accessories
To avoid personal injury or damage to the chassis, do not place the unit on any unstable rack,
cart, stand, table, or bracket. Mounting of the product must be performed according to the
manufacturer’s instructions.
B.5.10 Attachments
Do not use attachments unless recommended by the manufacturer, as they may cause hazards
or damage to equipment.
B.5.12 Grounding
Never defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment in the absence of a suitably
installed ground conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an
electrician if uncertain that suitable grounding is available.
B.7 Service
Do not attempt to service the internal assemblies. Opening and removing service covers may
expose dangerous voltages or other hazards. There are no user serviceable parts inside.
Opening the service covers voids the warranty. Refer all servicing to qualified service
personnel.
WARNING: Two people are required to lift the chassis. To prevent injury,
keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back.

This appendix describes the cable preparation details and has these sections:
• Section C.1, Coax Cable Preparation on page 95
• Section C.2, Ethernet Port Pinouts on page 99
• Section C.3, Console Port Connection on page 99
iDirect recommends that a solid copper center conductor, coaxial cable be used with a
minimum of 60% + 40% braid and double foil shield to connect the equipment, such as:
• RG-6 — 0.04 inch (1 mm), outdoor rated, Quad Shielded, solid bare copper center
conductor, for cable lengths less than or equal to 225 feet (68.5 meters)
• RG-11 — 0.064 inch (1.6 mm), outdoor rated, Quad Shielded, solid bare copper center
conductor, for cable lengths less than or equal to 400 feet (121.9 meters)
Before connecting the cables, connectors on each end must be installed.
The center conductor must be straight and extend 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) beyond the end of the F-
connector, and the connector should be securely crimped to the cable.
NOTE: iDirect does not recommend using RG-59 with solid bare copper center
conductor. RG-6 or RG-11 Quad Shield or other outdoor quality, 75-ohm type of
coax can be used.
If different types of coaxial cable are used other than the recommended quad shield RG-6 or
RG-11, the following problems can occur:
• Co-channel Interference – If signals at the same frequency are carried on long, parallel
runs of coaxial cable (for example, in cable trays, or riser) interference can occur
between the signals
• Higher quality cable helps to prevent this with better shielding
• Co-channel interference causes degradation and higher packet loss rate
NOTE: Excessive DC Resistance – will result in excessive voltage drop across the
IFL cable. Hence, the voltage at the BUC may be too low to operate properly.
NOTE: Section 4.1.2, Tools and Supplies on page 21 lists all of the recommended
tools for terminating coax cables.
WARNING: Wear protective eye wear while cutting cables and terminating
connectors.
WARNING: The center conductor must be straight and cylindrical without any
burrs. Failure to do so can damage the satellite router, BUC, and/or LNB input
connector.
2. Remove the jacket material and foam insulation according to the length defined under
Length A in Table C-1. For RG-6, use a two-step Coax Stripper such as the LC-CST 1257
from Paladin Tools.
4. Fold the braid back over the jacket and trim the braid to the length as defined under
Length C in Table C-1 on page 96 and shown in Figure C-3.
5. Flare the inner, outer braids and the outer foil shield only. Do not flare the inner foil
shield (last foil around dielectric).
6. (If using a coax stripper, skip this step.) Being careful not to cut into the copper of the
center conductor, remove the foil and cut the dielectric to the length shown under
Length B in Table C-1 on page 96. Remove any dielectric residue.
7. If the conductive foil is burred, then smooth out the burr so that the edge (area where the
dielectric material was removed) is smooth and provides a lead-in for the connector
mandrel.
8. Install the RG-6 connector compression sleeve, or mandrel, (top left (A) in Figure C-4 on
page 98) over foil and underneath the braid. A good, weatherproof outdoor connector
mandrel should have a visible O-Ring (bottom right (B) Figure C-4 on page 98).
NOTE: The white colored inner dielectric insulation should be flush with the inner
rear surface of the connector. Refer to the picture on the right (C) in Figure C-4
on page 98 for an RG-6/RG-11 termination.
9. Finish connecting the cable to the connector with the compression tool connector, such as
Holland Compression Tool 1855 as shown in Figure C-5.
10. Inspect and ensure that the copper center conductor only protrudes 1/8 inch (3.2 mm)
nominally beyond the rim of the F-connector. Trim if necessary.
CAUTION: The center conductor length must be a minimum of 1/16 inch (1.6 mm)
to a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) protrusion beyond the rim of the F type
connector. It must be straight and cylindrical without any burrs at the end. Failure
to follow this technique could result in damage to the satellite router, BUC, LNB
connector and/or possible intermittent service.
NOTE: iDirect supplies one 7-foot Category 5 UTP cable to connect the 15100
Series Hub to the LAN hub or switch. If additional cables or different lengths are
needed, they may be bought commercially.
Table C-2 lists the pinouts for the Ethernet ports (labeled LAN 1-8) of the 15100 Series Hub
and the pinout order is shown in Figure C-6.
