1 Introduction

iDirect hub solutions offer an expanding portfolio of configurations supporting a broad range
of requirements and applications. The 15100 Series Hub (“the chassis”) is designed for service
on multiple satellites, providing carrier-class redundancy across each. The 15100 Series Hub is
equipped with five discreet intermediate-frequency (IF) combiner/divider networks for
connection to the teleport radio-frequency (RF) equipment, permitting access to five
satellites from a single chassis.
This chapter contains the following sections:
• Section 1.1, Description on page 1
• Section 1.2, Features on page 2

1.1 Description
The 15100 Series Hub is an 11-rack unit (RU) PCI card-cage and backplane assembly for
hosting of up to 20 iDirect Hub Line Cards (HLC). Accessory modules provide DC power,
cooling, and system timing. The chassis features integral IF and Ethernet patch panels and
HLC status indicators. The 15100 Series Hub supports automatic fail-over redundancy of the
accessory modules and line cards.
The 15100 Series Hub is scalable, supporting multiple inroute networks within the same
chassis. Multiple 15100 Series Hub in a single location can be interfaced to the same Network
Management System (NMS).
The 15100 Series Hub has four internal compartments:
• 2-bay Power Supply Module compartment
• 3-bay Fan Module compartment
• 20-slot Hub Line Card compartment
• Dual Reference Clock Module compartment
The modular 15100 Series Hub system is designed with serviceability in mind. The Power
Supply Modules, Reference Clock Modules, and Fan Modules are hot-swappable Field
Replaceable Units (FRU). The chassis is shipped with all accessory module compartments

2.4 Reference Clock Module
Beginning with iDX Release 3.2, a new RCM must be used to provide the 1 PPS timing signals
required for A-TDMA support. The Reference Clock Module-Pulse Per Second (RCM-PPS)
replaces the RCM and provides both a 10 MHz clock and a 1 PPS signal to the chassis
backplane. The RCM-PPS is backward compatible, and may be used in 15100 Series Hub that
operate with iDX Release 3.1 and below. Chassis operating with iDX Release 3.2 or higher must
use the RCM-PPS.
Specifications for both RCM models are tabulated in the following sections.

2.4.1 RCM: iDX 3.1.x and Below

Specifications of the RCM are defined in Table 2-5:

Table 2-5. RCM Specifications

2.4.2 RCM-PPS: iDX 3.2 and Above

The RCM-PPS provides a 1PPS signal to the 15100 Series Hub backplane in addition to the 10
MHz clock. The RCM-PPS does not incorporate a GPS receiver, but derives a 1PPS signal from
the internal 10 MHz oscillator. An SMA input jack is provided for synchronization to global
1PPS using an external reference source.
The RCM-PPS is designed to replace the RCM in existing systems. See Section 8.3.3, Reference
Clock Moduleson page 54 for detailed procedures to replace the RCM with the RCM-PPS in
systems running iDX Release 3.1.x and lower.
Specifications of the RCM-PPS are defined in Table 2-6 and Table 2-7:

3.2.2.2 IF Interface
The rear IF input/output (I/O) panel features an L-Band IF input and output for each of five
individual HLC groups. Each group can include up to 4 Hub Line Cards. Typically the line
cards in each group share the same Start-of Frame (SOF) timing. For example, group A
includes Hub Line Cards 1 through 4. The Tx outputs of the line cards in the group are
combined via the front-side Tx patch panel and internal combiner into a single IF output that
appears on the A Tx connector. Signals input to the A Rx connector are distributed via the
internal divider and front-side Rx patch panel to the Rx inputs of each line card in the group.
See Figure 3-6.

3.3 IF Configuration
When using multiple TDMA Line Cards in a single network (e.g., one downstream line card and
multiple upstream line cards), iDirect recommends that the slots be used in modulo 4 groups
(Groups A to E).
Figure 3-9 illustrates the routing of HLC IF signals using the combiners and dividers within the
chassis. Groups A through E support four HLCs each. Each group may be connected to a
separate RF chain, enabling operation on multiple satellites, multiple transponders of the
same satellite, or a combination. Insertion loss of each combiner/divider is approximately 9
dB. Insertion loss must be taken into consideration when computing IF power levels. The
internal combiner/divider network may be bypassed by directly connecting the HLC IF
interfaces to the teleport RF equipment if necessary.

Figure 3-9. TDMA Network Line Card Groupings

3.4 Timing Groups

Line cards share Start of Frame (SOF) synchronization in groups of four. Each contiguous four
slot group can be linked to the adjacent group by choice of the configuration in iBuilder.
Figure 3-10 on page 20 illustrates SOF synchronization and timing groups for a Star/Mesh
network.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 19

Figure 3-10. Star/Mesh Network SOF Synchronization

Starting with iDX Release 3.2, synchronization is based upon 1 PPS signals provided by the
RCM-PPS (See Section 5.3, Reference Clock Modules on page 33). The RCM-PPS is required for
operation with iDX 3.2 and above.
The RCM-PPS provides backwards compatibility for systems running iDX Release 3.1.x and
below. The concept of timing groups is still applicable.

4.3 Mounting the 15100 Series Hub

The 15100 Series Hub can only be mounted in a standard 19-inch rack. It can be mounted with
either the front or the rear of the chassis facing the front of the rack.

4.3.1 General Guidelines

When mounting the 15100 Series Hub, follow these guidelines:
• Measure the proposed rack location before mounting the chassis; the chassis requires a
minimum of 11 rack units (18.92 inches or 48.1 cm) vertically and a minimum of 24 inches
in depth, plus additional clearance for cables.
• Do not install the chassis on the floor
• Mount the chassis at the bottom of the rack if it is the only unit in the rack
• When mounting the chassis in a partially filled rack, mount the heaviest components at
the bottom of the rack
• If the rack is provided with stabilizing devices, install the stabilizers before mounting
• Ensure that the room where the chassis operates is adequately ventilated; ambient air
circulation may not cool the chassis to acceptable operating temperatures without
adequate room ventilation; operating temperature limits and other environmental
specifications are listed in Chapter 2, "Specifications" on page 5
• If the chassis is mounted in an enclosed rack, ensure that the rack has adequate
ventilation; an enclosed rack should have louvered sides and top with fans to provide
positive air circulation

WARNING: The chassis weight exceeds 110 pounds when fully populated. Install
the chassis in the rack before populating with accessory modules and line cards.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 27

WARNING: Install the chassis in a location where access to plug-ins is
unobstructed. The fan air intake or exhaust must not be obstructed at any time.
The louvered openings of the enclosure must not be blocked. Failure to follow this
warning will result in performance degradation or damage due to overheating.

WARNING: To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing the chassis in a

rack, take special precautions to ensure that the rack remains mechanically
stable. The equipment rack must be solidly secured to the foundation, floor
and/or the adjacent racks.

4.3.2 Mounting the Chassis in the Rack

This section describes how to mount the 15100 Series Hub in the equipment rack.
CAUTION: Mounting the chassis requires a minimum of three people: Two people
to hold the unit, and one person to attach the rack mount screws. Follow the safe
lifting practices when handling the chassis. See the safety precautions in
Appendix B, Safety.

To Mount the Chassis in the Rack:

1. Place the 15100 Series Hub on a flat work surface and inspect it thoroughly for damage
before mounting. (The front EMI door should not be installed at this time.)
2. Two people are required to perform this step. Standing on each side of the chassis, place
one hand in the empty Fan Module compartment at the rear of the chassis. With the other
hand, grasp below the exhaust grill in the empty Line Card compartment at the front of
the chassis.
3. Slowly lift the chassis in unison. To prevent injury, avoid sudden twists or moves.
4. Insert the rear of the chassis between the rack rails. Align the chassis mounting flange
holes with the mounting holes in the rack rails.
5. With assistance from a third person, insert the mounting screws through the elongated
holes in the chassis mounting flange and into the threaded holes of the rack rails.
6. Securely tighten the eight rack mounting screws to fasten the chassis to the rack.

4.3.3 Connecting Chassis Ground

This section provides procedures for connecting the 15100 Series Hub to earth ground. This
procedure is required for all DC powered installations, and any AC powered installation where
compliance with Bellcore grounding requirements is necessary.

CAUTION: When installing the unit, the ground connection must always be made
first and disconnected last.

CAUTION: Always use appropriately gauged copper conductors for system ground
connections.

5 Installing Accessory
Modules

This chapter describes procedures for installation of the Fan Modules, Power Supply Modules ,
and Reference Clock Modules (RCM) in the iDirect 15100 Series.
This chapter contains the following sections
• Section 5.1, Power Supply Modules on page 31
• Section 5.2, Fan Modules on page 32
• Section 5.3, Reference Clock Modules on page 33
• Section 5.4, Applying AC Power on page 37
• Section 5.5, Configuring the Chassis IP Address on page 38

NOTE: Thoroughly review Appendix B, Safety before performing the procedures

in this chapter.

5.1 Power Supply Modules

The 15100 Series Hub Power Supply Modules function with 1+1 redundancy. The +24 VDC
output from each of the two Power Supply Modules are load sharing. If one of the two power
supply modules fails, the other one is capable of sourcing enough current to power the
chassis. In the event of failure, a “power supply failure” alarm is generated by the chassis
monitor and control subsystem. The chassis registers the failure with the NMS, and the alarm
is displayed in iMonitor.
WARNING: The system includes a redundant power supply. Connect each power
supply to a different, independent AC prime power source. Failure to do so will
result in total power failure of the chassis in the event that prime power is
interrupted.

To Install the Power Supply Modules:

1. Remove the chassis power supply access panel at the bottom front of the chassis.
2. Rotate the lock-down thumb screw of each module counter-clockwise to ensure that the
lock-down mechanism is withdrawn. A drawing of the module is shown in Figure 5-16 on
page 32.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 31

Figure 5-16. Power Supply Module

3. Insert a module into the left and right module bays. Ensure that each module is seated
properly by providing a firm but not excessive push on the extraction handle.
4. Secure the modules in the respective bays with the integral thumb screw hold-down by
rotating the thumb screws clockwise.
5. Reinstall the power supply access panel. Be sure that the access panel is flush with the
chassis surface.

5.2 Fan Modules

To Install the Fan Modules:
1. Align the Fan Module connector with the receptacle in the Fan Module bay. Ensure each
module is seated properly by providing a firm, but not excessive, push on or near the
extraction handle. See Figure 5-17.
2. Secure the modules in the respective bays by tightening the four fixing screws on each fan
module with a medium flat-blade screwdriver.

Figure 5-17. Fan Module Installation

32 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

NOTE: The new high capacity fans for the15100 chassis are somewhat noisier than
previous models. They may also go through a short period of resonance during
turn-on which abates within 5 to 10 seconds.

5.3 Reference Clock Modules

The introduction of Adaptive TDMA as supported in iDX Release 3.2 required development of a
new Reference Clock Module, referred to as the Reference Clock Module-Pulse Per Second
(RCM-PPS). The RCM-PPS provides 1 PPS timing pulses to the chassis backplane in addition to
the 10 MHz clock.
The RCM-PPS functions with 1+1 redundancy. There are slots for two RCM-PPS at the rear of
the chassis, either of which can supply a highly stable and accurate 10 MHz clock and 1 PPS
source to the chassis backplane. All Hub Line Cards are referenced to the primary RCM-PPS
timing source.
RCM-PPS redundancy is achieved using a hot-standby architecture. Timing signals from both
RCM-PPS modules are available to the line cards at all times. This differs from the RCM,
which achieves redundancy using a fail-over architecture, and which requires switching from
the primary to the backup.
The Reference Clock Modules can be installed with power applied to the chassis.

To Install the RCM-PPS:

1. Remove and store the RCM access panels, located on the back of the chassis.
2. Insert each RCM-PPS into its respective slot, gently pressing until the card is fully seated
in the backplane.
3. Tighten the four fixing screws. Do not over tighten.
4. If using external references or daisy-chain cabling, connect them at this time.

5.3.1 RCM-PPS Operational Constraints

The RCM-PPS retains the functionality of the RCM, and is backward-compatible with the
following software releases:
• iDS 6.x, 7.x, and 8.x
• iDX 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x
The RCM-PPS is compatible with all models of hub chassis that use the RCM. However PPS
distribution on the chassis backplane, required for A-TDMA operation, is only supported on
model 12102, 12202, 15052, and 15152 chassis.
The following additional constraints apply when using the RCM-PPS:
• The RCM-PPS must be installed in pairs. Do not mix RCM and RCM-PPS units within the
same chassis.
• If an external PPS reference is connected, an external 10 MHz reference signal must also
be connected.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 33

5.3.2 Indicators and Controls
The indicators and controls of the RCM-PPS are different from the RCM. The INT/EXT,
MULTI/SINGLE, and SLAVE/MASTER slide switches on the RCM have been replaced by
illuminated push buttons on the RCM-PPS. Integral LEDs provide visual confirmation of the
selected states. The push buttons on the RCM-PPS are non-latching, momentary contact.
They are operated by inserting the point of a pencil or a similar tool into the dimple atop the
actuator and pressing gently. The internal LEDs are green when the left-side label text is
selected (INT, MULTI, MASTER). See Figure 5-18.

Figure 5-18. RCM vs. RCM-PPS

The RCM-PPS must be installed in a powered RCM slot in order to select the operating state.
The initial power-on defaults are shown in Table 5-14 on page 35.
The RCM-PPS remembers the selected state. If power is lost, the RCM-PPS returns to the
selected operating state when power is restored. Table 5-14 on page 35 defines RCM-PPS
operational states and LED indications:

Multi-Chassis Operation with RCM-PPS
Daisy-chaining of synchronization signals for multi-chassis operation is discontinued starting in
iDX Release 3.2. However, the RCM-PPS provides continued support for daisy-chain operation
in systems using previous releases. See Figure 5-19.

Figure 5-19. Typical Daisy-Chain Configuration

To Connect a Slave Chassis:

1. Connect the 4 daisy-chain cables to the respective D-sub mini INPUT and OUTPUT ports of
the RCM-PPS as depicted in Figure 5-19.
2. If external references are used, connect them at this time.
3. Configure the selector states after applying power, performed later.

36 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

5.4 Applying AC Power
The 15100 Series Hub is powered by the 200-240 VAC mains of the installation facility. iDirect
recommends that each AC input to the chassis originate from independent 10 amp AC circuits.
The practice of using independent prime power sources takes advantage of the power supply
diversity built in to the chassis. If one of the prime power sources is lost, the chassis
continues operating with the second prime power source.

NOTE: Be sure to read the warning regarding input power in Section 3.1, Before
Beginning on page 11.

WARNING: Improper AC power source rating, excessive noise or transients, or an

undersized circuit breaker may result in service interruption.

WARNING: To remove power from the chassis, disconnect the AC power cord.

5.4.1 Before Applying Power

Check the status of the chassis before applying power and installing Hub Line Cards. Verify the
following:
• There are no Hub Line Cards installed
• Both Power Supply Modules are securely seated in their slots
• Both Reference Clock Modules are securely seated in their slots
• All Fan Modules are securely seated in their slots
• The power switch on each AC power connector is in the OFF position (O)
• Both ground studs are connected to a good earth ground

5.4.2 Applying Power

After connecting each AC power cord to its dedicated AC power source and enabling the
circuit breakers, perform the following:
To Apply Power:
1. Connect the AC power cords to the AC entry receptacles, A and B.
2. Move the power switches to the ON position (I).
3. Observe the power supply access panel on the front of the chassis. Verify that the
indicator for each Power Supply Module is green.
4. Verify that the POWER LED on each RCM-PPS is green.
5. Verify that all three Fan Modules are on and that the fans are spinning at approximately
the same speed. Confirm that the Fan Alarm Status LEDs are green.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 37

5.4.3 After Applying Power
The operating state of the RCM-PPS must be selected after power has been applied for the
first time. Select INT/EXT, MULTI/SINGLE, and MASTER/SLAVE as appropriate for the
particular configuration used. Confirm that the RCM-PPS status LEDs reflect the current
operating configuration. See Table 5-14 on page 35 for a description of LED states.

5.4.3.1 Lock Time

Upon initialization of the RCM-PPS, a three-minute warm up period must expire before timing
signals appear on the chassis backplane. This is to insure that the RCM-PPS has achieved
steady-state operating stability before presenting signals to the Hub Line Cards.
After the signals appear on the backplane and chassis alarms have cleared, the backup RCM-
PPS begins tracking the primary. The backup RCM-PPS achieves FLL lock within 7 minutes.
The 7-minute FLL lock time also applies in the case where the RCM-PPS is tracking an external
10 MHz source.
In networks running iDX Release 3.2 and above, phase lock of the RCM-PPS to an external
1 PPS source is achieved within 14 minutes after the start of FLL tracking.

5.5 Configuring the Chassis IP Address

Configuration and management of the 15100 Series Hub is performed using the iBuilder
application, which communicates with the chassis over an IP circuit. In order to access the
chassis, the IP address of the chassis MIDAS board must be configured. For the MIDAS IP
address configuration procedure, refer to the appropriate iDX Release of the iBuilder User
Guide.

6 Installing Hub Line Cards

This chapter describes procedures for installation of Hub Line Cards in the iDirect 15100
Series.
This chapter contains the following sections:
• Section 6.1, Overview on page 39
• Section 6.2, HLC Installation on page 40
• Section 6.3, Hub Line Card LEDs on page 45

NOTE: Thoroughly review Appendix B, Safety before performing the procedures

in this chapter.

NOTE: See Appendix C, Cable Preparation for information on the preparation of

cables.

6.1 Overview
The 15100 Series Hub is capable of operating with one Hub Line Card, or up to twenty line
cards. At a minimum, a Hub Line Card Kit contains:
• 1 Hub Line Card
• 2 Coaxial Patch Cables
• 1 LAN Patch Cable

NOTE: Based on the network configuration and service contract, the quantity of
Hub Line Card(s) received may vary.

For the Network Operator using multiple Hub Line Cards for a single network (for example,
configured as one downstream line card and multiple upstream line cards), it is recommended
that the slots are chosen in modulo 4 groupings. The slots in the chassis are designed to share
Start of Frame (SOF) synchronization timing in groups of four slots each. Each group of four
slots can be synchronized to the adjacent group of four under Network Management System
(NMS) control.

6.2 HLC Installation

Line card slot power must be OFF when inserting a line card. If replacing an existing HLC in a
configured/powered slot, see Section 8.3.6, Hub Line Cards on page 67.
For a new chassis that has never been configured, power to the 20 HLC slots is disabled by
default. If slot power has never been enabled, perform the following:

To Install a Hub Line Card:

1. Remove the blank panel from the front of the installation slot.

NOTE: To ensure proper airflow and EMI shielding, do not remove more blank
panels than required.

2. Ground the anti-static wrist strap by attaching the alligator clip to the wrist-strap
grounding stud inside the line card compartment as shown in Figure 6-20 on page 41.

40 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

3. Take the Hub Line Card out of the protective anti-static bag.
4. Remove the 75 ohm terminators, shown in Figure 6-21, from the F-Type Female
connectors on the Rx patch panel ports located beneath each slot where a line card is to
be installed.

Figure 6-21. Rx Patch Panel Terminators

5. Using the eject handles on the Hub Line Card, align the card top and bottom edges with
the slot guide rails. Insert the card, but do not push the card all the way into the chassis
backplane connector at this time.
WARNING: Damage to the Hub Line Card may result if the Rx coax patch cable is
NOT connected between the "Rx In” port of the line card and the Rx Patch Panel
prior to seating the line card into the backplane. Connecting the cable provides
additional grounding to the line card to minimize "ground bounce" during the line
card seating process and power-up.

6.2.1 Connecting Receive IF and LAN Cables
To Connect the Cables:
1. Connect the Rx coaxial patch cable (Part Number 9110-0117-0002) onto the line card Rx
In port. Finger tighten.
2. Connect the other end of the Rx coaxial patch cable to the corresponding Rx patch panel
port, immediately below the line card slot.
3. Connect a LAN cable (2200-0005-0003) from the 10/100 port of the line card to the LAN A
port of the chassis LAN Patch Panel. This is the management LAN port.
4. Connect a LAN cable from the LAN A port of the line card to the LAN B port of the chassis
LAN Patch Panel. This is the user traffic LAN port.

Note: For Evolution HLCs, the LAN B port is not used.

5. Apply firm pressure on the faceplate of the line card to seat the line card into the
backplane as shown in Figure 6-22.

Figure 6-22. Seating the Line Card

NOTE: Ensure that each module is seated properly by providing firm, but not
excessive, force on the line card. Do not ram the line card into the backplane.

6. Using a small flat-blade screwdriver, tighten the small faceplate hold-down screws at the
top and bottom of the line card faceplate. Do not over tighten.

42 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

7. If external monitoring of the received signal is required, remove the 75 Ohm terminator
from the Rx Out port of the line card. Connect the external monitoring equipment to the
Rx Out port with a good quality 75 Ohm coaxial cable.
8. Slide the F connector nut driver over each of the F-type connectors and tighten gently.
Do not connect the Tx cables now. The Tx cables are connected later.

NOTE: Torque F nuts to no more than 15 in-lbs. Do not over tighten.

WARNING: Do not connect the Tx coaxial patch cable to the Tx patch panel if the
line card has not been configured. Inadvertent transmission to the satellite may
occur.

6.2.2 Before Applying HLC Power

Confirm the following before applying Hub Line Card power:
• Verify that no RF coaxial cables are connected to the Tx, Rx, or Monitor connectors on
the rear of the chassis

• Verify that all Accessory Modules are securely inserted in the slots
• Verify that all LAN cables are connected to the appropriate Protocol Processor and the
LAN Switch/Hub
• Verify that the Protocol Processor is booted and the NMS is running
• Confirm that a PC or laptop (with a NIC card) is available, and that the iSite software is
loaded
At this point, the Hub Line Card is ready to be configured using iBuilder. Refer to the
appropriate iDX Release of the iBuilder User Guide at this time for complete details about
configuring and commissioning a new line card.

6.2.3 Applying Power to HLCs

Hub Line Card power is enabled using the iBuilder application.
After power is enabled, the Hub Line Cards begin initializing within 15 seconds. Observe the
HLC status LEDs. During the initialization process each of the three LEDs illuminate
sequentially, but only the STATUS LED remains green, while each of the other LEDs go dark.
Hub Line Cards achieve the operationally ready state approximately 60 seconds after power is
applied. See Table 6-17 on page 45 for a complete description of the LED states of the
operational line card.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 43

6.2.4 Connecting the Tx Cables
This section describes how to connect the transmit patch cables. Do not connect the HLC Tx
port until instructed to do so in the hub commissioning procedures outlined in the iBuilder
User Guide.

CAUTION: Before proceeding, confirm that no cables are connected to the Tx, Rx,
or Monitor ports on the rear of the chassis.

To Connect the Tx Patch Cables:

1. Connect the transmit coaxial patch cable (Part Number 9110-0117-0001) onto the line
card Tx Out port.
2. Connect the other end of the patch cable to the corresponding Tx patch panel port above
the line card slot.
3. Slide the F-Connector nut driver over each of the connectors. Tighten to no more than 15
in-lbs.

6.2.5 Verifying Hub Line Card Status

After the Hub Line Card becomes operational, the status is displayed as shown in Table 6-16.
Table 6-16. Functional Line Card LED States

Tx Green or Red
STATUS Green

The initial LED state could be different for each line card if there are multiple line cards with
different configurations. However, the STATUS LED should always be green. A red STATUS LED
indicates a malfunction of the line card.

6.2.6 Installing the EMI Door

Perform the following after all line cards are installed and all cabling has been connected.
To Install the EMI Door:
1. Place the front door on its hinges. Align the door hinge sockets with the two chassis hinge
pins.
2. Slide the door downward over the hinge pins.
3. Close and latch the door by rotating the door knob clockwise.
NOTE: The EMI door must be closed and latched at all times when access to the
line card compartment is not required. This minimizes damage to patch cables
and complies with EMI regulations.

site:
• Power Supply Module
• Fan Module
• Reference Clock Module - Pulse Per Second
• Hub Line Card
The spares compliment should include at least one of each type of Hub Line Card used in the
chassis. For example, if operating with a single transmit card and several receive cards, keep
at least one spare transmit card and one spare receive card of each type available at all
times.

8 Maintenance

This chapter describes maintenance procedures performed by the user in the field, including
replacement of Field Replaceable Units (FRU).
This chapter contains the following sections
• Section 8.1, Maintaining the Chassis on page 51
• Section 8.2, FRUs on page 52
• Section 8.3, Replacements on page 52

NOTE: Thoroughly review Appendix B, Safety before performing the procedures

in this chapter.

8.1 Maintaining the Chassis

The iDirect 15100 Series is designed to require little or no maintenance. Day to day
preventative maintenance consists of keeping the 15100 Series Hub clean and cool.
The air intakes of the 15100 Series Hub and Power Supply Modules are unfiltered. There are
no filters to change or clean. Ideally, the 15100 Series Hub is installed within an
environmentally controlled and conditioned facility, where dust and other particulate matter
in the air is filtered by a master air handling unit. Even so, it is possible that the chassis and
Accessory Modules may become coated with a layer of dust over time.
Periodically inspect the Fan Module and Power Supply Module intakes. If dust is evident,
remove it with a vacuum cleaner or forced air blower. Do not disassemble the 15100 Series
Hub or Accessory Modules. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
Be sure to keep the air intakes and front panel exhaust grill clean and free of obstructions.
Always install a cover plate over unused HLC slots. Operating without a cover plate over an
empty slot alters the airflow within the chassis, and can lead to overheating.
Monitor the ambient air temperature, periodically checking to be certain that the 15100
Series Hub is being maintained at or below the operating temperature specification. Look for
“hot spots” caused by proximity to other equipment or local airflow irregularities. Be sure to
keep the rack louvers and fans (if so equipped) clean and free of obstructions.
Low levels of vibration ordinarily encountered in normal operation can cause fasteners to
loosen over time. Periodically check that the 15100 Series Hub grounding stud nuts are tight

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 51

and that the connections to earth ground are sound. Never operate the 15100 Series Hub
without both ground studs connected to a good earth ground.
Likewise, periodically confirm that the retaining nuts, barrels, and ferrules of the many F-
type connectors have not loosened. Tighten F-connector retaining nuts to no more than 15 in-
lbs. Provide adequate cable and connector strain relief to help mitigate connector-related
failure scenarios.

8.2 FRUs
Because the iDirect 15100 Series is designed with modular serviceability in mind, a number of
components are considered to be Field Replaceable Units (FRU). The units may be replaced in
the field by the user without the assistance of specialized service personnel. The FRUs of the
iDirect 15100 Series include the following:
• Fan Modules
• Power Supply Modules
• Reference Clock Modules
• Fan Status Module
• MIDAS Board
• Hub Line Cards
Of these, the fan, power supply, and clock modules are “hot-swappable”, meaning that they
may be replaced without removing power from the 15100 Series Hub.
The Hub Line Cards may be replaced without removing power from the 15100 Series Hub, but
are not considered to be “hot-swappable” in the same sense as the modules above. Power to
a failed HLC slot must be disabled via the iBuilder application before inserting a new line
card. The feature permits replacement of a failed HLC without de-energizing the entire 15100
Series Hub.
Replacement of the Fan Status Module or MIDAS Board requires that the chassis be completely
de-energized.

8.3 Replacements
This section describes replacement procedures for each FRU of the iDirect 15100 Series.

8.3.1 Fan Modules

When a Fan Module fails, the 15100 Series Hub detects the fan failure and reports it to the
NMS.
The chassis contains three Fan Modules. Fan Module failure is defined as a propeller in any of
the Fan Modules spinning below a predetermined rotation rate.
A fully loaded chassis (with 20 line cards) can remain in operation with two functional Fan
Modules. Replace a failed Fan Module immediately. A second failed Fan Module can cause a
fully loaded chassis to become overheated, possibly resulting in damage to individual
components or even complete 15100 Series Hub shut down.
The following procedure assumes that power is applied to the 15100 Series Hub.

52 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

To Replace a Fan Module:
1. Observe the Fan Alarm Status LEDs on the rear of the chassis to identify the failed fan.
Momentarily press the Fan Alarm Reset button on the panel to double check that the fan
has actually failed. A red LED indicates a failed fan.

NOTE: A failed Fan Module propeller in an operational chassis spins slowly

backwards due to back air pressure.

2. If the unit does not respond to the Fan Alarm Reset button, loosen the four fixing screws
on the failed Fan Module.
3. Slide the failed Fan Module out of its mounting bay by providing a firm but not excessive
pull on the extraction handle.
4. Slide the new Fan Module into the empty module bay. Ensure the module is seated
properly by providing a firm but not excessive push on or near the extraction handle.
5. Momentarily press the Fan Alarm Reset button.
6. Verify that the fan status LED changes from red to green. Also, check for abnormal fan
noise or fan blade rotation.
7. Secure the module in the bay by tightening the four fixing screws with a medium flat-
blade screwdriver.

8.3.2 Power Supply Modules

When a Power Supply Module fails, the 15100 Series Hub detects the failure and reports it to
the NMS.
The chassis contains two Power Supply Modules. A fully loaded chassis (with 20 line cards) can
remain in operation with one functional Power Supply Module. Replace a failed Power Supply
Module immediately. A second failed Power Supply Module will cause the chassis to shut down
completely.
The following procedure assumes that power is applied to the 15100 Series Hub.
To Replace a Power Supply Module:
1. Observe the power supply status indicators on the power supply access panel at the
bottom front of the chassis. The status indicator will be dark for a failed module.
2. Remove the power supply access panel by turning the two hold-down thumb screws
counter clockwise. Set the panel aside.
3. Loosen the hold down thumb screw of the failed Power Supply Module by turning counter
clockwise.
4. Slide the failed Power Supply Module out of its mounting bay by providing a firm but not
excessive pull on the extraction handle.
5. Slide the new module into the empty bay. Ensure that the module is seated properly by
providing a firm but not excessive push on the extraction handle.
6. Verify that the Power Supply Module STATUS LED changes from off to green.
7. Secure the module in the bay by rotating the thumb screws clockwise.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 53

8. Reinstall the power supply access panel. Ensure that the panel is flush with the chassis
surface.

8.3.3 Reference Clock Modules

This section describes two scenarios for replacement of the RCM or RCM-PPS. The first
scenario describes replacement of a failed RCM-PPS with another RCM-PPS. The second
scenario describes replacement of functional RCMs with the RCM-PPS in an existing
operational system, whether for continued operation in a pre-adaptive environment (iDX
Release 3.1 and earlier), or as part of an upgrade.

8.3.3.1 Replacing a Failed RCM-PPS

When an RCM-PPS fails, the 15100 Series Hub detects the failure and reports it to the NMS.
The chassis contains two RCM-PPS units. A chassis can remain in continuous operation with
one functional unit. Replace a failed unit immediately. A second failed RCM-PPS will cause
subordinate oscillators to go into hold-over or “flywheel” mode. The subordinate oscillators
will be undisciplined, resulting in a gradual divergence of synchronization over time.
The following procedure assumes that power is applied to the 15100 Series Hub.
To Replace an RCM-PPS:
1. Identify the failed unit by observing the status LEDs. A failed RCM-PPS displays a red FAIL
LED.
2. Loosen the four fastening screws at the corners of the failed unit using a small flat-blade
screwdriver.
3. Unplug the failed unit from the backplane by providing a firm but not excessive pull on
the extraction handle. Do not entirely remove the unit from the chassis at this time.
4. Disconnect the external reference(s) and daisy-chain cabling, if used.
5. Fully remove the failed unit from the chassis.
6. Insert the new RCM-PPS into the empty RCM bay, but do not fully insert into the backplane
connector.
7. Re-connect the external reference(s) and the daisy-chain cabling, if used.
8. Seat the RCM-PPS fully into the backplane connector by providing a firm but not excessive
push on or near the extraction handle.
9. Verify that the POWER LED is green. Select INT/EXT, MULTI/SINGLE, and MASTER/SLAVE
as appropriate.
10. Confirm that the REF CLK and FLL LED indications are correct for the particular
configuration. See Table 5-14 on page 35 for a complete description of LED states.

8.3.3.2 Replacing Existing RCMs

Replacement of RCMs with the RCM-PPS must be performed in pairs. The units may not be
mixed within the same chassis. Unlike the RCM, which employs fail-over switching to achieve
redundancy, the RCM-PPS employs hot-standby redundancy architecture. Timing signals from
both the Primary and the Back-up RCM-PPS are available to the Hub Line Cards at all times. In
the event of a failure, redundant back-up is seamless, without switching transient effects.

54 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

Because of the hot-standby architecture, the concept of a “primary” and a “backup” unit (as
viewed by the Hub Line Cards) is not applicable when using the RCM-PPS. If two RCM-PPS units
are energized at the same time, the unit in slot RCM B of a 20-slot chassis tends to become
the primary. For a 4-slot chassis, slot RCM A is biased to become the primary. However,
reversal of the roles in both chassis is transparent to the Hub Line Cards. A backup RCM-PPS
may be identified in operation by the blinking FLL and PPS LEDs. The blinking LEDs represent
tracking of the external reference inputs, or tracking of another RCM-PPS in the same chassis.
The failover roles of the original RCM remain unchanged. A primary RCM ON/STBY LED is
green, while a backup RCM ON/STBY LED is yellow. The roles are negotiated by the RCMs at
startup, and are slot independent.
The RCM-PPS provides accurate system timing without external references. However, iDirect
recommends synchronizing the primary RCM-PPS to the master station clock. If an external 1
PPS reference is used, an external 10 MHz reference must also be provided. The RCM-PPS
locks to the external 10 MHz reference regardless of the state of the 1 PPS input. Table 2-6 on
page 9 specifies requirements for the 10 MHz and PPS external inputs. If the external
reference signals do not meet the specified minimums, operate the RCM-PPS in internal
reference mode (INT).
Because the RCM, RCM-PPS, and hub line cards all employ a Frequency-Locked Loop (FLL)
oscillator architecture, temporary removal of both clock modules does not cause immediate
loss of system synchronization. When the RCMs are removed, the line card clocks go into hold-
over mode. After the primary RCM-PPS initialization and warm-up period (~ 3 minutes), timing
signals are enabled on the chassis backplane. At that point all other system clocks begin FLL
tracking, and gradually move into FLL lock. Additionally, PPS tracking time will be 8-13
minutes and is contingent on FLL lock. The FLL tracking process may require up to 7 minutes.
This also applies to the primary RCM-PPS when tracking an external reference, and to the
backup RCM-PPS when tracking the primary.
For the majority of existing networks, RCM replacement with the RCM-PPS can be performed
without adverse impact to network operations. In some instances, a particular remote may
drift beyond the tracking capability of the upstream demodulator, necessitating re-
acquisition. This is more likely to occur with narrowband carriers using earlier hardware and
software releases, and is consistent with existing fail-over behavior. For this reason iDirect
recommends performing RCM replacement during a scheduled maintenance window.
iDirect has identified specific network configurations for which link availability is impacted.
The following scenarios apply to DVB-S2 and iNFINITI networks:
• For all releases up to and including iDX Release 3.1.x, 8PSK upstream carriers with symbol
rates lower than 512 ksps may be unavailable for between 3 and 5 minutes following
primary RCM-PPS initialization
• For all releases earlier than iDX Release 2.0, upstream carriers with symbol rates lower
than 512 ksps may be unavailable for between 3 and 5 minutes following primary RCM-PPS
initialization

B.3 Electrical Safety

The 15100 Series Hub accessory modules and Hub Line Cards are designed to be removed and
replaced while power is applied to the system without presenting an electrical hazard to the
user.
Follow the warnings and cautions shown here to protect personnel and equipment from
electrical hazards.

WARNING: Do not work on the system, or connect or disconnect cables, during periods of
lightning activity.

WARNING: Do not remove any chassis panel other than the hot plug-in access panels. Do
not touch internal power supplies when the power cord is connected.

Observe the following basic guidelines when working with any electrical equipment:
• Before beginning any procedures requiring access to the chassis interior, locate the
emergency power off switch for the room or service circuits.
• Disconnect all power and external cables before installing or removing the chassis.
• Do not work alone when potentially hazardous conditions exist.
• Never assume that power has been disconnected; always check.
• Do not perform any action that creates a potential hazard to personnel or makes the
equipment unsafe. Never install equipment that appears damaged.
• Carefully examine the work area for possible hazards, such as a wet floor, ungrounded
power extension cables, and missing safety grounds.
• Never work on energized circuits while wearing an ESD protection strap.

B.4 Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) damage, which occurs when electronic cards or components are
improperly handled, can result in complete or intermittent failure. Always use an antistatic
strap when handling a Hub Line Card.
Observe the following guidelines for preventing ESD damage:
• Handle the chassis only by the metal enclosure

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 75

• Handle the Hub Line Card by the faceplates or board edges only. Avoid touching the
circuit traces or any card edge connector pins
• Avoid contact between the connector pins and clothing, ESD voltages on clothing can
cause damage
• Always use an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap and ensure that it makes good skin
contact
• Before installing or removing the line card from the chassis, connect the alligator
grounding clip of the wrist strap to the grounding stud inside the Hub Line Card
compartment (see <CrossReference>Figure 6-20 <CrossReference>on page 41)
• Avoid contact between the modules and clothing. The wrist strap protects the modules
from ESD voltages on the body only; ESD voltages on clothing can still cause damage.
• When removing a Hub Line Card, place the removed card (component side facing up) into
an antistatic surface or static shielding bag

B.5 Physical and Environmental Considerations

To protect the equipment and to avoid personal injury, observe the physical and
environmental considerations below when installing the 15100 Series Hub:

B.5.1 Ventilation
Slots and openings on the chassis provide ventilation for cooling. To protect the chassis from
overheating, the openings must not be blocked or covered at any time. Do not place the
chassis in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or enclosed rack, unless proper ventilation
is provided or the manufacturer’s instructions have been followed. If there is any dust build
up on the vent openings of the chassis, vacuuming is recommended to remove the particulate
matter and ensure proper airflow.

B.5.2 AC Polarization
The chassis is equipped with AC power cords that fit into the power outlets only one way. Do
not modify the plugs by defeating this feature. If the plug does not fit, contact an electrician
to replace the outlet, or obtain the proper power cord. To prevent electric shock or impaired
performance, do not use the plug with an extension cord or extension outlet.

B.5.3 Power Cord Protection

Route the AC power cords so they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed
upon or against them; pay particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles,
and at the point where they exit the chassis.

B.5.4 Overloading
Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this can
result in a risk of fire or electrical shock.

76 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

B.5.5 Electrical Safety
For electrical safety, power line-operated accessories connected to the chassis should bear
the UL, NRTL, and CE listing marks. They must not be modified so as to defeat the safety
features. This helps to avoid any potential hazard from electrical shock or fire. If in doubt,
contact qualified service personnel.

B.5.6 Water and Moisture

To reduce the risk of fire or electrical shock, do not expose the product to rain or moisture.

B.5.7 Lightning
For added protection, unplug the product from the wall outlet (and disconnect the antenna
and cable system) during a lightning storm, or when left unattended and unused for long
periods. Doing so prevents damage to the product from lightning and power-line surges.

B.5.8 Heat
Do not place the chassis near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other
products (including amplifiers) that produce heat.

B.5.9 Accessories
To avoid personal injury or damage to the chassis, do not place the unit on any unstable rack,
cart, stand, table, or bracket. Mounting of the product must be performed according to the
manufacturer’s instructions.

B.5.10 Attachments
Do not use attachments unless recommended by the manufacturer, as they may cause hazards
or damage to equipment.

B.5.11 Restricted Access

The product is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area is
one where access can only be gained by service personnel through the use of a special tool,
lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the
location.

B.5.12 Grounding
Never defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment in the absence of a suitably
installed ground conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an
electrician if uncertain that suitable grounding is available.

B.6 Operational and Maintenance Safety

When operating the 15100 Series Hub, observe the following safety guidelines:

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 77

• Cables — Only use cables supplied or recommended by iDirect.
• Cleaning — Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a dry hand towel or a
vacuum cleaner to remove dust.
• Object and Liquid Entry — Never push foreign objects of any kind into the openings of the
15100 Series Hub. Doing so may “short out” circuits, possibly resulting in fire, electric
shock, or equipment damage. Avoid exposure of the chassis to liquids.

B.7 Service
Do not attempt to service the internal assemblies. Opening and removing service covers may
expose dangerous voltages or other hazards. There are no user serviceable parts inside.
Opening the service covers voids the warranty. Refer all servicing to qualified service
personnel.

Appendix C Cable
Preparation

This appendix describes the cable preparation details and has these sections:
• Section C.1, Coax Cable Preparation on page 95
• Section C.2, Ethernet Port Pinouts on page 99
• Section C.3, Console Port Connection on page 99

C.1 Coax Cable Preparation

NOTE: The procedures in this section, for preparing coaxial cables, are meant to
be generic. Cables and connectors should be installed per manufacturer’s
requirements specific to the brands preferred. In general, specific and detailed
instructions are for RG-6 cables and connectors, only.

iDirect recommends that a solid copper center conductor, coaxial cable be used with a
minimum of 60% + 40% braid and double foil shield to connect the equipment, such as:
• RG-6 — 0.04 inch (1 mm), outdoor rated, Quad Shielded, solid bare copper center
conductor, for cable lengths less than or equal to 225 feet (68.5 meters)
• RG-11 — 0.064 inch (1.6 mm), outdoor rated, Quad Shielded, solid bare copper center
conductor, for cable lengths less than or equal to 400 feet (121.9 meters)
Before connecting the cables, connectors on each end must be installed.
The center conductor must be straight and extend 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) beyond the end of the F-
connector, and the connector should be securely crimped to the cable.
NOTE: iDirect does not recommend using RG-59 with solid bare copper center
conductor. RG-6 or RG-11 Quad Shield or other outdoor quality, 75-ohm type of
coax can be used.

If different types of coaxial cable are used other than the recommended quad shield RG-6 or
RG-11, the following problems can occur:
• Co-channel Interference – If signals at the same frequency are carried on long, parallel
runs of coaxial cable (for example, in cable trays, or riser) interference can occur
between the signals
• Higher quality cable helps to prevent this with better shielding
• Co-channel interference causes degradation and higher packet loss rate

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 95

• Good return loss – High quality cable and correct connectors help ensure an optimal
return loss of 10 dB or more

NOTE: Excessive DC Resistance – will result in excessive voltage drop across the
IFL cable. Hence, the voltage at the BUC may be too low to operate properly.

NOTE: Section 4.1.2, Tools and Supplies on page 21 lists all of the recommended
tools for terminating coax cables.

To terminate the cables with F-Type connectors:

1. Cut off each end of the coax cable squarely, using the proper cable cutter as shown in
Figure C-1.

Figure C-1. Coax Cable Cutting Technique

WARNING: Wear protective eye wear while cutting cables and terminating
connectors.

WARNING: The center conductor must be straight and cylindrical without any
burrs. Failure to do so can damage the satellite router, BUC, and/or LNB input
connector.

2. Remove the jacket material and foam insulation according to the length defined under
Length A in Table C-1. For RG-6, use a two-step Coax Stripper such as the LC-CST 1257
from Paladin Tools.

Table C-1. Coax Trim Dimensions

Length A Length B Length C
(inch (mm)) (inch (mm)) (inch (mm))
RG-6 5/8 (15.9) 1/4 (6.4) 3/8 (9.5)
RG-11 13/32 (10.3) 3/32 (2.4) 13/32 (10.3)

96 iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual

3. Remove any foil in the braid as shown in Figure C-2.

Figure C-2. Cutting Technique for Removing Foil in the Braid

4. Fold the braid back over the jacket and trim the braid to the length as defined under
Length C in Table C-1 on page 96 and shown in Figure C-3.

Figure C-3. Folding the Braid

5. Flare the inner, outer braids and the outer foil shield only. Do not flare the inner foil
shield (last foil around dielectric).
6. (If using a coax stripper, skip this step.) Being careful not to cut into the copper of the
center conductor, remove the foil and cut the dielectric to the length shown under
Length B in Table C-1 on page 96. Remove any dielectric residue.
7. If the conductive foil is burred, then smooth out the burr so that the edge (area where the
dielectric material was removed) is smooth and provides a lead-in for the connector
mandrel.
8. Install the RG-6 connector compression sleeve, or mandrel, (top left (A) in Figure C-4 on
page 98) over foil and underneath the braid. A good, weatherproof outdoor connector
mandrel should have a visible O-Ring (bottom right (B) Figure C-4 on page 98).

NOTE: The white colored inner dielectric insulation should be flush with the inner
rear surface of the connector. Refer to the picture on the right (C) in Figure C-4
on page 98 for an RG-6/RG-11 termination.

iDirect 15100 Series Installation, Support, and Maintenance Manual 97

NOTE: Since the RG-11 connector has a built-in center pin, ensure that the coax
center pin makes contact to the internal seizing pin of the connector. Refer to
Figure C-4.

Figure C-4. Attaching the Compression fitting F-type Connector

9. Finish connecting the cable to the connector with the compression tool connector, such as
Holland Compression Tool 1855 as shown in Figure C-5.

Figure C-5. Compression fitting F-Type Weatherproof Plug and Tool

10. Inspect and ensure that the copper center conductor only protrudes 1/8 inch (3.2 mm)
nominally beyond the rim of the F-connector. Trim if necessary.
CAUTION: The center conductor length must be a minimum of 1/16 inch (1.6 mm)
to a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) protrusion beyond the rim of the F type
connector. It must be straight and cylindrical without any burrs at the end. Failure
to follow this technique could result in damage to the satellite router, BUC, LNB
connector and/or possible intermittent service.
