Absolute Value
- The absolute value of a number is the
distance between that number and zero.
- It is denoted by “| |” two bars.
Example:
| 2 | = 2 “the absolute value of 2 is 2”
| -2 | = 2 “the absolute value of -2 is 2”

-| 2 | = -2 “the negative absolute value


of 2 is -2”
-| -2 | = -2 “the negative absolute value
of negative 2 is -2”
Look at the number line.

On the number line:


there are 5 units from 0 to 5. | 5 | = 5
there are 5 units from 0 to -5. | -5 | = 5
The number of units from 0 to any given integer
represents the absolute value of the integer.
It is NEVER negative.

Evaluate the absolute value:
1) | -4 | = 4
2) | 3 | = 3
3) | 0 | = 0
4) | 1 | = 1
5) | -25 | = 25
6) -| 49 | = -49
7) -| -35 | = -35
Absolute Value
Evaluate the absolute value:
1) | 4 + 2| = | 6 | = 6
2) | 10 – 5 | = | 5 | = 5
3) | -9 | - | 2 | = 9 - 2 = 7
4) | 2 + 3 | - │4 - 3│ = 5 - 1 = 4
5) | 7 - 4 | - │5 - 3│= 3 - 2 = 1
Absolute Value
Evaluate the absolute value:
1) | x | = 7
x = 7 and x = -7
Opposites
• Two numbers that have the same
ABSOLUTE VALUE, but different signs
are called opposites.
Example -6 and 6 are opposites because
both are 6 units away from zero.
| -6 | = 6 and | 6 | = 6
