ACTIVITY: English Plus for Teachers and NWSSU Practice

Participants: SPNHS Teachers
Description: Teachers are the most influential professionals and their influence
remains in their students. SPNHS English Department spearhead a
English Upskilling course to the teachers who are not English Majors as
their initiative to help their co-teachers when it comes to the
appropriateness of their grammar and language.

Objectives: The following were the specific objectives of the conduct of the activity:
a. to recognize the most commonly mispronounced words, common errors
in grammar and commonly misspelled words
b. to conduct English class in order to upskill the non-English major
teachers in grammar and language, and
c. to apply the skills that they will acquire from the English Plus Class

RESULTS: The identified objectives and targets for the activity were met.
a. recognized the most commonly mispronounced words, common
errors in grammar and commonly misspelled words
b. conducted English class in order to upskill the non-English major
teachers in grammar and language, and
c. applied the skills that they will acquire from the English Plus Class

Participants’ Active involvement and participation of the non- English Major Teachers
Feedback was evident as they were able to get higher scores in their post-test after
the session.
Methodology
English crosses cultures, countries and industries. It's often used as a 'common
tongue' if neither person is a native speaker. This means teaching people English
can be truly rewarding: students of English have many new opportunities and
doors open to them thanks to their skills. And this statement might have the same
implication if teacher who are non-English majors where given a course to upskill
and enhance their English Language Skills both in syntax and language. This will
surely lead to a better result in English Subject when a non-English Subject
Teacher is knowledgeable with English Language and Grammar.

Educators are always expected to be well-versed when it comes to English

Language but oftentimes these are the teachers who uses descriptive grammar
which means, they speak the language and do converse using the language but
grammatically erroneous. On the other hand, English Major Teachers are
expected to utilize the prescriptive grammar, this means English Teachers use
English grammar correctly.

San Policarpo National High School, being one of the best schools in the Division
of Calbayog City believes that in order for a school to become effective and
competitive, we must equip our teachers with a clear understanding about English
Language and its components.

The Principal, Milaner Reyes Oyo-a along with his team in English Department
conducted a program wherein the English Teachers of SPNHS must conduct a
refresher course in English Language and Grammar. This program was not meant
to humiliate teachers who are non- English majors but rather to enhance their
English Language and grammar skills- English Plus.

For 6 weeks, the team was able to conduct classes to the various department.
First, they provide the pre-test of the skills they are to acquire after the checking
followed the giving of inputs as sort of review and new skills that will discover.
Then, posttest was given which also shown a very evident increase in the scores
compared to the pre-test. As a concluding part of the said refresher, they were
given a 5-item assignment as there take home activity.

Moreover, in our desire to strengthen the English Language and Grammar Skills of
the Teachers, we, the English Department concluded also that the aspiring
teachers called the Practice teachers of NorthWest Samar State University
(NWSSU) had undergone the English Plus class last April 2022. This we were able
to discover that they need the intervention more since they are to take the LET.

Just because we are teachers it doesn’t mean that we already know everything.
Learning is a constant activity to upgrade, unlearn, and upskill our knowledge and
also to be able to deliver appropriate English Language and grammar to the
students since they will be applying what they learned from the teacher preparing
them to be globally competitive individuals.

Teaching English Language is not just a responsibility of English Educators but it

should be by the - EDUCATORS IN GENERAL.

Management of the Activity

A scheme of task and schedule was given to the English Teachers as to what
department will they be conducting their class. Each Teacher was given an
assigned lesson to be taught to their respective department.
Logistics Arrangements
Both Junior and Senior English Teachers were given equal task to conduct the
said activity. Reproduction of the materials needed in the said English Plus Class
were all charged to MOOE.
Monitoring and Evaluation

Mrs. Remirose Doann Getigan-Yu, The English Department head consolidate the
attendance of the attendees per class. Usual questions were asked to the
facilitator on how the session went well.
