1 ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

1.1 Assessment Model

The external integrated summative assessment will be conducted through a trade test as prescribed under
Section 26 D of the Skills Development Act and defined by the Trade Test Regulations. It will be conducted
through an evaluation of written and practical tasks covering critical aspects of the trade in a simulated
environment at an assessment centre accredited by QCTO and conducted by an assessor registered by the
National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB). The assessment will take place over a minimum of 2 days.

1.2 Qualification Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as an/a Heavy Equipment Mechanic

An/A Heavy Equipment Mechanic A Heavy Equipment Mechanic maintains, diagnoses faults in and repairs
heavy equipment such as earth moving or mining equipment, including engines, mechanical parts and
hydraulically or electrically powered systems.

A qualified learner will be able to:

 Performing preventative and scheduled maintenance on heavy equipment

 Dismantling, assessing, repairing and reassembling heavy equipment engine and power train
system components

 Diagnosing and repairing faults in heavy equipment diesel engine and power train systems

1.3 Assessment Standards

1.3.1 Assessment Standards for the Qualification

Integrated Assessment Focus Area 1

Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on heavy equipment. 20%

Associated Assessment Criteria

 Equipment is serviced according to manufacturer's specifications and schedule.

 The service is completed within the specified time.

 The appropriate tools, equipment and service parts are selected, and used correctly and safely.

 Technical information is sourced and correctly interpreted.

 All relevant safety and environmental criteria are adhered to.

 The work area is restored to its original condition.

 All defects are identified and reported.

 The appropriate checks after servicing are carried out correctly.

 Oral and written responses to questions demonstrate an understanding of general principles and
critical issues relating to preventative and scheduled maintenance.

Dismantle, assess, repair and reassemble heavy equipment engine and power train system components.

 Engine and power train system components are repaired according to manufacturer's specifications
and procedures.

 The component repair is completed within the specified time.

 The appropriate tools, equipment and replacement parts are selected, and used correctly and
safely.

 Technical information is sourced and correctly interpreted.

 All relevant safety and environmental criteria are adhered to.

 The work area is restored to its original condition.

 All defects are identified and reported.

 Re-usability is correctly determined using the relevant methods.

 The appropriate pre- and post-checks are carried out correctly.

 Oral and written responses to questions demonstrate an understanding of general principles and
critical issues relating to component operations and functional specifications.

Integrated Assessment Focus Area 3

Diagnose and repair faults in heavy equipment diesel engine and power train systems. 50%

Associated Assessment Criteria

 Equipment systems are repaired according to manufacturer's specifications and procedures.

 The system repair is completed within the specified time.

 The appropriate tools, equipment and replacement components or parts are selected, and used
correctly and safely.

 Technical information is sourced and correctly interpreted.

 All relevant safety and environmental criteria are adhered to.

 The work area is restored to its original condition.

 The appropriate diagnostic process is followed and the root cause of the fault is identified correctly.

 The appropriate pre- and post-checks are carried out correctly.

 Oral and written responses to questions demonstrate understanding of general principles and
critical issues relating to system operations and diagnostic processes.

3 CRITICAL ASPECTS OF THE INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS TO BE ASSESSED EXTERNALLY

4 CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

 Qualified as an Earthmoving or Heavy Equipment Mechanic.

 Registered as a practising Earthmoving or Heavy Equipment Mechanic.

 3 years' relevant post-qualification industry experience working as an Earthmoving or Heavy


Equipment Mechanic.

 2 years' relevant practical experience training apprentice Earthmoving or Heavy Equipment


Mechanics.

 Trained as an artisan trade assessor and deemed competent to conduct trade tests or be
recognised by the NAMB as a competent assessor to conduct trade tests through RPL based on a
previous assessor qualification and/or experience.

 Employed by an artisan trade test centre accredited by the QCTO to conduct trade tests or a centre
applying to be accredited.

5 FOUNDATIONAL LEARNING

Foundational Learning Competence is a pre-requisite for access to the external integrated summative
assessment.

6 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

In order to qualify for the external summative assessment learners must have a copy of a completed and
signed Statement of Work Experience as well as proof of successful completion of the following subjects and
modules or alternative programmes where applicable.
