Forensic Science Unit 2 Lab

Citizen journalism allows members of the public to help produce news content, especially through social media which can provide eyewitness accounts. The document discusses two cases where social media helped uncover the real circumstances around deaths. In the first case, Twitter users provided evidence that contradicted the police's account of Ian Tomlinson's death at a protest. In the second case, social media found witnesses to Jimmy Mubenga being fatally restrained during deportation, contrary to official claims of illness. While social media enables finding new witnesses, it can make trials more difficult due to potential jury bias.

1.) For journalists, what is “citizen journalism” (also known as collaborative journalism).

Answer: It means to accept that they can’t know everything and to allow other people
with the help of social media to be their eyes and ears for things.

2.) For typical members of the public, what is “citizen journalism”?

Answer: It can mean being the passive consumers of news or co producing news.

3.) What technological tool was used to investigate an alternative truth in the two cases Mr.
Lewis discusses?
Answer: Social media, specifically Twitter

4.) What act of violence happened to Ian Tomlinson on April 1, 2009 in London? Who hurt
him? What was he trying to do when he became a victim?
Answer: He was killed at the G20 protests by a police officer who struck in the back of a
head with a baton which caused Ian to fall and then die. He wasn’t protesting but was
trying to get home and had to go through the protests.

5.) What was the story that was told by the police about what happened to Ian?
Answer: The police tried to tell a story that Ian had died of natural causes and the police
never touched or approached him. They also said that the police tried to resuscitate him,
but were advised not too because they thought that protesters were throwing “missiles”
at them.

6.) How did twitter play a role in finding more evidence in Ian’s assault
Answer: Mr. Lewis used Twitter to try and find witnesses/protesters from that day so that
they would be able to try and figure out what actually happened leading up to Ian’s death
because they were suspicious of other news outlets

7.) What was the official version (according to the authorities) of the events that happened
to Jimmy Mubenga?
Answer: They said that he had gotten sick on the flight and the plane had returned to
where it came from, from there he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced
dead.

8.) What actually happened to Jimmy Mubenga?

Answer: Three security guards on the plane were trying to restrain Jimmy into his seat
when he was trying to resist being deported. They then put him into a dangerous hold
where for some people it will quiet them down, but the hold can also lead to potential
asphyxia(suffocation).

9.) How did Mr. Lewis find witnesses to Jimmy Mubenga’s assault?
Answer: He used Twitter again to try and have people come forward when he started
talking about an Angolan man that died on a flight.
10.) In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using social media to
help solve crimes?
Answer: I think that one advantage of using social media would be being able to find
witnesses that saw the crime or whatever happened and hopefully having a video of it. I
think that one of the disadvantages would be how it might possibly make things harder
during a trial because of the fact that ideally you want a unbiased jury, but that is
becoming harder and harder to find because of social media.
