About Milaap
Milaap is a social enterprise, powering the next disruption in India's socio -economic development by addressing interventions which have traditionally been charity/grant driven such as water, health, education with innovative financing models that value the 700mn Indians at the bottom of the pyramid as dignified consumers, suppliers and producers as opposed to helpless donation recipients. In just over a year Milaap has raised 5mn INR (100K USD) as interest free loans and loaned it to four field partners which have utilized the money to give people access to water filters, toilets, drinking water connections, smokeless cook stoves, solar lights, vocational training and jobs, impacting more than 1200 people.
Operational Model
While Milaap raises money (as loans) online from individuals, it also works with corporates who are keen on to ensure that the measures taken as CSR, can make their impact felt in a more transparent, accountable and sustainable manner. It partners with social enterprises, rural supply chain providers providing last- mile financing to catalyze the adoption of essential services for the poor such as quality education, affordable healthcare, clean water, safe lighting and fair markets for marginalized farmers and artisans. Key to Milaaps financing model, are the following best practices:
a) It ensures that the loan is used for the intended purpose by providing coupons/vouchers using against which borrowers buy the product (eg. water filters) or avail the service (eg. vocational training) as opposed to cash disbursements. b) Its interest rates are 50% lesser than that of existing microfinance rates as interventions which Milaap funds, are sustainable only at interest rates in the range of 12-18% APR The above practices ensures that Milaap has a high social return on investment(SROI) of 14.6, which implies that it is creating value of around 14.6 dollars for every $1 given as a loan.( Please refer to the attachment on SROI for a detailed methodology for calculation)
