Electronics
The lock has two electronic sub-assemblies, the card reader,
and the main printed circuit board.
The card reader is weather resistant and will perform properly in
either an interior or exterior environment. In extreme cold
environments the card slot may become covered in frost or ice
which can usually be displaced by insertion of the key card.
The main printed circuit board contains the electronic circuit
components and the 4 AA alkaline batteries.

Mechanics
The mechanical design of the lock allows it to be adapted to
several mortise lock cases. The current version is compatible
with the Onity ANSI mortise lock and the Onity EURO mortise
lock. DIN, bored lock, and tubular latch will be added in phase 2.
The ANSI lock conforms to the following BHMA Type(s).

Operation

How it Works
In the locked position the outside handle will turn freely without
any resistance.
To unlock the door, insert a valid key card. A green light
indicates the lock is unlocked. Remove the card and operate the
handle to open the door.
Once inside the room, allow the door to close and turn the
thumb turn to project the deadbolt to insure privacy. When the
deadbolt is projected the lock will reject cards, except any card
that has been programmed with “privacy override”.

Light Signal Indications

Green – lock is unlocked
Green Flashing – lock is in office mode and unlocked.
Red – card is rejected – not authorized for this lock
Red after delay – card not encoded
Red Flashing – lock has been blocked by a blocking card
Green + Red Flashing – Low Battery
Green + Red Alternating – Deadbolt privacy Indication
Green + Red Alternating – Not valid for this time shift

Installation

Templates
Each master carton of locks contains one paper installation
template. Generally the paper template is only used to prepare
one or two doors by hand. See the appendix for a copy of the
templates.
NOTE: Always check a template with a ruler to be sure it was
printed to scale before using it to drill a door.

Installation Tools
For production installation of several locks Onity requires the
use of production door machining equipment. This equipment
insures that the door is prepared properly and that it’s integrity
and strength is not compromised

Door Mortiser
Two very similar machines are available for making the mortise
lock pocket in a wood door.

Door Face Hole Drilling Fixtures

Two similar machines are available for accurately locating and
drilling the holes in the door faces and preparing the edge of a
wood door.
Adaptor plates are available to fit existing “Accubore Jigs”
manufactured by Weaver.

The Virutex UC16K has template plates for drilling and

routing wood doors, and locating the drilling holes for metal
doors.

Metal Door Tools
To prepare a metal door you will need a selection of metal
cutting hole saws and a band file such as the Milwaukee 6101
or equal.

Appendix. of the door according to the dimensions on the template.
Drill the face holes through the door. Adjacent to the 54 mm (2
1/8”) hole are two 10mm holes designated B & C. Only ONE of
these holes needs to be drilled according to the following rules.

Drilling the B or C holes.

ANSI New Installation
If this is a new installation using a new mortise lock, drill
the hole closest to the door edge (marked B). The wire
from the outside rosette will pass through a hole in the
mortise lock case and exit through this hole on the inside
of the door.

ADVANCE by Onity Installation • 11

ANSI Retrofit installation
If this is a retrofit installation using an existing Onity
mortise lock case, drill the hole that is farthest away from
the door edge (marked C). The wire from the outside
rosette will pass through this hole and around the back of
the mortise lockset.

EURO/DIN installation
Drill both the B and C hole on the inside face of the door
only.

Card Reader Hole - Wood Door

The rectangular hole for the card reader requires tools more
specialized than a drill bit or hole saw.
Use a wood router fitted with a template bushing, and a
template with the proper size cutout in it. The Onity router
template is designed to be used with a ½” (12 mm) template
bushing and router bit.
Set the router bit to make a shallow cut and use several passes
to complete the cutout. It will be necessary to cut from both
sides of the door.

Card Reader Hole – Metal Door

Unlike a wood door, it is not possible to prepare the reader slot
with a router. It must be prepared with a hole saw and a band
file.
Per the template, mark all the hole locations with a center
punch. Mark the outline of the reader hole on the door. Drill the
4 corner holes on each side of the door. Drill the three
overlapping 1” (25 mm) holes from each side of the door.

Use the band file to remove the remaining metal by filing to the
outline you previously marked on the door.

Lock assembly on the door
Insert the mortise lock in the door and secure it with the screws
provided.
On the back of the rosette there is a plastic wire routing bracket.
For a RH ANSI or EURO installation this bracket is not used.
For a LH ANSI installation, route the wire through the bracket
according to the illustration.

The back plate of the outside rosette is marked with the words;
TOP
ANSI/EURO/DIN/BLA
With TOP facing up, route the wire through the hole in the
mortise lock (new installation) or around the back of the mortise
lock (retrofit ANSI installation) and insert the square shaft and
mounting posts into the lock case. On the inside of the door,
move the wire to the side and then secure the inside plate to the
outside rosette with two 5mm screws.

14 • Installation ADVANCE by Onity

Route the wire according to the diagram to properly secure the
excess wire and protect it from damage.
DO NOT INSERT EXCESS WIRE BACK INTO THE DOOR.

Insert the reader into the reader hole and route the cable
through the hole provided. Fasten the reader with two 4mm
screws.
DO NOT USE A POWER SCREWDRIVER – damage to the
reader housing may occur.
Fasten the reader cable to the connector on the board.
Loosen all 4 screws and adjust the inside plate so that it is
vertical and straight on the door. Tighten the 4 screws, and
install the 2 addition screws at the top and bottom of the plate.
Drill a pilot hole suited to the size of the screw and the door
construction.
Install the bottom cover and battery cover using 12 mm T-10
screws. Install the inside handle using the 8mm T-10 screw.
For ANSI – install the t-turn using a 12mm T-10 screw
For EURO/DIN insert the t-turn cylinder into the hole provided
and secure with the screw in the lock face plate.
Finally, install the outside handle using a 12mm T-10 screw.
