Improved Tapered Land Thrust Bearing 40-20-38 Field Engineering Bulletin
Background:
Tapered land thrust bearings were introduced into Sundyne gearboxes three years
ago after decades of experience applying this technology to other gearboxes
manufactured by Sundyne Corporation. Three subtle improvements have resulted in
a dramatic increase in load capacity for these bearings. Other advantages of the
bearing design such as dimensional interchangeability, bi-directional operation,
proprietary leaded-bronze material and low cost have been retained.
Improvements:
All three bearing upgrades are related to distributing oil flow more uniformly between
the rotating shaft and stationary thrust bearing. Restriction at the bearing inside
diameter has been reduced to encourage higher oil flow rates across the bearing
surface. The profile of the bearing at the outside diameter has been modified to
minimize side leakage. Bearing flatness in the load zone is more tightly controlled.
Laboratory testing shows an 85% increase in load carrying capacity for the new
thrust bearing design with a more concise repeatability of the overload limit.
Application guidelines for the thrust bearing selection have not been revised. The
new thrust bearing provides a minimum safety factor of 2.0.
The new thrust bearing part numbers have changed to insure only the highest
quality components are installed. Part numbers for the redesigned thrust bearings
are tabulated below.

Change from WA05AW03 to WA05AA13C also requires change from BE09AW10XXXX to BE09AW09XXXX000.
2
Change from WA05AW04 to WA05AA13C also requires change from BE09AW13XXXXXX0 to BE09AW09XXXXXX0.
Implementation:
The new thrust bearings, WA05AA13X, become the standard offering as of May
2009.
