CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES

The student’s Industrial work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established by ITF

(Industrial Training Fund) in 1973 to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills

preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institution and it

runs for six months. It was introduced by the federal Government of Nigeria years back to

provide a foundation for students as well as adequate practical skills and experience for

students. SIWES has in the recent past been of immense benefit to those who partake in it and

I am really happy to be among them. The SIWES program is an eye opener because it creates

a platform where students have the opportunity to appreciate the theoretical knowledge they

gathered while in school. It is one of tools used by the federal government to improve the

technological advancement of the nation through robust man power.

According to the National Universities Commission (NUC).It is the accepted skills

training program which forms parts of the approved minimum academic standard in the

various degree programmes for all Nigerian universities.

The main objective of the program is to bridge theory with practices by making it

possible for students to get themselves acquainted with real jobs and actual job situations and

environments and to enlist and strengthen employer’s Involvement in the industry.

Participation in Industrial Training is a well-known educational strategy. Classroom studies

are integrated with learning through hands on work experiences in a field related to the

students’ academic major and career goals. Successful internship foster an experiential

learning process that does not only promotes career preparation but provides opportunities for

learners to develop skills necessary to become leaders in their chosen professions participation

1
in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of diploma and degree

certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country, in

accordance with the education policy of government.

 Operators- the ITF, the coordinating agencies (NUC, NCCE, NBTE) employers of

labor and the institutions.

 Funding – The federal government of Nigeria.

 Beneficiaries-Undergraduate of the following: Agriculture, Engineering, Technology,

Environment, Business and Applied science.

 Duration- Four months for polytechnics and colleges of Education and six month for

the universities.

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

To give students the ability to try and apply the given knowledge base on underlying

principles of their future work.

While the Objectives of SIWES are:

 To provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial

skills and experience in the area of their study.

 To prepare students for the work situation they are to meet after graduation.

 To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and

machineries that may not be in educational institutions.

 To make transition from school to the world of work easier and enhance students

contacts for later job placements.

 To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in the entire educational process and

prepare students for employment in industry and commerce.

2
1.3 IMPORTANCE OF SIWES

 It helps to improve the quality of skilled manpower of the students.

 The scheme provides a forum for industries to evaluate prospective employers and gives

feedback to institutions.

 The scheme gives students practical knowledge of course of study.

 SIWES programme exposes students to real life situation, thus supplementing the

theoretical lesson.

 The Four Cardinal Point Or Functions Of Mass Communications

The four cardinal point or functions of mass communications related to use of language are:

surveillance, correlation, cultural transmission and entertainment. In many ways, the four

functions of mass communication are still relevant and transferable to contemporary media.

Surveillance of the Environment Mass communication exists to observe and inform. Mass

media keeps citizens informed of news and events. In times of crisis, mass media

announcements offer warnings and instructions. For example, when natural disasters occur,

such as hurricanes, blizzards and tsunamis, traditional and social media outlets are the key

communication tools to relay information about the path of an impending storm or to inform

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 RELEVANCE OF TRAINING

The relevance of this training cannot be over emphasized, it aided the sharpening of inherent

skills and the acquiring of new ones. Also it helped to place high level of relevance on what I

have been taught in school. The relevance of this training to me can be divided into two

broad groups; the relevance to my academics and the relevance to the labour market.

Now in the relevance to academics, across the theoretical knowledge I acquired in school, I

encountered the practical aspect of the knowledge and applied them when necessary. There

are about 12 courses that this training placed relevance on and I have grouped them into six

classes of study.

1. A PRESS RELEASE

I was introduce in to a press release  which serves as an official statement delivered to

members of the news media for the purpose of providing information, creating an official

statement, or making an announcement directed for public release. Press releases are also

considered a primary source, meaning they are original informants for information. A

press release is traditionally composed of nine structural elements, including

a headline, dateline, introduction, body, and other components. Press releases are

typically delivered to news media electronically, ready to use, and often subject to "do

not use before" time, known as an news embargo.

A special example of a press release is a communiqué whch is a brief report or statement

released by a public agency. A communiqué is typically issued after a high-level meeting

of international leaders. Using press release material can benefit media corporations

because they help decrease costs and improve the amount of material a media firm can

output in a certain amount of time. Due to the material being pre-packaged, press
10
releases save journalists time, not only in writing a story, but also the time and money it

would have taken to capture the news firsthand.

Although using a press release can thus save a news outlet time and money, it constrains

the format and style of its content. In addition, press releases are favorable towards the

organization that commissioned them, framing the topic according to its preferred

criteria. In the digital age, consumers want to get their information instantly, bringing

about pressure on the news media to output as much material as possible. This may cause

news media companies to heavily rely on press releases to create stories.

 Elements Press Release

Any information deliberately sent to a reporter or media source is considered a press

release. This information is released by the act of being sent to the media. Public

relations professionals often follow a standard professional format for press releases.

Additional communication methods that journalists employ include pitch letters and

media advisories. Generally, a press release body consists of four to five paragraphs

with a word limit ranging from 400 to 500. Press release length can range from 300 to

800 words.

Common structural elements include:

 Letterhead or Logo

 Media Contact Information – name, phone number, email address, mailing address,

or other contact information for the public relation (PR) or other media relations

contact person.

 Headline – used to grab the attention of journalists and briefly summarize the news in

one to six words.

 Dek – a sub-headline that describes the headline in more detail.

11
 Dateline – contains the release date and usually the originating city of the press release.

If the date listed is after the date that the information was actually sent to the media, then

the sender is requesting a news embargo.

 Introduction – first paragraph in a press release, that generally gives basic answers to the

questions of who, what, when, where and why.

 Body – further explanation, statistics, background, or other details relevant to the news.

 Boilerplate – generally a short "about" section, providing independent background on the

issuing company, organization, or individual.

 Close – in North America, traditionally the symbol "-30-" appears after the boilerplate or

body and before the media contact information, indicating to media that the release has

ended. A more modern equivalent has been the "###" symbol. In other countries, other

means of indicating the end of the release may be used, such as the text "ends".

As the Internet has assumed growing prominence in the 24-hour news cycle, press release

writing styles have evolved. Editors of online newsletters, for instance, often lack the staff to

convert traditional press release prose into the print-ready copy.

2. Distribution models Press Release

1. In the traditional distribution model, the business, political campaign, or other entity

releasing information to the media hires a publicity agency to write and distribute written

information to the newswires. The newswire then scatters the information as it is received

or as investigated by a journalist. Thus, resulting the information or announcement

becoming public knowledge.

2. An alternative model is the self-published press release. In this approach, press releases

are either sent directly to local newspapers or to free and paid distribution services.[7] The

distribution service then provides the content, as-is, to their media outlets for publication

which is usually communicated via online. This approach is often used by political
12
institutions, for example. Another instance would be, Constitutional Courts in Europe,

U.S. Supreme Court,[9][10] and the U.S. State Supreme Courts[11] issue press releases
[8]

about their own decisions and the news media use these self-published releases for their

reporting.

3. Element of Journalistic Style:

- We were taught about style i.e organizational style & house style. There was a house

style in information unity for writing of press release which was introduce to me by the

supervisor. There was a laid down format for writing of press release and doing a lot of

other thing and I appreciated and respected that because of the knowledge I had.

- We were also taught the inverted pyramid style of writing which involved the 5w’s and

1h. I put this into major consideration when writing my intro, knowing full well what an

intro is and how to write it.

- Writing for the Mass Media, News Writing and Reporting and Writing of press

release

- One of the things you told me that guides the writing pattern of a reporter is the editorial

policy. This I learnt on the job. I learnt how to turn, twist, or slant stories in favor of the

editorial policy.

- You also equipped us with a lot of writing skills, styles & techniques e.g KISS (keep it

short and simple), proximity, prominence, Use of Registers, etc. These helped my

writing skill. For the times I went on assignment, I wrote the intros and narration for the

report.

- It was also made known to us the variances in scripts and the writing attitudes to apply in

each. During my training I mostly encountered the reportorial script. I also extracted

headline international stories from foreign medium for scroll messages.

13
- We were fore warned of the challenges in news writing and they were encountered. I

must say the news room is truly a mad house, whenever I come back from an

assignment, you are to sit in that noisy office to write your report. Thinking above the

noise wasn’t easy.

4. DIRECTING:

- This course enlightened the trainee to the duties of the director and the producer, and

during the training he was exposed to the practical job of a director as he became a

director par excellence. Also working with producers over time made me understand

who they were really.

- The trainee saw the different production crew member and their functions as he even

played most them. Duties like the News writing, press relaese, Report Editor, the typist,

etc.

- The different kind of shots I learnt about helped me to know the right shots to use even

as a director and as press and News Editor.

5. FILE PROCESSING AND DESKTOP PUBLISHING.

- The major objective of this course is to learn basic skill on the use of Microsoft word

and the general system file management. Like the trainee said earlier, there is an

existing networking system in INFORMATION UNITY and each reporter (interns

included) is expected to have folders in all the system to enable them to move clips from

place to place, I was able to master this act.

14
- The trainee was also taught about shortcuts on the keyboard. And these are to speed up

- work speed. So when at work and we are at the rush hour and we need to move clips

from place to place the short cut come in handy.

6. INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS

- Intercultural communication is about interrelating with cultures, information unity

practices intercultural communication because they disamination of their information

based Information Unity is a satellite stations that shows on content to the all the

department and to the world.

- Based on my observation and the operations of Information Unity they represent and

support the reformist school of thought, Information Unity is trying to balance the

concept of cultural imperialism, media imperialism and a free and balanced flow of

news and information.

- Although not taught in class every news bulletin must have a taint of foreign

information. When writing your script you write with the mindset that you are writing

for an international audience, in that light you are conscious of things like time.

- Mass media dependency: Information Unity was depending on foreign media and other

Nigerian media.

Now moving on to the relevance of the training on the labour force.

- I have gotten skills and training that I should have paid money to acquire but I got them

there easily. And these skills have added value to my curriculum vitae
15
- I had an opportunity to learn from the best of the best. Working in the Information Unit

was a privilege as I was exposed to the best. I had an opportunity to be tutored by the

likes of Mr. Akano kazeem, Olaosebikan Agboola , Adwale Rasaq, etc

- I have learnt to survive in a hostile environment where there are a lot of contentions

between the staff and being careful not to be caught up in the cross hairs.

- I learnt some on field experience, like been stood up, been to wait for hours just to get

interviews, etc. Not to mention the attitudes of gathering contacts wherever we go.

16
CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 SUMARRY, CONCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 SUMARRY

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE TRIANING

The success of my training is undisputed, but it was not devoid of rough edges. I experienced

some challenges, among these are:

- The issue of expensive transportation: I have to pay an average of 500 naira every day

for transport without remuneration.

- My colleagues (other interns) in the office were not ready to be dedicated to the job as I

was, so this was a great burden upon me because every member of staff was now

depending on me to carry out assignments when there were other hands. This made me

work overtime sometimes & it was favorable coming back late to a family house.

- Information unity been a government owned media comes with its own lapses. The

bureaucratic system is rigid and before things are done its takes so much time. This

affected the conducive working environment for the members of staff in that whenever

machines are bad and need repairs it takes so much time before it gets attended to. This

system made work so tedious and cumbersome.

17
4.1 RECOMMENDATIONS

- I strongly recommend that students undertaking internship should understand the

importance of the training and not joke about it. They should use the opportunity to be

hard working and enterprising.

- I strongly recommend that the supervisors that come to invigilate the students should be

familiar with the student and be at least in the social management sciences. This is

because is a lecturer from the School of Busines Studies.

- Also the number of visits during the training period should be increased.

4.2 CONCLUSION

My working experience with the information unity has brushed me up and unveiled the inner

me turning me into a breaded reporter. I want to thank the management of information unity

for the opportunity to serve diligently. This has placed relevance on who I am.

To the few interns that worked hand in hand with me like Mr. Akano Kazeem, et al I want to

appreciate your humility. Then to the members of staff that contributed immensely to my

training I salute you. And may all the seeds I sowed in information unity not die.

In conclusion, there were many things that I have experience and learnt during this

period. The whole training period was very interesting, instructive and challenging. Through

this training, I was able to gain new insights and more comprehensive understanding about the

real industry working condition and practice. It has also provided me the opportunities to

develop and improve my soft and functional skills. All of this valuable experience and

knowledge that I have gained were not only acquired through the direct involvement in task

18
given but also through other aspect of the training such as work observation, interaction with

colleagues, superior, and other people related to the field. From what I have undergone, I am

very sure that the industrial training program has achieved its entire primary objectives. It’s

also the best way to prepare students to face the real working life.
