SCIENCE 5

QUARTER 3 MODULE 3 WEEK 3

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Light travels in waves which can be absorbed, reflected, scattered, and bent.
For example, if you look at a leaf, that leaf appears to be green because it reflects
the green wavelength back to our eyes and absorbs all the other colors.

Black absorbs all the light and reflects little to none, it converts more heat.
The darker shade of color, the more heat an object absorbs, while the lighter the
color, the less heat it absorbs. The light energy absorbed is then radiated out as
heat.

Absorption- happens when light gets through the object. Reflection-

happens when the light that hits an object is bounced back by the object.
Refraction- refers to the bending of light as it passes through different materials.
Dark colors absorb a lot more heat than lighter ones because they absorb more
light energy. Bright Colors. Colors like pink or yellow are often called "bright"
because of the high degree of light they reflect. Shiny Colors. While color
is the primary factor, other variables can affect how colors absorb heat.

Transmission-refers to the
passing of light through some
materials. Different materials
have different ways of
transmitting light.
Transparent materials- allow all
light to pass through them.
Translucent materials- allow
some light to pass through them.

Opaque materials-do not allow light to pass through them.

Sound is produced when an object vibrates it travels in all directions. Sound
has many properties. These are pitch, quality, and loudness. Pitch refers to the
highness and lowness of notes. Quality refers to the shape of the sound waves an
object produces. Loudness refers to the volume or sound pressure produced by the
vibrations of an object. Sound may be absorbed or reflected when they strike an
object. The reflected sound is called an echo. Soundproofing means reducing the
ability of sound to travel in an object or a certain place.

Let’s Analyze

Directions: Read the following questions below and write your answer on the
space provided.

A. How does reflection and refraction differ from one another?

B. What are transparent, translucent, and opaque materials?

C. How Musical Instruments Produce Sound

Musical Instruments are objects that produce different kinds of sounds to

make beautiful music. Can you play a musical instrument? Choose at least two (2)
instruments you like and research on how it can produce energy in the form of
sound. Draw your chosen instrument below, describe it briefly and explain how it
produce sound.

INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION HOW IT PRODUCE SOUND?

Let’s Try (Evaluation)

A. Directions: Read the sentence carefully and write the letter of the correct answer
on the space provided before each number.

_____1. Which term refers to the vibrations that travel through air?
A. electricity B. heat C. light D. sound

2
_____2. If a leaf is green, which of the following statements is true about why it
appears green?
A. It only lets green light pass through
B. It absorbs green light and reflects all the others.
C. It reflects green light and absorbs all the others
D. It lets all the other colors except green pass through.

_____3. Which of the following refers to the ability of an object to do work?

A. speed B. energy C. motion D. electricity

_____4. Which object absorbs most of the light that passes through it?
A. lens B. opaque C. translucent D. transparent

_____5. If you add red, yellow, and blue light together what color light do you get?
A. white B. black C. brown D. green
B. Directions: Check (/) the blank beside the number if the statement is correct and
(x) if it is not.

____1. A rainbow appears in the sky because of the reflection and refraction of
white light from the sun.

____2. Refraction refers to the bending of light as it passes through different

materials.

____3. All colors of light that are not reflected are absorb.

____4. A person wearing a light-colored shirt will feel even hotter.

____5. Black objects absorb more heat than white objects.

C. Directions: Read the situation below and write if it is transparent, translucent

and opaque.

____________1. Marilyn looks out of her bedroom window at the birds outside.
Is her bedroom window transparent, translucent, or opaque?

____________2. On a bright sunny day, Rey is standing on a bridge looking into a

creek. The water is so still and clear that he can easily see fish
swimming. Is the water in the creek transparent, translucent, or
opaque?

3
____________3. The window in Lea’s bathroom contains frosted glass. Is his
Window transparent, translucent, or opaque?

___________4. Jaz took a shower. Her glass shower door was covered in
steam. Was the glass door transparent, translucent, or opaque?

____________5. Maria is a baby who needs to sleep during the day. Her mom’s
closes the curtains on the bedroom window and the room is
very dark. Are the curtains transparent, translucent, or opaque?

Let’s Create

If you are to design your own room, how will you make it soundproof? How
will you prevent too much heat from being absorbed in it? How will you make it well
ventilated and lighted?
Draw your design and label its parts and materials you used.
Materials: Bond paper, pencil, coloring materials.
