Activity 14 - Angles and Directions
Following are the observed magnetic bearings of a compass traverse: AB, N38˚41'E;
BC, N85˚28'E; CD, S56˚48'E; DE, S80˚50'E; EF, N59˚40'E and FG, Due East. Compute
the true bearing of its line if the magnetic declination in the locality is 02˚51' East.
Solutions:
AB: True bearing = N(Magnetic Bearing + declination)E
= N(38˚41' + 2˚51')E
= N41˚32'E

BC: True bearing = N(Magnetic Bearing + declination)E

= N(85˚28' + 2˚51')E

CD: True bearing = S(Magnetic Bearing - declination)E

= S(56˚48' - 2˚51')E
= S53˚57'E
DE: True bearing = S(Magnetic Bearing - declination)E
= S(80˚50' - 2˚51')E
= S77˚59'E

EF: True bearing = N(Magnetic Bearing + declination)E

= N(59˚40' + 2˚51')E
= N62˚31'E

FG: True bearing = (Magnetic Bearing + declination)E

Activity 15 - Angles and Directions
An old survey of a line recorded a magnetic bearing of S69˚28'E when the magnetic
declination was 3˚51' West. A survey performed in 2018 shows that the declination in
the same locality changed to 03˚58' East. Based on new survey, find the true bearing of
the line and its magnetic bearing.

Solution:
True bearing of line recorded = S(Magnetic Bearing + declination)E
= S(69˚28' + 03˚58')E
= S73˚26'E
Magnetic bearing of line recorded in old survey = S(true bearing + declination)E
= S(73˚26' + 3˚51')E
= S77˚17’E

Activity 16 - Angles and Directions
The following magnetic azimuths of an open compass traverse are reckoned from north:
AB, 182˚08'; BC, 277˚41'; CD, 314˚21'; and DE, 00˚28'. What are the corresponding true
bearings if the magnetic declination is 04˚31'E within the locality?

Solutions:
AB: Bearing = 270˚00' – Azimuth
= 270˚00' - 182˚08'
= 87˚52'
True Bearing = Bearing – declination
= 87˚52' - 4˚31'
= 83˚21'

BC: Bearing = 360˚00' – Azimuth

= 360˚00' - 277˚41'
= 82˚19'
True Bearing = Bearing + declination
= 82˚19' + 4˚31'
= 86˚50'

CD: Bearing = 360˚00' – Azimuth

= 360˚00' - 314˚21'
= 45˚39'
True Bearing = Bearing + declination
= 45˚39' + 4˚31'
= 50˚10'
DE: Bearing = 90˚00' – Azimuth
= 90˚00' - 00˚28'
= 89˚32'
True Bearing = Bearing + declination
= 89˚32' + 4˚31'
= 94˚3'
