Chapter 3

This document describes the research methodology used in a study about the challenges faced by senior high school STEM students at Bauan Technical Integrated High School in conducting research. The study used a content analysis approach to analyze responses from 150 respondents across STEM, ABM, and HUMSS strands who were randomly selected. The main challenges identified were difficulties searching for relevant literature, lack of cooperation from research partners, and personal issues exacerbated by the pandemic such as lack of resources and unstable internet. The study was conducted at the students' homes using an online survey distributed via messenger due to the modular learning format.

Research Methodology

3.1 Research Design

Research is considered as one of the most important core subject on senior high

school. It is not only required in tertiary education but also on senior high school. In

study's data analysis, four categories of difficulties are identified, including paper-based

problems, research partners and personal issues and hindrances.

According to study, the most difficult aspects are searching for relevant literature,

cooperating and participation. But for today's problem it's different because of the new

normal due to pandemic. Bunch of new challenges and difficulties occur such as lack of

resources, unstable wifi network, mental health issues, etc. Research contributes not

only to the author but also to the society's and school's reputation. It also helps the

teachers and students to learn more about each other's side.

This study was conducted using content analysis approach which aims to analyse

the information given by the participants of the study. Content Analysis is a process of

interpreting messages from different forms of communication whether it is written,

verbal, or non-verbal . This approach as a research method is an organized and

objective means of describing and classifying events. With the approach of Content

Analysis, words can be, possibly, classified into fewer content-related categories. By
classifying words into categories, the content may be different in words but shares the

same meaning . Content Analysis is a research approach that provides replicable and

valid inferences from the content to their context. The aim of the Content Analysis

Approach is to make a solid and wide description of the observation. The result of this

approach is groups or categories that describe the observation.

Research Setting

This study was based on qualitative data from STEM students of BTHIS.

3.2 Research Environment

This research is being conducted at Bauan Technical High School in Bauan,

Batangas. This study started on March of this year and is being conducted until now.

The school was established during the incumbency of Mayor Bienvenido Castillo in

1995. Its construction was based on extensive research with full consideration of the

prevailing economic condition of the people and the current cost of private secondary

education.

The school is located on the western part of the town proper. It has a total land area

of 3.3 hectares. The campus is known for its achievements and offers technical,

vocational and livelihood education to all. Students learn in a child-friendly, gender-

sensitive, safe and motivating environment and taught skills that are helpful in their

everyday lives. The school is accessible by both public and private transportation.
Since the pandemic is still present we conduct our own research on our house but

most of us lives in municipality of Bauan. Its location is the most preferred location

because the transportation is hassle free and accessible due to large number of

jeepney drivers traveling in the area. But it also have flaws such us traffics on rush

hours. In view of the fact that the campus is near the market, during rush hours it's kind

of traffic because of the intersections in different barangays.

3.3 Respondents/Subject of the Study

The study will have respondents from the chosen Grade 11 Senior High School

students in Bauan Technical Integrated High School (BTIHS).This may include students

who take academic track which are STEM, ABM and HUMSS strand. All of these

respondents were selected through random sampling. This sampling method is

conducted where each student of each strand has an equal opportunity to became a

part of the sample. As all students of each strand have an equal chance of becoming a

research respondents, this is said to be the most efficient sampling procedure. In order

to conduct this sampling strategy, we researchers defined the population first, listed

down some of the students who take each academic track and then we selected who

will be the respondents. For this purpose, an online interview survey questionnaire will

be given to the respondents to answer. There will be 50 respondents for each strand

that will have a total of 150 respondents. The respondents will be given enough time to

complete the survey questionnaire. Since we are now taking a Modular Learning
Modality, we researchers get those respondents through sending them a message

request in messenger and respectfully ask them to answer our online interview survey

questionnaire.

The questionnaire composed of questions related to the challenges encounter of

Senior High School STEM students of BTIHS with regard to research. The respondents

have their choice whether they participate or not. We researchers chose the students

under academic track as respondents of this study because it was assumed that these

students related on the challenges experienced with regards to research. The results of

the survey will be recorded to have valid and realistic information. The data will be

analyzed and interpreted according to the answers given by the respondents.

3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

The Study conducted during the school year 2021-2022 at Bauan Technical

Integrated High School it was considered the following procedure.

During the month of April, planning on the context and procedure of the study

was done. Included in the planning were the preparation of source of data in surveying

respondent where included in the study. Formulation of question statement regarding

the study was also done on the month of April. During the late part of April and early

part of month of May, pre-surveying of related literature and related studies was

conducted in Bauan Technical Integrated High School. Internet resources were browsed
for addition. Literature and studies development of research methodology was also

done simultaneously in the month of May.

The researches secured approved letter to conduct the study from the office of

the principal of Bauan Technical Integrated High School during the second week of

April.

The researchers had allotted time, effort, and cooperation in developing their

questionnaire to serve its intended respondents. The survey was created using suitable

questions modified from related research and individual questions formed by the

researchers. After the Teacher approved the questionnaire, copies were distributed to

the respondents of the research .Participants were given time to respond and then the

researchers collected the survey questionnaires the next working day. The data

gathered from this research instrument were tallied and computed for interpretation

according to the frequency of items checked by the participants. Along with primary

data, the researchers also made use of secondary resources in the form of published

articles and literatures to support the survey results.
