Write about:
- infrastructure
- career prospects
- social life
Many people think that living in a city is better than living in the countryside. However, I
believe that both options have its own advantages.
On the one hand, for me, one of the most important advantages of living in a city is that
everything is close to you, and you can go walking or by public transport to every place. The
infrastructure in cities is bigger and normally there are more work opportunities because most
of the companies are established in the big cities. That is why I reckon that usually the career
prospects are better there.
On the other hand, the silence and peace that is breathed in the countryside is without doubt,
one of the best advantages of living there. Also, the air quality is better and there is less
pollution than in cities. Attending to social life, it is true that in cities there are more options
for planning different activities but sometimes, having a picnic or walking among the nature of
the countryside is a better plan.
FCE 5
In your social studies course, you have watched a documentary on the potential effects of
too much pollution on the air quality of city centres. Your professor has assigned you an
essay to write.
Keeping the air quality in city centres at healthy levels for their residents is a concern
for many places. How can we solve the problem of pollution in city centres?
Write about:
- Automobiles
- Factories
The importance of keeping a healthy API (Air Pollution Index) level in city centres is a problem
that we must solve. The API index must be between 0 and 50 to be healthy.
This problem can be solved applying rules studied carefully by professionals. On the one hand,
nowadays there are cities, such as Madrid, in which automobiles that do not have the
ECOfriendly certificate cannot circulate and stay in the city centre. This is a great step to stop
gas emissions and to encourage people to use public transport and I believe that all cities must
apply this rule.
On the other hand, nowadays big factories usually are in the surroundings of big cities in
industrial parks and not in the centre, but this does not mean that they do not contaminate.
The API index in those industrial parks almost always is more than 50, so that brings very
serious problems of pollution and bad air quality. The solution for that is to bet on the green
industry and renewable energy hiring professionals such as chemical and environmental
engineers.
Almost all big problems, such as bad air quality in city centres can be reduced and solved
applying rules and making people aware of them.
