B. Solve the following problems (5 points each).
How many grams of sodium sulfate will be formed, if you start with 1.50 L of a 4.0 M
solution of sodium hydroxide?
EQUATION: VNaOH ->MNaOH-> molNaOH ->M.R-> molNa2SO4 -> MMNa2SO4-> MASS Na2SO4
11- 15. How many grams of Ca(OH)2 are needed to neutralize 25.0 mL of 0.100 M HNO3? The
reaction proceeds as follows:
2HNO3 (aq) + Ca(OH)2 (s) → H2O (l) + Ca(NO3)2 (aq)
16- 20. At 40°C, the blood has an osmotic pressure of 8.02 atm. How many grams of glucose is
contained in a 5mL of intravenous injection to have the same osmotic pressure as the blood?
MM of glucose is 180 g/mol.

REQUIRED: MASS OF GLUCOSE
EQUATION: M = π
RT
SOLUTION: M = 8.02 atm = 0.31 mol/L
(0.0821 L x atm/mol x K) (313 K)
21- 25. What is the freezing point of a solution of 10 grams of glucose, C6H12O6, and 1500 g of
water?
= 0.04m
: TF = KFm = (1.86°C/m)(0.04m)
= 0.07°C
: FpSOLUTION=FpSOLVENT - TF = 0°C – 0.07°C
ANSWER: = - 0.07°C
26- 30. Determine the boiling point of a solution of 10 grams of a substance of molecular weight
94 g/mol in 500 grams water.

REQUIRED: FREEZING POINT OF SOLUTION
= 0.21m
: TB = KBm = (0.52°C/m)(0.21m)
= 0.11°C
: BpSOLUTION=BpSOLVENT + TB = 100°C + 0.11°C
ANSWER: = 100.11°C
31- 35. What weight of NaCl in 800g acetone is needed to bring boiling point to 60°C? (Boiling
point of pure acetone= 55.95°C ; Kb of acetone = 1.71 °C/m)
SOLUTION:
: TB = Kbm
60°C = 55.95°C + TB
60°C - 55.95°C = TB
4.05°C = TB
4.05 = 1.71 m
1.71 1.71
m= 2.37 m = n solute
0.8Kg
n solute = (0.8)(2.37) = 1.896 mol
m = 1.896 mol (58.44 g/mol) = 110.802 g
ANSWER: = 110.802 g
36 – 40. Fishes need oxygen to survive. Goldfish in a crowded aquarium has a better chance
of survival in cold water than in warm water.

Warm water makes gases less soluble, which ensures oxygen leaves the water and the fish dies. Cold
water allows more oxygen to enter the body for a longer period of time. In cold water, solubility of
oxygen gas decreases.
41 – 45. Adding sugar to a glass of juice that already has crystals of sugar at the bottom
makes the juice sweeter.
Since the substance is already filled with sugar, adding more would have
no effect on the liquid. Adding more sugar will definitely make it sweeter.
