there any pattern?
Yes, teacher!
Okay, what is the pattern?
Add 4 to the first term to get the second
term.

Excellent!
As you can see, every figures has
patterns and sequence of numbers.
It is made by adding two or more
shapes/numbers to get the next
pattern/sequence of numbers.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Today we will discuss about
“Finding the nth Term of a
Sequence”.
But before we begin, I want you to
know our Five classroom rules.
a. Setting of Standard
1. Listen when your teacher is
talking.
2. Follow the direction
carefully
3. Raise your right hand if you
want to say something.
4. Respect yourself and other
people.
5. Participate in the activities.
Can I expect that from all of you
class?
Yes, teacher!
b. Reading of the Objectives
1. The learners demonstrate
understanding of sequence in
forming rules, expressions and
equations.
2. The learners are able to apply
knowledge of sequence,
expressions, and equations in
mathematical problems and real-
life situations.
3. Formulates the rule in finding the
nth term using different
strategies (looking for a pattern,
guessing and checking, working
backwards).

2. Activity
This time class we will have an
activity. I will divide the class into
two groups. Each group will be
given a fact sheet all you need to
do is to solve the problem that are
given to you.
Am I clear class?

Group 1 Yes teacher!

Jerelyn saves ₱ 200 for the month of July,

₱ 400 for August, and ₱ 600 for
September. If Jerelyn will continue to save
this manner, how much will she save for
the month of December?
The table below will help you look for a
pattern.
Month Amount of
savings

July ₱ 200

August ₱ 400

September ₱ 600

October

November

December

Group 2

Jessa saves ₱ 300 for the month of

January, ₱ 600 for February, ₱ 900 for
March. If Jessa will continue to save in
this manner, how much will she save for
the month of June?
The table below will help you look for a
pattern.

Month Amount of
savings

January ₱ 300

February ₱ 600

March ₱ 900

April

May

June

Sense you are done with your

activity. Let us now answer the
questions.

3. Analysis
What is the problem given in the
group 1?
How much will Jerelyn save for the
month of December?
Yes, you are correct!
What is your answer class?
Our answer is 1200 for the month of
December.
Very good! How did you know that
its 1200?
By looking the difference which is 200
and we add 200 to the first month to get
the value of the second month.
Excellent!
How about in the month of
November?
1000 is our answer.
Great job!
What about in the month of
October?
800 is our answer.
Yes, you are correct!
What do you think is the pattern
class?
You just add 200 pesos to the month of
July to get the value of the second
month which is August and so on.
Very good!
How about in the group 2 what is
the problem?
How much will Jessa save for the month
of June?
Okay, what is your answer?
1,800 is our answer.
Yes, you are correct!
How about in the month of May?
1200 is our answer.
Very good!
What about in the month of April?
1500 is our answer.
It’s correct!
What do you think is the pattern
class?
You just add 300 pesos to the month of
January to get the value of the second
month which is February and so on.

Excellent!

4. Abstraction
Example 1

Given the following sequence.

8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32
1. The number of terms in the
sequence
2. The first term
3. The fifth term

Solution

1. There are 7 terms in the

sequence
2. The first term is 8
3. The fifth term

In the sequence t1, t2, t3, t4, t5,… third term

is t3, and the fifth term t5. Also, tn is called
the nth term and the number of terms is n.

Example 2
In the sequence 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21
Determine the following:

1. n
2. t1
3. t4
4. t7

Solution
1. n=7 because there are 7 terms in
the sequence
2. t1=3 because the 1st term is 3
3. t4=12 because the 4th term is 12
4. t7= 21 because the 7th term is 21
Finding the nth term of a sequence
If we are given the a certain number
Terms in sequence, we can derive a
formula to get the succeeding or nth
term of a sequence.

Example 3
In the sequence 200, 400, 600, 800,
1,000, 1200.
a. Derive the formula to determine the
nth term of a sequence.
b. Use this formula to find the 20th
term.

Solution
a. Notice that the second term is
found by adding 200 to the first
term. The third term is found by
adding 200 to the 2nd term. Thus,
the succeeding term is found by
adding 200 to the preceding term.
You can look for a pattern, work
backwards and check.

Thus, we can find the nth term of the

sequence by using the formula
tn =200n
where tn = nth term
n= number of terms

Let us see if this formula really

works.
If we want to find the first term, we
have n = 1. So, t1 =200 (1) =200.
If we want to find the third term, we
have n=3.So, t3= 200 (3)=600.
If we want to find the 6th term, we
have n= 6. So t6 = 200 (6) = 1,200.
b. We use this formula to find the 20th
term of the sequence. Here n= 20.
So, we have t20 = 200 (20) = 4,000.
Thus, the 20th term is 4,000.

Example 4
a. Derive the formula to find the nth
term of the sequence 8,
12,16,20,24,28,32.
b. Use this formula to find the 30th
term.
Solution
a. Observe that the succeeding term
is found by adding 4 to the
proceeding term.
Thus, we have the following.
t1 = 8
t2=8+4 (1)
t3 =8+4 (2)
t4 = 8+4 (3)
t5 = 8+4(4)
t6 =8+4 (5)
So, tn =8+4 (n-1)
= 8+4n -4
=4+4n
tn,=4n+4
The formula in finding the nth term of
the sequence is tn = 4n+4.

Let us see if the formula really works.

To find the 1st term, n=1.So t1 = 4(1)
+4=8.
To find the 4th term, n = 4. So t4 = 4(4)
+4=20.
To find the 7th term, n=7 t7= 4(7) +
4=32.
Let us use the formula to find the 30th
term of the sequence. Here n= 30.
Thus, t30 = 4(30) + 4= 124
The 30th term of the sequence is 124.
Keep in Mind
In the sequence t1, t2, t3, …tn, t1 is
the first term, t2 is the first term, and
tn is the nth term. The number of
terms in this sequence is n.
To find the nth term of a sequence,
we derive a formula that is obtained
by
a. Looking for a pattern
b. Working backwards
c. Guessing
d. Checking
Did you understand our discussion
class?
Yes, teacher!
Do you have any questions?
None teacher!
5. Application
This time class we will have another
activity, with the same group. All you
need to do is to complete the table
below. Use any strategy in finding
the nth term. I will give you the fact
sheet of your activity and you will
write your answer in a cartolina. I will
give you 8 minutes to do the task.
