Unit 4 – Mass, Weight and Density

4.2 – Relationship between Mass and Weight

This section covers the following syllabus (Physics 5059) requirements.

 The weight W of an object of mass m is given by:

W = mg

where

W = weight (in N)
m = mass (in kg)
g = gravitational field strength (in N/kg)

mass, 3 kg

gravitational
force, weight
= 30 N
gravitational
field strength,
g = 10 N/kg

Earth

Difference between Mass and Weight

Mass Weight
It is the amount of matter in an object. It is the gravitational force acting on an object.
SI unit is kilogram (kg). SI unit is Newton (N).
It is a scalar (does not have a direction). It is a vector (has a direction).
It is constant everywhere. It varies from place to place.
It is measured with a beam balance or
It is measured with a spring balance.
electronic balance.
