Task 2

1. The document contains engineering calculations and diagrams related to structural analysis. It provides 6 multi-part problems involving stresses, forces, materials properties, and deflections. 2. The problems calculate quantities like stresses, forces, temperatures and dimensions using given loads, materials properties, diameters, thicknesses and other structural parameters. 3. Diagrams show structural configurations like supports, bolts, plates and connections that are referred to in the calculation of stresses, forces and deflections.

Solve for the following:

1. The upper deck of a footballs stadium is supported by braces, each of which transfers a load P = 700 kN to the base of a
column (see figure part a). A cap plate at the bottom of the brace distributes the load P to four flange plates (tf = 25 mm)
through a pin (dp = 50 mm) to two gusset plates (tg = 38 mm) (see figure parts b and c).

Determine the following quantities:

(a) The average shear stress in the pin.
(b) The average bearing stress between the flange plates and the pin, and also
(c) The average bearing stress between the gusset plates and the pin.

2. A special- purpose eye bolt with a shank diameter d = 12 mm passes through a hole in a steel plate of thickness tP = 19 mm
(see figure) and is secured by a nut with thickness t = 6mm. The hexagonal nut bears directly against the steel plate. The
radius of the circumscribed circle for the hexagon is r = 10 mm, so each side of the hexagon has a length 10 mm. The tensile
forces in three cables attached to the eye bolt are T1 = 3560 N, T2 = 2448 N, T3 = 5524 N.

(a) Find the resultant force acting on the eye bolt.

(b) Determine the average bearing stress between the hexagonal nut on the eye bolt and the plate.
(c) Determine the average shear stress the nut and also in the steel plate.

3. A tie- down on the deck of a sailboat consists of a bent bar bolted at both ends, as shown in the figure. The diameter d B of
the bar is 6mm, the diameter dW of the washers is 22 mm; and the thickness t of the fiberglass is 10mm. If the allowable shear
stress in the fiberglass is 2.1 MPa, and the allowable bearing pressure between the washer and the fiberglass is 3.8 MPa, what
is the allowable load Pallow on the tie- down?

4. A steel rod of 15- mm diameter is held snugly (but without any initial stresses) between rigid walls by the arrangement
shown in the figure part (a). (For the steel rod, use α = 12 x 10-6/˚C and E = 200 GPa.)
(a) Calculate the temperature drop ΔT (degrees Celsius) at which the average shear stress in the 12 – mm
diameter bolt becomes 45 MPa. Also, what is the normal stress in the rod?
(b) What are the average bearing stresses in the bolt and clevis at A and between the washer (dW = 20mm)
and wall (t = 18 mm) at B?
(c) If the connection to the wall at B is changed to an end plate with two bolts (see figure part b), what is
the required diameter db of each bolt if the temperature drop is ΔT = 38˚C and the allowable bolt stress
is 90 MPa?

5. Before the 400 – kN load is applied, the rigid platform rests on two steel bars, each of cross- sectional area 1400 mm 2,
as shown in the figure. The cross- sectional area of the aluminum bar is 2800 mm2. Compute the stress in the aluminum
bar after the 400- kN load is applied. Use E = 200 GPa for steel and E = 70 GPa for aluminum. Neglect the weight of

(2) is bronze. A concentrated load P = 80 kN is applied to the rigid bar at B. Compute the normal stress in each bar and
the downward deflection of the rigid bar at A.
