Labs 2 Basic Logic Gates Solutions

We constructed digital circuits using AND, OR, and NOT gates and measured the output voltages to fill out truth tables. For the AND gate, we got a 5V output only when both switches were connected to the power. For the OR gate, we got a 5V output when either or both switches were connected to the power. For the NOT gate, we got a 5V output when the switch was connected to ground and 0V when connected to power. By comparing the output voltages, we demonstrated how the truth tables of each logic gate differ based on their rules.

Lab No 2 Solution

Abstract:
In this lab experiment, we can build digital circuits using AND, OR, and NOT gates to analyze
how a logic circuit works with different logic gates. And then we are going to investigate the
circuits in order to fill out the truth tables and verify according to the voltages measured.
Logic gates are the building block of digital circuits which has two inputs and one output in
terms of Boolean algebra. There are three basic logic gates, for example: AND, OR, and NOT.
All three basic logic gates have different rules for their truth table. To build digital circuits we
use Dc powers, logic gates, switches, and a ground. We use different methods to connect
the switch to the ground and power and get results in terms of voltages. Then with the help
of voltage, we fill the truth table of three basic logic gates.

Introduction:
Logic gates are the building block of digital circuits which has two inputs and one output in
terms of Boolean algebra. There are three basic logic gates, for example: AND, OR, and NOT.
All three basic logic gates have different rules for their truth table. The truth table consists
of three columns- two inputs and one output. The output depends on the input for each of
the logic gates’ rules.

Experiment Procedure:
Part A: AND Gate Familiarization:
we construct another circuit using 5V DC Power, 7408 (AND gate), 2 SPDT Switches, and a
ground. Firstly, we connect the 1st switch to the ground and the 2nd switch to the power
and get 0V output voltage. Secondly, we connect both switches to the ground and get an
output voltage of 0V. Thirdly, we connect the 1st switch to the power and the 2nd switch to
the ground and get 0V output voltage. Finally, we connect both of the switches to the
power and get an output voltage of 5V.
A B Y Output Voltage Measured
0 0 0 0V
0 1 0 0V
1 0 0 0V
1 1 1 5V

Part B: OR Gate Familiarization:

we construct another circuit using 5V DC Power, a 7432 (OR gate), 2 SPDT Switches, and a
ground. Firstly, we connect both of the switches to the ground and get an output voltage of
0V. Secondly, we connect the 1st switch to the ground and the 2nd switch to the power and
get a 5V output voltage. Thirdly, we connect both switches to the power and get a 5V output
voltage. Finally, we connect the 1st switch to the power and the 2nd switch to the ground
and get an output voltage of 5V. If we get a 5V measure, we put “1” in the table and if we
get a 0V measure we put “0” in the table.
A B Y Output Voltage Measured
0 0 0 0V
0 1 1 5V
1 0 1 5V
1 1 1 5V

Part C: Not Gate Familiarization:

we construct a circuit using 5V DC Power, a 7404 (Inverter) NOT gate, SPDT Switch, and a
ground. Then we measure the output voltage using a voltage probe and fill out the truth
table. When we connected the switch to the ground, we got an output voltage of 5V. Then
we connected the switch to the power and got an output voltage of 0V. If we get 5V
voltage, we put true “1” and if we get 0V we put false “0”.
A Y Output Voltage Measured
0 1 5V
1 0 0V

Discussions:
In part A, we used an AND Gate and measured the output voltage in 4 different ways similar
to the OR Gate. Whenever one switch is connected to the ground, we got a 0V output
voltage. But when both switches were connected to the power, we got an output voltage of
5V. In part B, we used an OR Gate and found the output voltage 4 times. When one switch
was connected to the power, we got a 5V output voltage. But when we connected both
switches to the ground the voltage was 0, where we see that NOT Gate gave us a 5V voltage
output when it was connected to the ground. In part c, we used a NOT Gate and found the
output voltage in two ways. When we connected the switch to the ground, we got an
output voltage of 5V. Then we connected the switch to the power and got an output voltage
of 0V. Therefore,

Result:
we can say in the Result that each of the three logic gates had different output voltage
outcomes depending on if the switch was connected to the power or the ground. We can
compare how the three logic gates were different in terms of their truth tables and output
voltages.

Conclusions:
In conclusion, we learned about how different Logic gates have different rules for the truth
table. And we built circuits using multisim to prove if the output was false or true and based
on the voltage output, we found. We can compare how the three logic gates were different
in terms of their truth tables and output voltages.
