Experiment No 2 Flame Test

This document outlines a laboratory experiment on performing flame tests on ionic compounds. The experiment aims to 1) identify elements through flame color, 2) infer the presence of energy levels in atoms, and 3) demonstrate safety practices. Students will place small amounts of ionic salt samples in beakers, dip cotton buds in the samples and distilled water, and swab the samples in a Bunsen burner flame to observe the emitted colors. Data on the ionic salts and their flame colors will be recorded. Students will then make observations, draw conclusions, and answer guide questions about flame colors and their relation to chemical identity.

VII. Guide Questions

1. Why do chemicals give off flames with different colors?

2. Suppose that you are working in a laboratory that designs fireworks that display blue, red, and
yellow colors. What chemicals you recommend?

3. Did your predictions match the expected color as stated in the diagram?
