Paano Magsimula ng Bangus Cage Business: Part 1

Biology and Taxology

-Milkfish is one of the important fish species commonly farmed in the Philippines

-It is capable of surviving in water with high salinity and has a wide temperature tolerance

-It can be reared in monoculture system or polyculture system together with some fin fishes and
crustaceans

-It is usually raised from 300-500 grams in salt water mapa fish pond, fish pen, at fish cages

- Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, and filamentous algae ay mga pagkain ng milkfish

-Mas makabubuti kung papakainin ito ng high protein feeds such as Tateh Surfer Feeds, Extru Float
Feeds o Extrusink Feeds.

What are the things needed and how to make a bamboo cage?

- It is important to place it in the areas allowed by the LGU such as Mari Culture site
- It is also important that the water is clean with a depth of 10 meters to 35 meters and safe from
strong waves and water current. Far from pollution with proper water exchange to replenish
oxygen and eliminate waste metabolized
- Sa paggawa ng cage ihanda ang mga sumusunod:
1. Prepare the bamboo poles, nylon thread and net cage
2. Use the proper net mesh size such as number 17, 14, 12, and 10 and always check the nets,
change it if necessary
3. Third, place a floatation device such as drums, self pvc pipes or Styrofoam
4. Make a bamboo cage with a recommended dimension of 10x10 and a depth of 5 meters. It
is also important that moorings are strong enough to withstand strong currents.

What species of milkfish that can be culture?

- We only have one species, the chanos chanos/milkfish/bangus

- Milkfish fingerlings are also available in wild or at private milkfish hatcheries such as Fin Fish
Hatchery, Star Bangus Hatchery and BFAR NIFTDC
- Milkfish fry from wild is found in coastal areas in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Sual Pangasinan,
Zambales, Cebu, Tacloban, Bohol, Iloilo and Saranggani
Part 2

- Milkfish is one of the leading aquaculture commodities in the Philippines

- It is also favorite of Filipinos because of its delicious and fatty belly

- Raising milkfish is also a good business

PROPER MANAGEMENT OF GROW OUT PREPARATION

- In cage management it is important to consider the following water parameters:

- First in dissolve oxygen 5 to 20 PPM, pH 6.5 to 8.5, temperature 25 to 32 degrees Celsius
and salinity less than 45 ppt. We need to check the cage and make sure it has no holes or
parts that are torn.
- It is necessary to inspect the cage regularly to check if there is no loss connection or gap
where fingerlings can escape
- It is important to clean the cage once a week to remove rotting organisms from the nets
that obstruct the flow of water
- If there are dead fish remove it, the area where the net is placed must be safe from
domestic, agricultural and industrial run offs
- There should also proper water exchange from waves and tidal floss

- For proper feeding management for 5 to 6 months, we need to use 600 bags of Tateh Extrusink
or Extrufloat sa pag aalaga ng 15,000 milkfish or with 40 bags per thousand ratios para ma-meet ang 400
grams and marketable size

- Do sampling every 15 days

- Do it in the morning to check growth and adjust feeding if necessary

- Use proper feed depending on the current size of the milkfish stock

- Pwedeng magpakain ng slow sinking or Tateh Extrusink by bowl, scoop or hand feeding

- After 5 to 6 months of culture period, the milkfish reach 500 grams average body weight, it can
be harvested

- Stop or reduce feeding one day before harvest to avoid any post-harvest problems such as
chilling or putting it in cold storage

- Sa pag aani, iwasang mabawasan at magkaroon ng gasgas ang mga kalikis ng bangus para
mapanatili ang magandang kaledad.

How much capital and income can be earned from raising milkfish in bamboo cage?

- In culturing of milkfish in Bamboo cages, 540,000 pesos ang kailangang kapital

- 80k para sa bamboo cage
- 461k para sa permit, nets, milkfish fingerlings, feeds, caretakers (OPERATIONAL COST).
- After 5 to 6 months we can harvest 6.8 tons of milkfish which can be sold for 115 pesos per kilo
based on survival rate of 95 to 98 percent.
