GenMath - LESSON 3

This document provides examples of operations that can be performed on functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition. It gives sample problems demonstrating how to combine different functions using these operations by finding and simplifying expressions like (f + g)(x), (f - g)(x), and (f o g)(x). The document aims to teach students how to perform basic arithmetic and composition on functions.

ADDITION A. Given the functions 𝑓 and 𝑔 below, find and
(𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) + 𝑔(𝑥 ) simplify the following functions.
SUBTRACTION
(𝑓 + 𝑔 ) (𝑓 − 𝑔 ) (𝑓 ∙ 𝑔 ) (𝑓/𝑔)
(𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) − 𝑔(𝑥 )
MULTIPLICATION 1. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 + 2
(𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) ∙ 𝑔(𝑥 ) 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 4
DIVISION
(𝑓/𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓 (𝑥 )/𝑔(𝑥 ) 2. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = √𝑥 − 1
COMPOSITE FUNCTION 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 4
𝑥−2
3. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) =
