CLOSURE (WEEK 9)
Journal Writing:
As a student, what do you think is the greatest challenge in making SMART goals? How is a SMART goal part of
creating a solution to the questions “what will you do” and “who will you be”?
As a student, I believe that the most difficult aspects of setting SMART goals are self-commitment
and fear. Sometimes I feel like I cannot do it due of the circumstances. Now that I am in college, I have a
ton of schoolwork that I need to prioritize. Thinking of making these kinds of goals will be a waste of time.
But it is at this point that my level of self-commitment must rise, and how deeply I want something will drive
me to attain my objectives. Moreover, I have a lot of doubts about what I am capable of doing because of
fear. When I want to do anything, I often think to myself that I am not good enough. I have the perspective
that "I'm still young, I have enough time, I can do it later." This is a mindset I need to overcome because it
has caused me to delay a lot. I do not want to look back and find it was too late.
Further, SMART goals are made by utilizing a certain set of criteria that ensures our aims are
attainable within a specific time frame. This is where SMART goals come into play in determining "what will
you do" and "who will you be." When we set objectives for ourselves, we must set realistic goals that we
believe we can reach. In addition, when we make a goal, we must be "specific" about what we want. If our
aim is vague, we will not know whether or not we will be able to attain it. For example, I would like to
graduate from college with a higher grade or on the dean's list. My ambition is to become a doctor since it
has the potential to save lives. Then, there is "measurable." This is what helps plot the goal. For instance,
what will I do to achieve that specific goal? By diligently studying. It aids in plotting our progress toward that
aim. Next, is “achievable”. The objective must be something we can comprehend, something we can
achieve. For example, I chose this course because I am confident that I will be able to finish it. Next,
SMART goals are quite beneficial since they ensure that our objective will be relevant. What is the
relevance of the course I chose? Being a medical technologist allows for the early and correct diagnosis of
health problems, allowing for timely action and improved outcomes. Lastly, "time-bound." This is to ensure
that we can end the goal process, that it is limited in time, because if there is no endpoint, the goal can
never be truly realized because we have no idea if we have arrived.
To sum up, as a student, there is always a time in my life when I want to do something but do not
know how. So, breaking down my goal into doable bits removes the uncertainty of what to do next. This, in
turn, lessens worries and reduces my fear. By pursuing this SMART goal, I will have the opportunity to get
to know myself better, despite the fact that I am well aware that this will not be an easy process. It requires
time, effort, and perseverance. Hence, doing so encourages me even more because I can envision who I
will be in the future, not just as a Medical Technologist, but as a doctor as well.
