Task one- Statement of the problem

What are the effects of truancy on the academic performance of 11th grade students at Irwin high
school?

2
Task 2- Reason for selecting the topic

This is a high school which is located in the district of Irwin, Montego Bay. The size of the

student population is approximately two thousand seven hundred.

The purpose of this research is to explore how deliberate absence from school affects the

academic performance of students in grade eleven.

From our point of view, truancy at this school is an act performed by mainly grade eleven

students. According to Krucik (2019), Some of the causes of truancy are lack of ambition,

bullying, peer pressure, mental health issues and boredom.

Task 3- Method of investigation

The researchers chose to use a questionnaire to collect information for this research.

According to Accountlearning.com questionnaires have a number of advantages, these include:

 “It helps in focusing the respondent’s attention on all the significant items.”

 “It is easy to plan, construct and administer.”

 “It permits group administration and is adaptable to any objectives. It can cover a large

group at the same time.”

Task 7-Analysis and Interpretation of Data

The researchers main focus is on the effects of truancy on the grade 11 students at Irwin high

school. We chose to do this research to know more about truancy and how it affects the 11

graders. This survey was carried out in the form of a questionnaire. From the survey done, the

respondents chosen were students between the ages 15-18. In total we got 20 responses, which

include 15 girls and 5 boys.

In figure.1 the pie chart shows about the main causes of truancy. Majority of the students chose

that financial problems is one of the main causes of truancy with 44%. The least chosen answer

was bullying with 6%.

Figure.2 the graph displayed how truancy would affect the academic future of grade 11

students. The answer that was selected the most was students would not get signed for subject

with a value of 39.

The table figure.3 which shows the best way to prevent truancy and the number of respondents

and the percentage of the responses. 12 students with a percentage off 66 chose that the best way

to prevent truancy is to get in touch with parents in case there are problems at home.

12
Task 8-Statement of Findings

The findings are:

1.The main effect that truancy could have on grade 11 students’ academic performance, the

respondents chose that they could not get signed for subjects with 40%.

2.The main reason for performing the act of truancy is financial problems which was the most

selected response with 44%.

3.In order to prevent truancy 66% of the respondents stated that the school could get in touch

with parent/Guardian to see if students have problems at home.

13
Task 9- Recommendations and Implementation strategy

The recommended solution to prevent truancy is to get in touch with guardians to see what is

taking place in the environment. One of the main reasons for performing the act of truancy is

financial problems. The solution I recommend is that students should be counseled. This solution

is likely to work because counseling helps to improve your self-esteem and it can help with anger

as well as fear and many more. In solving the financial issues, the school could get in touch with

the ministry of education and request financial help in the form of a letter for the student/students

who are frequently absent from school due to financial problems.
