CBR Test Report

This lab report summarizes the results of a California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test conducted to determine the strength of a soil sample to be used as pavement foundation. The report describes the objectives, theory, apparatus, procedures, data collected and results of the CBR test. Based on the penetration resistance measured at different penetrations up to 7mm, a graph was plotted and the CBR value of the soil was determined to evaluate its adequacy to support road design loads. The report concludes with a discussion of the results.

Tittle :
California Bearing Ratio (CBR)

OBJECTIVE :
To determine the CBR value for a a soil consideration as a pavement
foundation. This value is a percentage comparison with the standard
crushed rock from California

THEORY :
It is important to realize that the CBR test is one step in the road
pavements foundation design process, the test how the road
engineer to design the capping layer(if needed) and the sub-base
layer by determining the strength of the underlying soil.Engineer can
determine if this strength is adequate to handle the desired road
design or if additional procedure need to be done to increase this
strength.

Apparatus :

Loading Machine

Soil Sample

CBR Mould With Collar

5
Surcharge Weight Scales

Tray

Steel Ramming Rod

Measuring Cylinder

6
PROCUDURE :

Soil was crushed by using a hammer, after that, the soil was
sieved by using 20mm sieve.

The soil sample was weight

The soil was mix and divided by 5

Weight the mold and put and rub the mold with grease

7

Place the first portion of soil into the mould and compact it
with the 65 number of blow by using 4.5 rammer and 50mm
diameter.

The process was repeated until 5 layer are done.Remove the
collar, trim the soil flush with the top of the mould with a
scraper and weight the mould with soil.

8
Procedure using the CBR machine:

Place the mould with base plate containing the sample with the
top face of the sample exposed, centrally on the lower platen of
the testing machine.

Place the appropriate annular surcharge discs on top of the
sample.

Fit into place the cylindrical plunger and force-measuring device
assembly with the face of the plunger resting on the surface of
the sample.Make sure that the proving ring dial gauge is
properly adjusted, that there is no daylight between the bottom
of the stem and the proving ring anvil.

Apply a seating force to the plunger.

Record the reading of the force measuring device as the initial
zero reading or reset the force measuring to read zero.

Secure the penetration dial gauge in position.Record its initial
zero reading or reset it to read zero.Make sure that all
connections between plunger,crosshead,proving ring and
penetration dial gauge assembly are tight.

Start the test so that the plunger penetrates the sample at the
uniform rate of 1=0.2mm/min,and at the same instant start the
timer.

9

Record reading of the force gauge at intervals of penetration of
0.25mm to a total penetration not exceeding 7.0mm
