Tropical cyclone, also called typhoon or hurricane, an intense circular storm that
originates over warm tropical oceans and is characterized by low atmospheric pressure, high
winds and heavy rain. It is necessary for us to know more about this kind of hazard as we are
located in a tropical region. Typhoon brings torrential rains, violent winds floods and storm
surges. It kills so many lives, and destroys so many houses. Houses made from light materials
were hit the hardest. Also livelihoods have been lost, particularly of those who depend on
farming or fishing to make a living. It is very sad to think that we can’t stop typhoon from
happening, all that we need to do is to prepare ourselves for the effects that may happen to us.
“Big trials come to those who can handle it.” This quote is best to all the people who
suffered from a typhoon. We all know that disasters like these have a disproportional impact on
our communities’ most vulnerable persons, such as children, persons with disabilities (PWD) and
elderly. A big salute to them to still continue to look on the bright side of life despite of all the
challenges and obstacles they have experience in life especially this kind of hazard, the typhoon.
The possible effect that may happen when there is a typhoon is that it is frequently
followed by secondary disasters, such as floods and landslides, which can severely damage or
even destroy homes and infrastructure, as well as a threat to human life, particularly in coastal
areas. Just like when Typhoon Rai also known as “Odette” struck the Philippines a week before
Christmas, affecting about 2 million people in 400 municipalities and cities and creating serious
damage to property, farming sector and the public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, seaports
and airports.
The need to study on what to do to mitigate or lessen the effect of typhoon as we hit our
place is very substantial so that history would stop repeating itself. Through this, doubts, worries,
suffering and pain felt by all the people during and after the typhoon will be soon put to an end.
So in order to minimize the damages of a typhoon, each individual should have a proper
preparation. When there are warning signals of a typhoon approaching, people must be prepared
and remain calm. In order to keep up with the latest news on the typhoon, people must prepare
basic essentials such as food, water, clothes, medicine kits and a transistor radio. Stay indoor to
secure your safety; if your home is not sturdy enough to handle floods and severe winds,
evacuate to a designated evacuation center right away. According to Natural Hurricane Center
(2013), “the two keys to weather safety are to prepare for the risks and act on these
preparations.” Lastly, follow the instructions accordingly as issued by local officials.
