I. Context & Rationale

Context & Rationale

The COVID-19 pandemic has an unprecedent impact on education around the world. In

order to understand and face this challenge, educators and researchers undertake a range of

research to at least lessen the effect of pandemic to the educational system in the Philippines.

Pandemic has made learning that was initially face-to-face learning into distance learning. Nowadays,

our educational system is trying its best to provide continuing education to the learners in this time of

pandemic. A lot of problems arise during the different mode or delivery of learning to be cascaded to

students such as the capability and availability of parents or other people to serve as teacher of their

children, poor internet connectivity, and lack of gadgets to avail online classes and above all no

permanent source of income or poverty which is faced by the majority of the population of our

learners in David Moises Memorial High School. Educators find ways to avoid this situation and

believe that learners’ connection and their performance should be supervised to maintain quality

education especially on subjects like social science and economics that requires face to face set up

of learnings.

It was noted by the researcher upon checking the output of students from their returned module

during the first and second weeks, that there were poor in understanding and retention skills even

though repeated activity sheets were given to them. The students also show lack of comprehension

skills and necessary knowledge with regards to the subject. Here intervention is definitely needed.

Adapting new innovative ways is a necessity since face to face is still limited at this time.

Educationalists believed that using different styles is very appropriate in distance learning for the

learners to manage their activity and it seems that creative way to solve problems and exploring

students’ creative minds are other solutions to guide and engage the student's interests in learning.

As educators we can help our students to the best of our capability to make them learn the

knowledge and skills they need through various intervention or strategies that would be appropriate

for their lesson especially during this “new normal”.

The researcher proposes using the dual coding strategy as an intervention to enhance the

understanding of monetary policy in social science/economics subject. In this kind of intervention

students will gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and

respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem or challenge. Dual coding learning

strategy also contributes to students with medium ability compared to students with skills above or below

average.

The Dual coding strategy is combining words and visuals such as pictures, diagrams, graphic

organizers, and so on. The idea is to provide two different representations of the information, both visual

and verbal, to help students understand the information better. Adding visuals to a verbal description can

make the presented ideas more concrete, and provides two ways of understanding the presented ideas. It

is about more than just adding pictures. Instead, the visuals should be meaningful, and students should

have enough time to integrate the two representations. By this strategy students work at home over an

extended period of time- from a week up to each quarter that engages them in solving real-world

problems and understanding a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skill by creating

a public product or presentation for a real audience which best suit in understanding monetary policy in

social science/economics subject. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as

critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills.

Therefore, dual coding strategy unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and

teachers.

With this, the researcher strongly believed that dual coding strategy as intervention will improve

the level of understanding of Grade 10 students of David Moises Memorial High School in monetary

policy in social science/economics topic.

II. Action Research Questions

This action research study aimed to enhance Grade 10 students’ understanding of monetary policy in

social science/economics subject for the school year 2021-2022. Precisely, it sought to answer the

following questions:

1. What is the level of understanding of monetary policy in social science/economics subject of

Grade 10 students based on the result of their pre-test?

• What is the level of understanding of monetary policy in social science/economics subject of

Grade 10 students based on the result of their post-test?

• III. Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

To solve the problems that arise in an educational system particularly schools that adopted with

different modality and with students who need more attention and guidance, teachers must consider this

as a challenge and think of a possible solution. With the modes of Learning Delivery, it is hard to fully

measure the actual skills and assess the performance of the students. Hence, the researcher finds ways

and means on how to deliver the lesson without sacrificing the quality of the results. It is through this

conviction that the use of Dual Coding strategy as a teaching intervention can fully capture the extent of

learning of the student as this method involves students to investigate, and respond to questions,

problems or to an authentic challenge for a given period of time and will engage them in solving and

understand real-world problem or answering a complex question to develop deep content knowledge,

critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication skills which are the primarily skills needed for

holistic literacy of learners.

A pre-test is administered to the targeted learners through their parents and instructed to let their

child answer the test as well as the next activities to be given every week. The pre-test is gathered after

one week and data will be analyzed. After analyzing the data, the researcher studied the content of the

modules and to achieve the desired results, the researcher created a learning material focusing on hand

tools and drawing instruments based on the modules containing the integration of the dual coding

strategy. In the material, an educational article and a diagrams or graphic organizer will be added

followed by guide questions with different difficulties that will lead learners to understand the topic easily

and efficiently.

By these, the researcher is able assess students understanding. At the end of the quarter, with

given interventions students’ will be assess using post-test that will serve as the basis for their final result.

thus, the researcher can identify the effectiveness of the intervention.

IV. Action Research Method

This action research employed a pretest-intervention-posttest design and made use of a

descriptive method to determine the effectiveness of Dual Coding Strategy to improve student

understanding about monetary policy.

a. Participants/Sources of Data and Information

The participants of this research study are the Grade 10 students of David Moises Memorial High

School for the school year 2021 – 2022. The number of participants will be determined by using their

scores in the pre-test for the second quarter and will be selected using purposive sampling.

b. Data Gathering Methods

The researcher utilized the descriptive method with researcher-made pre-test and post-test

questionnaires and module-based Learners Activity Sheet (LAS) with the integration of dual coding

strategy. Data gathered will be tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted using appropriate statistical tools.

Pre-test. This is used as the basis of the study. Hand in to their respective adviser and

will be given to the respondents through their parents.

Module based Learners Activity Sheet (LAS) with the integration of dual coding

strategy. This will be sent through Adviser to the student’s brought by parents upon retrieval and

release of modules. Attached to the SLM integrated, activity sheets with dual coding strategy guide

and lastly, rubrics for respondents will be aware on how their output will be assess for critical

questions.

Post-test. This is the last activity performed by the identified participants and become the

basis of the result of this study.

The data gathered are analyzed and interpreted using frequency count, mean and mean

percentage. To describe the level of retention based on pre-test and post-test, the mean scale below

will be used.

Permission to conduct the research will be sought from the Principal of David Moises Memorial

High School and authorized signatories at the Division of Capiz. The researcher will also ask for

approval from the parents of Grade 10 students, a face-to-face meeting with the parents by following

the AITF protocols, and sign the agreement of between the researcher and participants including

confidentiality of name, sex, and status. Collected data from other researches will be rightfully

acknowledged in the bibliography.

V. RESULT AND DISCUSSIONS

a. Findings

Data which were utilized in this study were encoded and analyzed using statistical package for

social sciences (SPSS)

table 1 shows the level of understanding of Grade 10 Students – A during pre-test. The level of

understanding of Grade 10 students on monetary policy based on the result of their pre-test is “LOW” with

the mean Value of 9.09 and standard deviation of 1.58.

The result implies that the Grade 10 students is experiencing difficulties in understanding the

topic about drawing tools. Furthermore, the students are low in analyzing the topic and more so, the

students are struggling in comprehension that will lead to learning gaps which only indicated that students

have less interaction with various activity and show evidence that they lack of study habits. This means

this group of students need an intervention to get better results.

table 2 shows the level of understanding of Grade 10 students after post-test. level of understanding

of the grade 10 students on monetary policy based on the result of their posttest is “HIGH” with the mean

This implies that the scores of the students increased after mastering the topic about tectonic
plate

using the intervention which is Dual Coding approach. Student have gained the required skills needed to

understand and comprehend the topic which leads them to high and much better result. This means the

intervention and strategy used by the researcher is highly effective.

B. Recommendations

Based on the findings, the following recommendation is presented:

1. Teacher are encouraged to prepare differentiated instruction that will match to the level of

students understanding.

2. Parents are encouraged to supervise the study habit of their children. They should monitor and

guide their children to improve their understanding and performance.

3. Teachers are encouraged to create more supplementary materials for students to enhance higher

order thinking skills.

4. Future researchers may opt to use the intervention used in this study as a basis for their future
research endeavor.

Data Analysis Plan

The researcher use the quantitative descriptive methods of research using the following statistical

tools:

Frequency count and Percentage. used to determine the result of the pre-test, and post-test of

the respondents in terms of scores.

Mean. used to determine the level of understanding on monetary policy based on the result of

their pretest and post-test after intervention.

The research will begin in the first week, and will end at the last week of the second grading

period of school year 2021 – 2022 as shown below:

VI. Plans for Dissemination and Utilization

The researcher will disseminate the result of the research to the students and parents,

collaborate with the teachers in school to generate added and essential information for the

improvement of the said research through LAC sessions, and to the school's division office.
