4.tutorial 4 Transient

The document contains 10 questions regarding transient analysis of circuits after a switch opens or closes. Various circuits are shown in figures 1 through 10. For each question, the document provides the circuit diagram, asks to determine a current, voltage, or rate of change after the switch opens or closes at t=0, and gives the answer. Questions involve determining currents or voltages for t>0 after a switch opens or closes in RL, RC, RLC, and other circuits.

Transient Analysis
Q1. The switch is closed for a long time. At t=0, the switch is opened. Find i(t) at t>0. [Ans:
i(t)= 4e-16t A]

Fig. 1
Q2. For the circuit shown in figure, find the current through the inductor for t>0. [Ans: i(t)=
(2/3)e-t A]

Fig. 2
Q3. For the circuit shown in figure, find the voltage across the switch at time t=0+, i.e. find
Vs(0+). [Ans: Vs(0+)=50V]

Fig. 3
Q4. For the circuit shown in figure, find the rate of rise of current i.e. di/dt (t=0+) [Ans: di/dt
(0+)= 75kA/s]

Fig. 4
Q5. For the circuit shown in fig. 5, the switch is initially open for a long time. At t=0, the
switch is closed. Find the currents i1, i2 and i3. [Ans: i1=10A, i2=10/3 A, i3=0 A]

Q6. A 50 Hz, 400 V (peak value) sinusoidal voltage is applied at t = 0 to a series RL circuit
having resistance 5 ohm resistance and 0.2 H inductance. Obtain an expression of current at
any instant ‘t’. Calculate the value of the transient current 0.01 sec after switching on. [Ans: i
= 6.33e-25t + 6.35sin(314t – 1.49), 4.93 A]
Q7. Refer Fig. 7. Obtain the current at t>0, if AC voltage v is applied when the switch K is
moved to from 1 at t=0. Assume a steady state current of 1 A in the RL circuit when the switch
was at position 1. [Ans: i = 1.4e-1000t + 1.345sin(314t-0.304)]

Fig. 7
Q8. A series RC circuit has R=20 ohm and C=100 uF. A voltage v = 200sin(314t) is applied at
t=2.14 ms. Obtain an expression for i. Also, find the value of current after time 1 ms from the
switching instant. [Ans: i = 0.93e-500t + 5.32sin(314t + 1.682) A, 5.414 A]
Q9. Refer Fig. 9. The parallel RLC circuit where R=0.1 ohm, L=0.5 H and C is 1 F. Capacitor
C has an initial voltage of 10 V (polarity being shown in Fig. 9). The switch K is closed at time
t=0. Obtain v(t). [Ans: v(t) = - 4.896e4.3t + 14.896e-5.3t V]

Fig. 9
Q10. Refer Fig. 10. With switch open, steady state is reached with v = 100sin(314t) V. The
switch is closed at t=0. The circuit is allowed to come to steady state again. Determine the
steady state current and complete solution of transient current. [Ans. iss = 0.0176cos(314t) (at
t>0), i = 17.6cos(314t) - 0.6cos(1.37x103t) + 13.7sin(1.37x103t) mA.]
