CHINESE 122

BASIC PROFICIENCY IN MANDARIN CHINESE

BULLETIN INFORMATION
CHIN 122: Basic Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (4 credit hours)
Course Description:
Practice and further development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.
Admission only by successful completion of Chinese 121. Offered in spring
Prerequisites: CHIN 121

SAMPLE COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is the second of two elementary Chinese language courses. We will continue to
practice and further develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills necessary to basic
competence in Mandarin Chinese. We will also continue to introduce Chinese culture through
our language study by learning to discuss aspects of life in China such as holidays like the spring
festival, and unique aspects of daily life in China such as Chinese food and the transportation
system. Upon completion of the course students will show substantial improvement in the four
skills and be able to carry on basic conversations about daily life.

ITEMIZED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of Chinese 122, students will be able to:
1. Recall and reproduce the vocabulary introduced in each lesson, both in speaking and
writing.

3. Develop their familiarity with Chinese culture through exposure to the language.
4. Demonstrate understanding of unique aspects of life in China, such as the Chinese
zodiac and Chinese holidays.
5. Demonstrate understanding of and actively use an increasing variety of grammar forms
and sentence patterns.

SAMPLE ASSIGNMENTS AND/OR EXAMS
We will spend approximately five classroom hours on instruction of each lesson, and have
lesson tests after two lessons have been completed. We will also have a final exam, as well as
daily quizzes. Doing well in a language class requires consistent effort. If you budget your time
outside of class to make sure you practice regularly, you will succeed. Students are expected to
spend between one and two hours a day to be well prepared for all class meetings, which
means: learning the new vocabulary and characters at the beginning of each lesson, being able
to ask questions about the new lesson, and getting ready for quizzes and tests. This will allow
you to make the best use of class time in developing your language skills. If you save all the
work until right before the lesson tests you will not only do poorly on your daily class
participation and quizzes, you will also quickly forget everything you crammed for, leading to a
crisis at final exam time. Because of the nature of the subject, cramming at the last minute will
almost surely lead to unsatisfactory performance in Chinese – in other words, don’t fall behind!
1. Quizzes: We will have a character quiz at the beginning of every class. There will be no
make-up character quizzes under any circumstances. The four lowest quiz scores
(including zero) will be dropped.
2. Lesson tests: A lesson test will be given after every two lessons. Lesson tests are
examinations of vocabulary, grammar, and the cultural content introduced through
language use. For example, by composing short essays on the exams students show
their retention of vocabulary and grammar, as well as the creative description of
situations that occur through life in a Chinese speaking environment. Make-up tests are
not permitted except in cases of unexpected illness or emergency. Students must
present written proof to re-schedule and must take the test within three days of the
original test date.
3. Assignments: Homework assignments are due in class on the due date.
4. Exams: There will be three lesson tests, written and oral, and a final exam.
